Thanks for doing this vid, painful watching for those of us who love Blackpool. The town's been in decline for decades and was exploited and used by large companies such as Trust House Forte and many others, for cheap labour and fast profits. None of those large companies which were here for decades, reinvested in the town's infrastructure and probably paid little or no taxes which benefitted the local communities. The tide went out on Blackpool a long time ago, and what's been left behind are the poor, the damaged and the unwanted. Don't blame the poor for Blackpool's poverty, ask what happened to all the money the town and its workers generated during the golden days.

I'm 17 and I grew up in Blackpool, moved away now, but it's weird reading these comments and seeing the worst street names listed and they're the ones I would walk to my dad's house through, some of them just being a street or two away from where I lived for 12 years. I love going to towns and exploring them and I always felt it was strange that I lived in Blackpool for so long but I couldn't find my way around, really, because obviously I wasn't allowed out to play. So it's cool to see you going down all the streets I'd get lost trying to find despite formerly being a local, it is sad about the shops. But I don't think Blackpool has had a golden age since pre-90s. It's always been tacky, but it was just so much more charming back in the day, I suppose. It feels so strange that I'm from there when really, there's nothing at all to say about it. It's just a sort of shell of a place. Though further down the town away from the beach, there are some nice streets, older houses. Most people have nostalgic memories of holidays in Blackpool but for me it's a sort of bittersweet fever dream of streets full of rubbish and my dad's bike always getting stolen, lol.

Great video I'm glad you filmed this 👍 My wife and I just returned from Blackpool yesterday, we had a great time but it breaks my heart when I see the back streets of Blackpool , Lytham road , Bond street, Central drive , Waterloo road , Coronation street are in such a state it's like something from a end of the world movie , I love Blackpool and went as a child and took my kids there , now my kids want to go abroad, Blackpool is expensive, our hotel was expensive for what we got and the breakfast was cheap produce , not value for money , I think Blackpool is getting worse every year , we visited Lytham the town next to St Anne's and it's beautiful compared to Blackpool , Lytham is full of rich people and it's another world compared to Blackpool yet it's right next to Blackpool . The council in Blackpool must be lining their pockets over the years they are not putting the money back into Blackpool it's such a shame , I can see Blackpool becoming a ghost town it will become like Morecombe, the Blackpool prom hotels are all empty and are becoming run down and dirty , I can't figure out what the council want to do with Blackpool , such a shame as I have great memories of Blackpool, but no wonder people go abroad for holidays it's cheaper and cleaner , I also noticed the backstreet's of Blackpool are dangerous at night , they are talking about redevelopment in Central drive with a new entertainment theme park attraction costing 300 million but why would any company invest 300 million in a town that is on its knees ? I'm glad you have shown the other side of Blackpool because there are KZbin channels that don't want to show that side , What do you think Blackpool will be like in 10 years ? I hope it gets better but I cant see that happening, look forward to your next video 👌👋

It has lost its way. It once used to boast THREE railway stations to cope with the demande of holidaymakers, now it has one and a bit. My first hotel holiday was Blackpool and that building has been demolished ( The Balmoral Hotel/Argosy ) Hotels knocked down everywhere now and others stand boarded up and empty. The rest looks SHABBY at best. Nothing but a cess pit, to be honest. I'd say Blackpool has a problem, then I look around every town and city in Britain and see the same. The disease is within us all and especially made worse by that brought from abroad. We have a nation of slobs, who gaze at their mobiles all day, which is why everything is falling to bits.

I love Blackpool even more because of how raw it is, I am fortunate to have travelled internationally but I've only been interested in Blackpool for the past year. I've been through poor parts of south east Asia and it was a similar level of disrepair along the back streets by Central pier except it was more familiar. As a photographer I find the contrast that you see just by going one street in from the prom fascinating but I guess it'd be pretty brutal actually living there, I don't think I'm that tough truth be told.

That building site you walked past has been empty for months, The developer went bust and no one else wants to pick up where they finished off, I lived in Blackpool down the other end for a year. No employment in the winter, low employment in the summer, It's like there's that small window in the summer where everyone rips each other off in order to go and hide in the winter, Blackpool has a zoo but you could call the whole town a zoo and in winter all the animals contained within it go into hibernation.

@@Randomanddesperate well it depends where you are in the country. If you’re in the west end of London your main cost is the land, the construction materials are a small percentage of your costs. If you’re in Blackpool or South Wales then building materials become a major part of your costs. This is partly why you see empty derelict buildings in poor areas, the banks won’t lend developers money if the end product is worth less than what you spent. I know someone that converted a building to flats on Topham street, it took almost two years and he just broke even. So two years of work for nothing. Its a shame and rightly called out for what is really happening in the Uk not only in Blackpool. The Government we have had for several years as got to be changed hopefully with Johnson gone things will get better. As you say our homeless and veterans is a disgrace for this country how they are left while thousands of illegal migrants are being let in the country going to 4 star hotels and then finding accommodation. This is the main problem over population Councils up and down the country are to blame feather their own nests and money not going where its needed for the people of Blackpool. Cheap labour being brought in Government and councils and do gooders who think more of migrants and foreigners than their own kind. Its not only Blackpool in decline its a lot of areas in Britain and if something doesnt change and fast Britain will be a third world over populated country and god help the next generation. You are right to call it out like it is, and I also follow "Walk on the Wild Side, Stephen" who also tells it like it is, The Truth.

