Petsmart just released their own line of Small Animal Cages and BOY ARE THEY JUST AWFUL and a setback in the appropriate care for our beloved pets! Watch as i put together their most expensive cage as i explain what a hamster needs and its proper enrichment. Get a good laugh out of me struggling to put together this cage, cause it was quite painful to do and hear the final verdict at the end of what i think about this hexagon design. As you can tell by the title, this isn't a cage people should use!

@@allieetsell760 I am an early morning stocker so I hardly deal much with customers but when I do and they want to buy somekind of small pet like a hamster and they ask me what is the best cage would be and they are just looking and researching and I always lead them to the bigger fish tanks like 55 gallon or one of the biger kaytee ones and then tell them to purchase a ball so it could go in and explore around the house to get excerise if they get a smaller enclosure. But yeah it sucks when you can't really deny a sale if you think they won't treat it good.

The Petco and Petsmart I usually go to at least have people who know about hamster care enough to tell you "Hey, if you want to get this, you're better off getting a large fish tank as a habitat for it. The small cages are really only suitable as travel cages."

PetSmart employee here too. We don't suggest these for syrian hamsters because they have the plastic tubes which they can get stuck in. Also, if people really want one, we strongly push for them to get more than one to connect them together (something the Kaytee Organization suggests for their cages as well). This rocket would/should be one of MANY rooms. (I personally suggest a very large clear storage crate with air holes, and direct them to DIY hamster crate sites).
@sydneytaylor8128
@sydneytaylor8128 6 жыл бұрын
@@ericalunde3233 Hamsters need one large area of continuous floorspace- not a bunch of smaller rooms connected. If the crate meets the minimum of 450 square inches, then the rooms are all fine. But just because you have 5 of these cages together that equals the minimum doesn't mean it's ideal.
@ericalunde3233

Sydney Taylor You’re right! And that’s what I was attempting to convey. Unfortunately there are some people who insist on these critter cages instead (not many in my area thankfully) and think they need only buy one, but that’s not how they were intended. These cages are awful, but the misinformation that you only use one makes it worse. Until pet stores stop selling these entirely, this isn’t going to stop. But employees can educate people to avoid cramping their hamsters anymore than intended.

I work in pets at home (uks biggest chain pet store) and we sell AWFUL cages and tanks too. Thankfully we're allowed to refuse animal/fish sales if we're not happy the animals are going to get what we need so (at my store anyway) we refuse to sell pets to customers unless their cage/tank is suitable. We'll always make sure the animals have what they need regardless of what our company sells.

Yupp that's why my Mom owned cats when I was little. They can mostly take care of themselves and also defend themselves if needed. I learned a lot from them like actually observe/study your pet and of course acknowleding that every animals has feelings and a personality too. Some things I had to learn the hard way which is why I am thankful that it was a cat because I personally don't think a hamster could have defendet itself as good without getting heart attacks daily because of the stress. I am currently thinking about getting a hamster, mouse or rat. If I ever manage to decide between one of these beautis I am gonna research thoroughly to enable a very good keeping. I managed to hold a lot of room on the walls free so I could buy/build something we germans call rundlauf. You basically attach tubes or whatever to the wall and kinda make a maze out of it but you also attach bigger cages to the wall.

I was at pet smart getting hay for my rabbits (aka the only thing I buy there) and I saw two girls who looked only a little younger than me. They were looking st hamsters really excitedly and I wasn’t paying much mind to them until one of them pointed to a bright pink critter trail and said “look this cute one is only $30!”. My heart dropped as I watched them look at a young Syrian hamster and my concern beat out my social anxiety. I approached them cheerfully and asked if they were buying a hamster. They said yes and I proceeded to tell them hamsters require at least 450sq inches and that the cage they were looking at only had 255. Conveniently the petsmart was in a strip mall with along with a target. I told them about bin cages and how I got an 850sq in cage for only $20 in the form of a bin cage. I hope they made the choice to do something better for their hamster but I’d guess they probably just got some small cage anyway because it was ‘easier’ since they were right there on the shelf. We need to get these awful cages off the shelves and we need to educate educate educate when it comes to small animal care!

