While in college, I was known as "the car guy". One of my coaches asked me if I could help him fix an oil leak in his Maxima. I of course said yes. Once I realized this was going to involve dropping the front subframe and replacing the entire oil pan I knew I was in way over my head. Refusing to admit the limits of my abilities, I posted the question on Quora. Some guy sent me all the sheets from the factory service manual with an annotated list of the steps and all the tools and part numbers I would need. I did the whole replacement in about 6 hours in my coaches driveway. Aside from the $100 and 12 pack of beer (probably an NCAA violation) the gains in clout were priceless. Those were the good old days of asking a serious question on the internet and getting a real and helpful response. Every day we stray further from god's light.

These younger cats now days are like a jelly fish. They have no spine or brain and now some no PeePee to put it nicely lol. I’m a OPs Manager for a big branch in Orlando for a Fortune 500 company and we provide a service that requires driving a semi tanker truck. All my drivers are mid 30s are older and most mid 40s and up. The younger generation just isn’t smart enough. They mentally can’t handle it and their work ethic is non existent. I don’t discriminate as I love all people young old and I don’t see race but when I interview people it’s the older ones who get the job because they are the most qualified. The problem with our company is they would rather hire someone based on their color of their skin then to hire them based on experience and their personality. It pisses me off to know end.

Actually the reply to not negotiate isn't entirely wrong. Don't come out of the gate negotiating because they'll jack their prices up to make back what you're trying to negotiate off the car. Wait until they put the final price tag in front of you and are ready to sign. Now you know the actual price of the car and not the inflated price they gave you to cover your immediate negotiation tactic. Once you know the sticker price and the paperwork is ready to sign do you really think he wants to lose all that time and effort spent on you whereas you on the other hand, who have not signed anything, can simply walk away and he's out all that time and effort. Timing is everything. ;)

I don't negotiate because I find it exhausting and tedious. Do your research know the ball park of what the car is worth and if they try and high ball you just walk away. If they are willing to mislead you about the price then they are going to mislead you on something else, like if the car was previously damaged, in an accident or poorly maintained by the previous owner.

the car scene is filled with lots of aggressive people who always think they're right, i feel like mike is probably just a byproduct of that scene, but only acts that way in that scene. you see it all the time, and this definitely isn't exclusive to mike. if you spend any time on a car forum, people will argue endlessly on really subjective topics (usually car mods, and custom work). also asking questions in the car scene is a good way to make yourself look like an outsider. for example, if you've ever asked a question about cars on reddit, or a car centric discord, most people will probably just make fun of you instead of answering your question. which is really counter intuitive, and made it really difficult for me to get into cars, because it constantly felt like i was being put down for being curious about cars, and the process behind fixing and repairing them, a lot of my knowledge came from chrisfix.

@martinschlegel18232 жыл бұрын
And from personal experience, how important it is to know how to change your wheel to your spare depends a lot on how you use your car etc. Many cars don't even come with spares any more. My parents had to get a spare because there car did have a mounting place under the vehicle but no actual spare installed... If you drive mostly in cities etc. and tow services in your area of the world don't charge higher fees than top level surgeons or if you have an insurance that helps with this kind of problem, some automobile clubs do as well, you might not urgently need to know how to swap your wheel with a spare. I drive through the peruvian amazon jungle and andean mountains all the times - sometimes having no cell service and many many hours to the next car shop, I wouldn't leave with my car for a major drive without checking the spare and sure as hell know how to put it on. Also not just an "emergency tire" half as wide as the rest or some of that shit, I have 5 identical tires properly maintained and rotated, propper pressure, emergency air pump, the original car jack plus a second one just in case etc. But most of my German friends really don't need to know this kind of stuff. If they get into such trouble, they call the ADAC (German automobile club) and get some proffesionals to fix the problem...

When I bought my car I came up with what price I wanted to pay on it and made the offer, it was marked $12k and kbb was $10k and I called up and offered $9k and they accepted the offer. Love the car and have no regrets, been a few years and it still worth more then I paid.

