I want to try this but I’m wondering - Why do you need the PVC pipe there too? Couldn’t the poles just go into the ground? Thank you.
@Backyardscape
@Backyardscape 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the question. The PVC helps in a couple of ways. It keeps the pole sturdy in the ground. It's easier to bang in the PVC than to dig a hole for the metal pipe. Depending on your soil, its harder to keep the pole sturdy in soft soil without some type of concrete or gravel and then you can't easily remove the pole anymore. Good luck if you decide to hang your lights this way!

Your information was the best I saw. Others suggested Planters with cement but I thought those were eyesores. Your way is very practical and has a clean appearance. I will probably almost all your ideas.-Thanks!

Finally someone who added hoe to get the pvc pipe in the ground. I didn't want to dig a big hole that would need concrete. THANK YOU!

easy to understand for the minimal items in the backyard. this worked for my backyard because i have a similar layout. but if you dont have a fence, or trees this is an easy video and explanation to understand.

That’s a great idea. I’ve been thinking of hanging string lights over my deck, and was considering using 4x4s, but this would be a lot less expensive.

We bought poles that were specifically for this and they were so poorly made. This is so simple and helpful. BTW Those same $20 poles are now $45!! 😂

I think I would have liked more instructions via the video. I’m more visual and that might have been more helpful. Maybe seeing the placement of the eye hooks or 's' hooks would have been a help🤷🏻‍♀️

Quick thought - you may want to update the PVC pipe dimensions to show you need 1 1/2" PVC pipe. You say 2 inches in diameter and I mistakenly purchased 2" PVC and not 1 1/2" which actually measures 2' across. No biggie I had to go back to Lowes anyway :)

We figured we'd angle them out and they'd come in with tension. The angle was probably a bit more than needed, but we don't notice the poles, just the lights.

So what did you do when your PVC pipe filled with dirt as you pounded it into the ground?
@Backyardscape
@Backyardscape 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment. We would take the pvc out a couple of times and bang on the side to remove the dirt in the pipe. Then we could go deeper and allow the metal pole to go further inside the pvc.

What should the ratio be between the PVC pipe and the metal pipe? Also how far down do you put the PVC pipe into the ground?
@Backyardscape
@Backyardscape 3 жыл бұрын
We did 2 foot PVC pipes that we hammered into the ground. You can do 12-24 inches for the 10.5 inch metal piping. The deeper, the sturdier, but you might not be able to go that far, depending how how hard your soil is.

Hey, thanks for the comment. pvc is not an acceptable substitute. It will bend too much from the weight of the lights and after exposure to the sun will become brittle and break.

Where did you get the end caps with the S hooks for the top of the poles? I just ordered the poles and PVC , just need that last part..
@Backyardscape
@Backyardscape 4 жыл бұрын
Awesome, let us know how it goes for you. We got these endcaps at lowe's as well. www.lowes.com/pd/YARDLINK-Fits-Common-Post-Measurement-1-3-8-in-Actual-1-61-x-2-44-Chain-Link-Accessory-Black-Chain-link-fence-Rail-end/1000651807 For the S hooks, we had S hooks that we got from IKEA, but I just checked lowe's and any of those S hooks should work as well.

Thank you. Now when you pound in the pvc, How do keep the dirt from filling the hole thus leaving less depth for the pole to sit and stabilize and level out the project..
@Backyardscape
@Backyardscape 4 жыл бұрын
After pounding the PVC in the dirt, we were able to remove the PVC (and the dirt), empty the dirt out of the PVC and then put it back into the hole and then pound a little deeper. Hopefully that makes sense :)

How did you hang the lights from your house? Did I miss that in the video?
@Backyardscape

Thanks for the question. We used hangers shown in the link below that are stainless steel. They do a good job of keeping the light cord tight rather than regular hangers. www.lowes.com/pd/Hillman-Q-Hanger-Hook/3294966

Could you use PVC instead of fence or poles or Wooden poles?
@Backyardscape
@Backyardscape 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. You would have to get a larger diameter PVC pole dug deeper in the ground for it not to bend under the weight of the lights. Same thing with wood as well. If I had used wood, I would have used 2x4 or 4x4 buried in the ground several feet. We were going for a less permanent installation and smaller diameter poles.

are the end caps for the poles a need or is the project okay without them?
@Backyardscape
@Backyardscape 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, sorry it took so long to respond to this question. In our case, the cap had a a hole that we hung the S hook from. If you are hanging the S hook on the top of the pole, that should be fine as well.