Mine too. I have to clean surrendered cages with the hamsters I rescue so I can donate the cage to a shelter. It's a mess sometimes. If the cage is in too bad if a shape they just get thrown into the trash. But shelters need enclosures for temporary housing of the small animals they get in so that's how I repurpose them. As for this video I just ended up returning the cage for a refund. It's never fun having plastic tubing to clean.

Maybe they could have its eyes glow different colours if you're meeting the requirements, as an easy way to teach people proper animal care. A lot of people seem to get pets just for decoration, and no living creature should have to do that when we could hopefully replace that living creature with something non-living.
@WhutADrag
@WhutADrag 6 жыл бұрын
@@lpslunarskies9128 Down the line, sure. As I said, the robotic pet thing could be a starter for animal care; You get them the robotic one first, they show they can handle it and keep it happy, and then they can add a real animal into their house. I'm definitely not saying we should straight-up replace pets, just that our first experiences of taking care of something by ourselves should be something that won't be harmed if we end up getting something wrong ^^

I absolutely hate cages like this with good reason, when I was getting my first hamster I did months of research before I got him and decided I wanted to build a large bin cage for him. So we were at the pet store and I already had the bins bought and ready. After I had gotten my hamster the pet store employee was showing my mom these crap cages and literally I told BOTH of them I am using a bin cage but after a hour my mom told me no bin cage and made me buy this "fun" carnival themed cage. Let's just say my hamster escaped after 2 days and was never seen again. 😥 At least my mom learned her lesson and let me build a nice bin cage for my next hamster.

When I was a young teen, I had about 20 hamsters and did hamster rescue. My goal was to be an exotic animal vet when I got older so I had lots of pets. I was one of those weird kids that was super obsessed with my animals, and I always kept my hamsters in really nice large cages through the house (my mom loves hamsters too). My cousins who were 6yrs younger got a couple hamsters, and stuffed them into a tiny cage like this. I was heartbroken when I saw them, and told them about proper hamster care and how we could get them a bigger cage. Of course my cousins were very interested as kids want their pets to be happy. But instead my aunt yelled at me about it, and that I didn't know everything, and called me weird (I cried). Less than 3 months later I came home to the 2 hamsters in their tiny cage with a bunch of babies that my aunt had dumped at my house while I was at school since 'they bite' and 'what am I going to do with the babies, flush them? I could just set them free'. My mom was pretty pissed at her but wouldn't let her hurt them. When will people learn that pets aren't toys.

You would literally have to clean that cage every single day. That's what I don't get about people. They give their small pets enclosures like these, and then they complain that the animal smells. If you get a tiny cage like this, you have to clean it almost every day. But with a bigger enclosure (let's take a 40 gallon aquarium as an example), you only have to clean it once or twice a month.

My dog and rabbit from that age are still alive though, and I got a budgie who's completely spoiled and has a cage the size of me in a few weeks. (the reason why it's later is cause he's still small and clumsy.)

I thought it was crazy my parents who didn't have college education or even highschool education, were smart enough to do research, and wait for a year until i learned everything about them and yet his college educated parents did absolutely NO research and just went to a pet store and bought the first things they saw. I recently went to my uncles home for my birthday. I usually don't see him often because of family issues. When he picked me up my cozens, who were 5 and 10, were telling me about their new "pet". They told me they got a parakeet. When I went to their home I noticed that the birdcage was sitting near the window where you walked in. The bird was blue and yellow. When I went to their kitchen I noticed they had a fish tank. The tank had brown water which only filled half of the tank. The tank was small and square. When I looked inside I saw a big fish. The water was cold and stunk. washed the tank for them and my uncle told me that his children don't really take care of the fish. The fish was fine but overfeed. He looked very very ill. After I cleaned and put the fish back in to a nice warm fresh water tank I noticed something in the corner. A weird tank capsule was sitting next to the blender with a hermit crab in it. This crab looked dead and neglected. My uncle said he was not dead but I did not believe him. When he took him out the hermit crab started to run away. He put him back in and closed the capsule. Since I know a lot about animals I told him that this inclosure was not the type of tank to keep a hermit crab in. I tokd him he needed a heat lamp but he just ignored me. I went to look at the bird next and noticed she was shaking. I went to hold her but she bit me. I am usually great with birds but this bird seemed not okay. I asked my cozens why the bird was acting weird and they told me a friend of theirs gave them the bird one day. They said the bird owner kicked the cage a lot. The bird was poked an proded with fingers. Then I knew that the bird had been abused. The bird looked cold so I put her in front of a heater because she was near a freezing window. Her cage was small and covered in feces. They seemed to not care. When he finally fed her she ate almost half of the seeds in her food dish. But the funny thing is that they called her fatty when she was just a very skinny bird. I left that day feeling awful for the bird. My uncle said he wants to let it free but I said it was a tropical bird and could not be in this type of cold weather. What should I do?. Do I convince him to take it to a pet store or give the bird to someone else?. I am sorry for writing a whole story but I wanted to get every detail out. ................P.S- When I told my cozen that a pet was not a toy he said then what is a pet for?. I know now that these children are too little to even have a pet or even have the knowledge of what a pet is.