Ive always loved the Cobalt SS. I'm an import guy but I had that as one of my first cars in NFSMW 07' I think and I would always upgrade it after a boss race. It got so fast that it was able to last all the way up to the last race and win effortlessly. Although it's just a game, that car became special to me
@nthgth Жыл бұрын
I get that. But IRL, the Cobalt had a pretty good platform, even the base automatic, and the SS Supercharged was a pretty quick and very affordable runabout. Chevy also offered "Stage" upgrades for the supercharger for up to I think 325 hp, with warranty. *That last bit might actually be the SS _Turbo,_ which (in stock 260hp form) outperformed the Evo X in Car and Driver's "Lightning Lap" event at the grueling road course VIR.
@brandonrasmussen66923 жыл бұрын
Fun Fact the automatic caliber has a CVT transmission and if you install a overdrive button for revers you could go just as fast backwards as forwards because it's a continuously variable transmission

On the tires most manufacturers don't out a spare in to 'save weight' (money) they instead put in fix a flat equivalent and an air pump of course it expires and will get hard likely when you actually need it. Yup it makes a mess and a tire shop will charge you additional labor for cleaning it up but yeah I've had to clean it and it's a royal pain to clean.

Things you should do Once a week before starting your car that I learned in the Army: 1. Turn on your lights and Hazards and walk around the car to make sure they are working (will prevent you being pulled over, break lights you will need someone to check for you or back to a wall and ensure you see red lights on both sides of the car from the wall) 2. Check under the car for fluid leaks (water is fine likely from humidity/frost) 3. Check Tire Pressure and tread 4. Check fluid levels (oil/washer top off if needed) 5. check engine belts for tearing or fraying 6. check to make sure the batteries cables are securely fastened. 7. check to make sure your seat belts fasten correctly 8. Check Horn 9. Check emergency break works by putting the car in neutral and ensuring the car does not roll while engaged. 10. Ensure none of the check engine lights are showing after initial start and there are not any strange sounds.

I had a supercharged SS Cobalt. Really liked that car a lot, drove fantastically and never left me hurting for more power. Love the LSJ, but buyers beware: the stock open dif on the 5-speed transaxle has a tendency to blow after 150K or so miles. If you are planning on getting into one that has more than roughly 110-120K miles, I would try to budget in an OE LSD install or transmission swap for a trans with an OE LSD. It happened to mine right after I spent a couple hundred bucks replacing some of the running gear, just drove it out and down the road before I heard a pop then my car didn't drive in gear anymore.
@nthgth Жыл бұрын
I was early in college when those came out, I really wanted one! But it was not to be, $-wise, despite that the car was super affordable for what it was. Then the Turbo came along with the LNF and Brembos and defeated the Evo X at Lightning Lap! Shows GM can build an excellent sport compact when they want, such a shame they stopped wanting to so quickly. Naturally since they were affordable and fun, they're mostly trashed nowadays.

Ngl the tire changing answer was spot on. Most new cars don't even come with spare tires and instead have precharged compressors that spray the goo like bro mentioned. And honestly it might for the best, I don't want my mom out in the field having to deal with all that. I'ma gonna continue to rock my fullsize spare but for sedans and other cars that are strictly road going I'm gonna have to agree that run flat compressors are they way. Man's answer was fire, we just have to consider the fact that most people aren't driving clapped out beaters (or project cars as we like to call them) so it just makes less sense to know how to change a tire if it's not something most cars even have these days.
@malachigrey48953 жыл бұрын
I think phd was saying to physically swap the tire from the rim. Swapping the wheel with the spare (like you said) and filling it up from a folded position to save space is common

@MrWarfd0012 жыл бұрын
Simple , get a vaccum cleaner hose and duct tape it to your exhaust and the other end to the turbo. The super glue the turbo to the roof of your car (with intake aimed forward of course) then duct tape another hose from the turbo back down under the hood and into the air intake ( you might need to duct tape the hood down as it won't close with the hose going in it. Simple

I listened to the neutral bomb advice when I was much, much younger and far less experienced. I snapped a CV shaft. Also discovered that my T-bird's parking break cable had snapped, which I apparently missed in my excitement when buying the car. Had to sit in the car with my foot on the brakes for an hour until a tow truck came. Happened to be 30 minutes out of the city. DON'T DO NEUTRAL BOMBS.

I will say there was a huge survey a few years ago, and it showed that buying a car was the worst experience for an adult (over 80% of adults stated that buying a car was "worse than burying a loved one"). The number 1 reason people dislike the car buying experience was listed as "haggling"...people hate not having a clear price.
