Great trip and awesome temps for winter. We had -8F while ice fishing yesterday. I'll gladly take your 60's. I can't wait to get out backpacking again. Still a couple months before the snow is gone. You were making some great time on this trip. Seems that is the case when you hike solo. Well done on your video showing the beauty of the area and trail. Dinner sounded great. Nice relaxing trip. Well done. Have a great day.

Thanks Steve! It was great to get out in some warmth. Getting those winter time blues lately. I’m really looking forward to warm weather. I was just thinking about speed and being solo. With less talking, etc. I think I don’t necessarily hike faster, just less distractions if that makes sense. Less to slow down for.

Where is the entry point on that part of the AT? Looks like a hike I would enjoy in the up coming season.

@@Rayzor66I started at Pine Grove Furnace State Park. But on this 10 mile hike there were at least 3 trail heads that I past. The full stretch I do when I can shuffle cars or get a shuttle is from Pine Grove Furnace State Park to Caledonia State Park which is 20 miles total but no back tracking. It is great for a multi day trip as well. It was actually my first multi day trip years and years ago. Probably why I like it so much. But there is plenty of water and camping along that 20 mile stretch: the FarOut app has all the parking and other details.

My first taste of the AT was hiking in to the Birch Run shelter back in ‘97. Lots of good memories and great camping.

It was one of my earlier camping experiences on the AT as well. Really is a great shelter area. Plenty of room. And clean.

I hate it when I forget my coffee. You’re getting some good hammock time. No hip belt…. Very interesting. I’ve seen a lot of light AF backpacks. Everyone loves them. Those solo trips are always so special. There’s something so peaceful about it. Really enjoyed the video my friend 👍🏻👍🏻

Thanks Jason! That is the first time I believe I forgot anything for a trip and it was the most important. There may have been a tear or two when I realized the missing coffee. I have 5 LiteAF packs. Some with hip belts most without. The largest is for winter when I need to bring a lot of gear and it has a hip belt. This one is my smallest one. Last year was the first time I used a hip belt, other than winter, for years so this year I think I’m ditching the hip belt again. LiteAF packs are very comfortable. Love them. Solo trips are zen. 👍

Back 40 years ago my dad and were doe hunting around Tom's run shelter. He thought he saw an albino deer that turned out to be white goat. He was so dumb founded that no shot was fired and the goat laughed at him.......We had a fun laugh at the shelter over lunch......

That’s a great story! I think I would be dumb founded as well if I saw a goat on the trail.

Nice Dan! Thinking of ordering that same tarp. I use my tarp with doors year round and I really never use the doors. Think I’ll skip the line locs though, seem like a pain.
@backpackingadventures4813
@backpackingadventures4813 11 ай бұрын
Thanks! Same here, I don’t deploy the doors all that much. When I do it’s mainly because I have them and not necessarily because I need them. This will be a good change. The line locks are actually pretty good. I was using line that was smaller diameter than what was needed. 2mm works best and now there is no issues. Just pull tight and done.

It is a really nice section of the trail in PA. Rocky in a few spots but the hills aren’t bad at all.

We hammocked right next to the water. Fire in the pit between the logs. Listened to a fox most of the night.

That is a great section to cruise on. With feeling as good as you did maybe your body is switching to thru hike mode. It's crazy how all over the place our weather has been one day warm than next wake up to a few inches of snow. It was nice you could take advantage of the weather swings to get you other setup out.

I really enjoy this section. It’s been a couple years that I hiked it. The weather is weird as of late. Now we have had snow storms in the span of a few days. All of this after Punxsutawney Phil said we’d have an early spring. He lied. lol. It was great having the warm weather though. I was itching for it.

Nice one Dan! You were def booking it! I try to go caffeine free as much as I can but if you need that kick in the morning you might also consider throwing some extra electrolytes with caffeine in your drink kit. Might never need ‘em unless you run into this scenario. Enjoyed this one!

Thanks Dave! I usually only have one cup but I was totally fine without it. I always have electrolytes with me. I have capsules I take on the AM and throughout the day. Then have a flavored electrolyte drink with dinner. At home I take the electrolyte capsule on the morning before working out.

When I use line locs. I just use a simple slip knot to secure it. Takes second to tie an to undo. I have a question for you Dan. When hiking. To lighten the load. I will be using the I phone. What external mic are you using?
@backpackingadventures4813
@backpackingadventures4813 11 ай бұрын
@backpackingwithahammock I used a slip knot when I realized it slipped. The issue was it was barely holding. When I adjusted the other side it slipped almost to the ground. I reached out to HG to find out what diameter line to use since I used what I had at home. So I ordered 2mm. But I still will put in a slip knot to sure it up after everything is in place. The mic I used to use was the rode micro which is the best in my opinion. abut you need a cold shoe for it and it becomes a pain to use. For the longest time last year I just used the mic on the phone (make sure to turn off stereo sound or it sounds bad). But last year on my Standing Stone Trail thru hike and it rained every day and was humid and hot. After the second day the sound became muffled because I believe water/moisture in the on board mic. But I didn’t realize it until long after and editing the videos. So I bought the Shure MV88 Portable iOS Microphone amzn.to/3uEWBiz. It is very price at $200. It plugs right into the phone. It doesn’t come with a dead cat and if you use a case you have to buy an extension. It sounds great but you have to put it on and off when you are talking. But you may not even hear the difference. In this video in the first couple talking shots I forgot to use the mic. Then after I did so listen to it and see if you notice a difference. I think going forward (since I spent so much on it) I will use the external mic at camp or when it’s windy on trail. But other than that I’m going to use the on board mic. Because I switch back to using my phone for weight and was if use and if I have to attach stuff to it all the time then it becomes cumbersome, at least to me. Also, I see them on Amazon with the lightning adapter but if you have a new iPhone 15 with USBC I don’t think they have a version for that. I could be wrong though. With allllllll that said if you want a recommendation, I wouldn’t recommend the one I have and I would say to use the on board mic for shots while walking. As far as at camp the rode video micro is the best and much much cheaper and a higher quality sound. However, I’m not sure if the USBC connector will be an issue. I hope this helps.

What do you use to hang your hammock? I have trouble finding the exact distance I need. So I need a longer line
@backpackingadventures4813
@backpackingadventures4813 11 ай бұрын
I mostly use 12’ straps with beetle buckles. I have 15’ straps I use very rarely. Mainly when I take my niece because I have only 1 pair of the 12’ but 12’ seems to work where ever I hang. So far. I don’t worry about distance too much but more so tree diameter which can take up much of the strap length even if the trees are close.