yo I once told a woman who was going to buy a poinsettia that those are toxic for cats and that she would be wise to put it out of reach from her cat ( she had a 6 month old kitten) and she looked at me as if I had insulted her grandmother. Or once a woman was selling those bird peanut butter stands (wooden houses that hold the jar) but she sold them with normal peanut butter jars in them and I told her that she better not do that because normal peanut butter is bad for birds but the people who buy the houses will think it is okay because they were sold with them. She got SO angry with me! people can get crazy when you educate them on animal care.

@@Cheshiregrinn91 My grandmother didn't believe me when I tried to tell her that her peace lily was toxic for her cat. The cat ended up with neurological symptoms and eventually ended up euthanized because she wouldn't listen when I kept telling her to get rid of the plant. I love houseplants, but I make sure that all of mine are cat-friendly types and even then most of them are kept in hanging baskets mounted to the walls out of reach. The only one the cats can reach is the velvet plant and they don't bother it because it has a bitter flavor even though it's harmless. Both cats have gone through that moment of being too curious and having a test-nibble, only to realise that it tastes REALLY bad and neither has ever touched it again. It astounds me that people don't understand how toxic plants can be, especially to obligate carnivores like cats.

*GET A BIN CAGE* I cannot stress this enough. if you or your child *really* wants a small pet/hamster, invest in a bin cage. You can make cheap lids, and you can get large bins at places like Walmart (I don't know how it is outside of America) for a good price. Drill some holes in the top walls for extra ventilation if you feel a mesh/wire top isn't good enough. if you have you or your child has their heart set on a small animal, *dont buy one of these cages as shown in the video* they are ultimately a waste of money, as within a few days or weeks that hamster is going to die from a lack of a proper home environment, and then you, the parent, will have to explain life and death to your child. do you *really* want to do that?

There’s no avoiding the life and death conversation. Especially with fish or hamsters since they have short lifespans. It’s also not a bad lesson to teach. I had a Leopard Gecko when I was ten and it unfortunately got sick and died within a couple months. Because I lost Gordon I’ve become more careful in terms of researching and meeting the needs of animals and thoroughly making sure if getting a kind of animal is good for me and the pet.

As a child we used to have several family owned pet shops in town & they were all knowledgeable. They helped me create an awesome big fish tank with levels and wooden budgie ladders (not even slightly steep) from one level to the next for my female mice. Since Petsmart & Pets At Home came to town, I've watched all of the small pet shops close. Now there are none. It's really sad these big guys have dominated the market, esp as they are REALLY expensive compared to the old pet shops. Supermarkets beginning to sell pet food and bedding also knocked the pet shops on the head. It's sad.

