Totally agree. Journey before Steve perry was just another trippy weird band with no direction. I bought the Journey 5 cd set and I hate to say it but their older songs were horrible.(I'm not a spaceman) for example. Steve changed them for the better because they had no growth without him. They were content being a stoner band thinking they were making such deep songs. Just my opinion

Pointless.
@jgreen38712 жыл бұрын
If true, then Journey would have faded when Perry went on a decade haitus late 80s. Then when he regrouped, he further delayed their comeback in the 90's. True, Perry got the band on top, but he was solely responsible for its decline. As history proves it, Cain and Schon are the backbone of the band. Perry's contribution to the songs were largely on the lyrics and voice, which can easily done by someone else. Cain and Schon were the creators of the music, that's exclusively God-given talent. If Perry is such a star, he could have made it big as a solo artist, right? In fact his 2-3 solo attempts didn't have the staying power. Perry made a lot in the 80s, and got a lucrative deal so Schon and Cain can have exclusive right to use the trademark thru Elmo Prod. Funny thing is, Perry, as court records show, endorsed the attempted 2018 coup by Valory and Smith, maybe forgetting that he signed a prior deal in 1998 surrendering his rights to the duo. The old Journey had a very toxic past and now we know who they are. Sorry guys, it appears that your man Steve was a double-dealer.

I totly agree. I bought a 5 cd box set of Journey that had basically every song they recorded throughout their career. Some of the pre-perry songs were so bad. Kind of like hippy trippy " deep" stuff. Look up a Journey song called spaceman. This was before Steve perry. Ugggghhh

Neil was shredding with Carlos Santanna at 16. In the early 70s, prog was king and Journey could have joined that pantheon, but no. It's so much better to abandon musical sensibilities for the almighty pop machine. Journey became just another radio band when they could have been much more. Perry wanted to be the indispensable man and in his fight for control, damned them to state fair hell.

Raised On Radio tour (Kansas City) was my first and only Journey concert. Actually my first rock concert, period. Blew my 17-year-old mind (and my girlfriend's). We had both been obsessed with this amazing vocalist and band (hearing them on the radio, and listening to their back catalog on cassette & vinyl) since before we even met each other. So to actually get to go see them, at full concert force - while _still in their lethal prime_ - it was just unbelievable!🔥 Btw, just for the record, it was never an actual "farewell tour". As it turned out, of course, it was indeed the last tour with Perry, sadly. But no one knew that at the time, so it was never billed as a farewell tour. Just wanted to clear that up, for new fans who might not know the history... It's still the greatest concert experience of my life - and I've seen plenty! Cheers.

No matter how good the new vocalists can be for me is a like a tribute because is no new relevant material, that trascend. The best material are the old/classic songs with other voice. The new albums from 2000´s have been not huges success like in Steve Perry era. These said the numbers, the charts, the music magazines, the reviews. It's one thing to sing very well, hit the notes, etc. and another is to have that connection capable of transcending time and the musical field. Not all singers will achieve it easily.

Journey to me was one of those bands who had some of the best, almost prodigy musicianship. Like Toto.. These bands wrote the 80's soundtrack EDIT: I also wanted to say Neal Schon is not only a guitar god but always comes across a cool easygoing personality

Saw Journey with Ronnie Montrose at Dayton Hara Arena. Never forget it. Refuse to see them without Steve Perry. Hope the rumors are true and there's a reunion. And 1 more album would make rock history. Oh just wanted to add the huge neon Phoenix on stage was spectacular.

Jonathan Cain super keyboardist ever creating some of the most memorable sounds for journeys music no one can top his style because without noticeble keyboard riffs it's just not journey music ever since journeys first album the keyboards were there.great music

After Greg Rollie left (huge loss) & Jonathan joined Journey, they went into a completely different direction musically than from where Journey started after Steve Perry joined. With Greg's amazing talent on keyboards, piano & harp that brought R&R with a blues feel was FANTASTICALLY unique. Jonathan wrote more pop style & ballets (co-wrote), that moved them away from that original sound & feel. Don't get me wrong I think he's talented & love the music that came from them during that time but it changed nonetheless. Watch Journey soundstage 1978 (classic rock live channel) when you get to 36:37 watch to the end, you'll fully get my point. Journey is my favorite group of all time!!

@@geneevans7885 yes he did. All my point was is that when Gregg left & Jonathan replaced him the sound & feel of Journey changed. Not saying or meaning in a bad way! But in a very distinctive way. It's easy to hear & feel the differences, which is all my point is. No reason to defend Jonathan, there's nothing to defend the guy is talented. I guess you're not understanding what I mean. 4:50 long 30 minute woodstock jams were on the way OUT and you should thank everyone who told you to HIRE STEVE because you became megafamous thanks to him. w/o him.... prob not. But he would have climbed up to fame with our w/o a Schon because his voice was that good. Schon is a great player. But not a virtuoso and he needs a band setting. He can literally shred when he decides to but still, those Greg Rollie blues james were NOT going to propel you guys to any further fame. It wasn't the 60s anymore. But too bad Greg didn't want to be just the keyboardist/backup vocalist. He sang really well and played well but OH well.

This is a very good interview but Neal's seems to forget that STEVE had THE most influence with DSB!!! FULL STOP. STEVE came up with the chorus. STEVE said to Neal to sound like a train STEVE came up with a LOT of the lyrics to DSB and most of the others songs on all of the 9 albums they did together: which ALL went double platinum and higher. EVEN Jon Cain said STEVE was the band leader and you absolutely need that type of ALPHA person to give clear direction.

Spot On David! Neal has re-invented the past until you realize he dropped out of school and was still in his teens when Herbie Herbert was forming Journey- and sneaked Steve Perry on stage supposedly to 'just sing a song' then informed the band that SP was the new frontman! Google HH interviews- he was very much the creative force in many areas. Neal embellishes his participation except the part where he forced SP out. That's in court records too but you won't hear it in podcasts.

That musta been one helluva fight for SP and NS to not know that Neither had the band trademarked for Decades. .

It's a sad state of our times that we are still impressed with great songs done in 1 or 2 takes. That was their job of a seasoned pro and tape was bloody expensive, it was a different mindset. As a producer I can feel todays musicians/singers know that they can mess up their take 50 times because it's digital, again a different mindset. Big shout out Schon for his collab albums with Jan Hammer I was playing recently. Great guitarist.

I remember in 1981 I was backstage with the warmup band and met most of the Journey guys - Steve Perry in a white suit walking around all by himself a little spaced out, Ross and Steve Smith walking around together, Neal in a chair with two girls rubbing his back and sort of holding court in the hall outside the locker rooms - my drummer friend told he wasn’t sure about a trick he did with his sticks and Neal goes “Hey man entertain!”

Steve walking around by himself, I think that's why he never went back. He felt like after Schon said in many interviews that he hated Perry, that Steve was pretty much an outcast. Perry didn't feel part of the band. In concerts they all look like buds, but when it came down to it, Steve was just there to help them all become famous and wealthy. Perry made Journey what they are today. Too bad Schon didn't appreciate that.

That was the best era. 77-80 before Rolie left. Infinity. Departure. Evolution. Both Perry and Rolie harmonizing and so many epic and album friendly cuts. Albums back then were events. Most every song good. Not just a vehicle for a hit single or just toss offs. Filler if you will. Don't get me wrong. Perry can sing. His voice is an anthem. I just wasn't much of a fan after Rolie left. Too much sappy, syrupy type crud