Yes, the town has it's problems - as you say, worst poverty in the UK. Despite staycations, UK holidays loose out compared to overseas, so less tourists visit Blackpool than used to. It is the tourists who bring the money in. But with less tourists, less business for Hotels/shops/etc and if theres no business, they will close. The council does invest in the town, but theres only so much money. One of my former schools has been massively expanded and the other totally rebuilt. There are some smashing areas of Blackpool - but no town is paradise all over.

Many tourist cities have this issue of having a council that only care about the façade, Gloucester is similar.. a lot of money is spent on the area around the cathedral and less so the docks and the rest of the city gets neglected. Those that can afford it move to Cheltenham What's the point in paying council tax when it's spent disproportionately

It is a real shame how the council have let certain areas become so run down especially the areas between Lytham Road and the Promenade and around Waterloo Road/Bond Street and also the areas behind the North Shore and behind Talbot Road There are numerous causes of this including decline in tourism especially weekly/fortnightly stayers. Focus on the promenade to the detriment of places like Bond Street which even 10 years ago was still bustling. Most seaside resorts are the same. Blackpool was always fortunate in that there used to be a lot of industry as well, however that has declined increasing levels of poverty.

Dylan Thomas said this about Swansea, his home town It's appropriate for Blackpool too - “An ugly, lovely town ... crawling, sprawling ... by the side of a long and splendid curving shore. I brought my family down for the first time in 3 years, and I was really upset by the changes I saw. We spent an actual fortune while there, and have nothing to show for it. It was a huge money grab. And it's hard to see where the investment goes...shops etc that were boarded up and derelict last time we came down and years before that, still derelict and even more run down. The front has gaping wounds in the shape of derelict hotels. The back streets are awful. I work in the third sector and deal with poverty in my home town on a daily basis. Seeing it in Blackpool had me reading council reports and strategies on day 3 of my holiday to see what the fudge had gone wrong. What hit me hardest was seeing all the placques etc in memorial to people who had enjoyed blackpool and had sadly now passed on. It made me really sad for a Blackpool which is now gone. I have so many good memories.of visiting every year with my family since I was very small. Bringing my own children was an experience we sadly won't be repeating.

The problem with those new houses unfortunately is who can afford them? The social housing needs to be done up to make people not feel disenfranchised and left behind. Instead private property gets built and filled with people who often hold prejudice against those from a lower socioeconomic background and the divide just continues to widen. Blackpool's homeless issues need addressing too. However having one government after another who don't care about social investment makes my wishes feel pie-in-the-sky. Thanks for this great video as it was honest without being at all stigmatising 👏🏼

Blackpool represents just how low this country has come. Our government simply doesn't care, they've allowed millions to fall into a rutheless cycle of poverty and deprivation. The cost of living crisis and skyrocketing rent and mortgages are making it a nightmare for anyone from a lower/working-class background to live. 1/5 are now in poverty in the UK, can't even afford the basic essentials anymore. Social mobility has reached an absolute halt. The UK is losing it's right to call itself a first world country.

We were in Blackpool just a few weeks ago. And we sadly agree with you that the places we once liked. Such as the shops in Lytham Road. And Waterloo Road. Are so derelict, fire damaged, and boarded up. It will very likely put future holiday makers to stop having any more holidays in their hotels, and guest houses. We remember the Wakes weeks holidays that we used to enjoy. What is Blackpool Council doing to rejuvenate their Town. So we can return to enjoy more holidays there. To be honest it’s not a “Blackpool problem” it’s uk wide … many towns have town centres that are now boarded up, with drug gangs and anti social behaviour a huge problem…. I think Blackpool has so many great features including its fab people and the huge investments that are being made should help it … People don’t go shopping the way they did, so new uses need to be found for all the town centre vacant units. We often went of holiday to Blackpool for a week or long weekend. Due to not having too much to spend, our mother would look at cheaper hotels. I remember one was absolutely falling apart, cold, mold and damp in the room. It was in one of the seedier parts of the town. Honestly, there were drunk people walking down the street, I even seen a needle that was used. To top it off, we went to the south pier to have some fun, ends up my camera got stolen and my phone. I had some precious pictures on it. Last memory's of my grampa before he passed from cancer. Haven't been back since. They really need to invest in the area more. My aunt &cousin lives in St Anne's. Blackpool regrettably stands as a bench mark for degradation and deprivation of inner city life commonplace around the United Kingdom. I've not been to Blackpool for years but even back in the 1970s the Golden Mile was a machine designed to transfer money from visitors to businesses. The decay since then is horrifying and it appears the local council have nothing positive to offer. Sadly this is not unique to Blackpool. Scarborough is suffering similar slide into dereliction although not yet as far down the slippery slope. The town is choked with yellow lines, car parks are overpriced, the public conveniences stink (this makes them easy to find), everywhere needs some maintenance or at least a coat of fresh paint. If it wasn't for North Bay Fisheries I'd happily never go there again.