Arugula. The plant that parents want is arugula. Carnivorous plants are like the hamsters or beta fish of the plant world. Proper husbandry for carnivorous plants (and obviously there's a huge range here) is a mix between fish husbandry and reptile husbandry. We're talking a meticulously kept reptile vivarium (heating, humidity, special lighting with a timer, and all) where you need to monitor the pH & nutrient levels of the substrate. You even need to keep feeder animals, and let some of the plants go dormant during the winter. The worst part for kids is probably that you can't poke the plants outside of feedings since, unlike animals, the plants have a limited number of times they can move. Arugula is perfect, though. It's a hardy little plant that goes from seed to harvest in a month. There are visible changes for the kid to measure and track each day, and the seeds are cheap enough that you can have a bunch going at once as experiments (e.g., what happens when you grow one on a windowsill and another under a bed, or what do the leaves taste like at different stages). It can also be really cool for kids to help cook a meal using food that they planted--even kids who don't like greens might eat ones that they grew. Then you let the plant go to seed, and watch in awe as the process repeats. It's a low-commitment, low-cost, educational and nutritious endeavor. There's really no downside. So, yeah. Any parents reading and looking to get your kid a convenient and space-efficient living thing as a toy, go buy some arugula seeds, soil, a ruler, and a notebook. Write Arugula Adventures on the cover of the notebook, hand the bundle to your kid(s), and call it a day. It's the way forward. All of the pet animals and carnivorous plants will thank you.

Say it with me! *Hamsters 👏 are 👏 not 👏 toys!* This is exactly why I have boycotted Petco, Petsaver, Petsmart and Chewy.com (run by Petsmart). I buy everything from Amazon or DIY.

This makes me anxious thinking about all hamsters that are living like this. I’m not a hamster person but I am a proud rat mom to 4 precious little girls. Well sorta big girls by now. Their names are Violet Baudelaire, Sunny Baudelaire, Esmé Squalor and Carmelita Spats but for short just Violet, Sunny, Esmé and Carmelita. The names are from my favorite book series. I love my girls so so so much and it would break my heart to keep them in a tiny cage. They have a big cage and are allowed to run around freely in half of my apartment several hours a day. My kitchen floor and hallway are like more theirs than mine I feel like, constantly stepping over toys and boxes and stuff for them. But they love running around on the floor so I don’t mind. Violet and Sunny come on recall, not Esmé and Carmelita yet. They’re sorta rescues that I haven’t had for very long. Violet can also spin both left and right on command. I enjoy your channel. Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪💖

These cages are nothing but abuse! It's so sad and makes me cry when people view animals on the same level as toys. The way these cages are marketed are beyond disgusting and wrong on so many levels. These cages are basically advertising animals as living toys to play with. This is practically the same thing as Lego or Barbie where they make people buy more and more and more except this is turned into animals abuse by adding a live animal into a playset. Nothing but animals abuse. Animals lives are just as important as YOURS. They need HUGE cages, loads of bedding, high quality foods, a myriad of toys, and RESPECT. Animals are LIVING BEINGS NOT TOYS!

Here is a solution to this wide spread problem...my hamsters live in tupperwares...now yes that sounds terrible. But don’t worry I buy gigantic containers with lots of floor space (no lids) my hamsters love it. Containers are also only about 3-5 dollars, depending on the size too! 😁🐹♥️ Edit: oh I guess she does too 😂

It pains me to see this. Hamsters, mice, and every other animal out there should have what they need. Would someone lock there kid in a SMELLY room with food, water, a very very thin sheet as a mattress, and one source of entertainment. However, this one source causes immense pain. The lights also turn on up to someone else's liking. Plus they are seen as nothing but a toy This is what these cages are. How do you expect a full grown Syrian hamster to live happy in this cage, let alone run on that tiny 5 inch wheel? Any animal, for that matter. This is a death trap disguised in a children's toy (or a hamster cage). As one of the leaders of a large group of rodent lovers, I see this as torture. It's like putting the person you love most in a jail cell.

I’m 11 years old. I have begged my mom forever for me to have a hamster and she said not until I’m 10. Even I know all the necessities a hamster needs and what and what not to give your hamster. For instance a hamster cannot eat iceberg lettuce. But they can eat romaine lettuce. I feed my hamster every other day and he lives in a 20 gallon tank. I do not support cages with metal wires. If I were a mother and my child wanted one of these cages, I would say absolutely no. Hamsters are so overlooked.

I don't think we are as bad as the Chinese market for small animals however but we really are quite neglectful and disrespectful when it comes to owning small pets like pocket pets as companions. :(
