If everyone had a dad like this... WE WOULD HAVE WORLD PEACE! 🗺 You inspire me to try building something myself again and I’m a disabled woman in the U.K. lol! Thank you 🙏 for all your hard work that goes into playing around with all of the different techniques, and filming and editing it, to show us what works. Some of us just aren’t able to do that level of experimenting so we really respect and admire those who do! 🙏 Your hard work allows us to just follow your tutorials and end up with a final finished product, and unless >WE< screw up there’s no wastage! A lot of people like myself really would be put off trying if we didn’t have this fantastic in depth guidance available, and IT COVERS EVERY SINGLE TECHNIQUE YOU COULD POSSIBLY NEED! OR EVEN IMAGINE! 😝👍

88x44. That's the size I'm going to build. Glad to see it looks huge! I just need to level the 2' slope and figure out my water situation.
@DIYPETE2 ай бұрын
Just seeing you shared what your slope is! Yeah the bobcat with teeth on the bucket should be able to get that 2' slope leveled I would think. We have a well so we use that. I know a lot of folks who use their normal water if they live in town as it is typically easier and less of a hassel then bringing in a water truck. But yes, 44x88 was a great size. Ours is now 120x60 - but i grew up with a 40x80 rink as a kid and that honestly was plenty! Plus 44x88 is a lot easier to maintain. As these rinks are a labor of love :)
@salazam2 ай бұрын
@@DIYPETE I mean, I used to play street hockey in the driveway, so if it's bigger than that I'm happy. I just calculated how many gallons that would be at 6" deep. 14k! Not including periodically resurfacing it. I think I'm going to wait till next season and knock out a few house projects first. I like your idea of putting a sign out for fill, as I too have a road traveled by many trucks out front.
@salazam2 ай бұрын
Nevermind, I thought it was going to cost like 2k in water because I was reading my bill wrong and calculating the mandatory minimum fee into the rate. Turns out it'll only cost like 85 bucks!!! The rink project is back on!!!!
@DIYPETEАй бұрын
Oh yeah, water cost should be minimal! Mine took quite a bit more water than that and when I paid for the city water to fill up my buddy's water truck, I think is was like $280 in water. I honestly use the well these days so it is free ---- until I need to replace my well pump.. knock on wood. Good news is i've had 5 years without any hiccups and the well pump is over 20 years old. Probably will be due for a new one at some point, but still working!

Looks great! Instead of running all that hose you should run a freeze proof hydrant out to the rink next summer.

Definitely improvements to look into! I love the idea of running a line out to a freeze proof hydrant. It would need to be hot water, so I'd probably come off a hot water line from inside the house similar to what I had to do when installing the outdoor hot water faucet eh? I'll have to think about the best way to do that as minimizing hoses ( storing, moving in/ out, clutter, kinks, etc ) is a pain! Thanks for the idea!

@@DIYPETE maybe make a hot/cold water manifold inside the house? Then you could save a couple bucks and only run one line but still have both hot or cold water at the hydrant. Possibility run some electric heat tape on the line to keep it warm in the winter?

Thanks for the ideas, I will definitely be looking into this come summertime. The easier it is and less work to resurface, the better! Thanks for the inspiration!

@@DIYPETE What about building a water tower to keep the water bill down year after year? A little chlorine or bleach or salt and vinegar to keep the algae and mosquitos at bay. Can't remember how many gallons you used in the end and how much that would cost you in water bill? Could be free well water in which case this may be irrelevant but let's say 2 stories up is 4 buried posts and 20 2x4's in supports with a deck on top that's 10'x10' in dimension. So 30-40 total 2x4's [40 supports if you build hand rails up top to enclose totes] and a few IBC Water Totes at 275 gallons each you can fit 1 on each corner of the tower deck that's 1100 gallons plus you could stack another set of 4 totes on top of those totes if needed (used totes about $50 each ish) May need rigidity reinforcement I didn't calculate the weight math of 2200 gallons

Start saving up your sawdust for next year. Mix it in with the water to make your own pykrete. Not just for taking up some of the volume, it also works great for keeping it frozen longer.

Very interesting! I'm going to research this pykrete stuff :) Cheers!

I live in MN and my dad built us a skating rink every yr when I was little. But he never went through all the things i"m seeing on you tube! all we did was simply shovel our yard from side to side and end to end. Then we started the hose with water. we simply kept shooting water around the whole yard. It's self leveling once you get the base ice above any little mounds in your yard. just keep doing layers until you have an even rink for your brothers to keep throwing you around on, and you're good to go! we never used a liner or any borders. ours was the ground and the snow mounds we shoveled around the edges.
