I'm a retired police officer, I worked for a township police department in the country. I had just stopped at a fruit farm and purchased some apples. Then I got a call of cattle out on a road, well when I arrived there were numerous cattle on the road. I sat for a second and thought, how am I going to get them back in the field. Well I got my new bag of apples and broke them in two and throwing them in the field as far as possible. It worked too my surprise. Then started fixing the fence with the tools that I carried in my cruiser. I didn't know cow's like apples, I don't know why horses do! God bless.

To this day, cattle are one the things about my rural western Iowa childhood that I miss most. Especially in springtime when the young calves practically have springs in their feet! My parents are retired, and Dad sold off the remainder of the herd probably 20 years ago. Spent a lot of time checking fence before moving them into new pasture. The first thing the herd would do is to check out the perimeter of the whole pasture! My Mom also probably misses the cattle. She seemed to fool us every year on April 1 by waking up early in the morning and yelling something to the effect of "Wake up! The cattle are out!!". With corn around, there was the danger that they could get into that and founder, possibly dying. By the time my brother and I would have our boots on, Dad had already ran the 100 yard dash down to the water tank by the cattle yard before realizing it was April Fools day! Great memories.

We had 8 head of escapees last weekend due to a high winds breaking trees. While we were in the process of splicing 5 strands of barb, we had a group on each side of us trying to create their own exits. I finally had to get crazy on'em. Poor lil buggers probably have nightmares about me chasing them and screaming all kinds of pretty colorful words 😂🤣. Oh, by the way ... After seeing your Jake's wire tightening tool, we ordered one AND LOVE IT! Lil pricey on the clips but well worth it. Thanks Mike.

Here in Louisiana, we call a T-post driver a “mother-in-law”... the tale goes that when your mother-in-law is being too nosey, you need one of these to put up a fence to keep her out. Gotta love old tradition! Lol

I was raised on a Montana cattle ranch. Many ranchers had a good cow dog as did we as constant work companions and helpers. Blacky the cow dog loved to "train" fence jumpers by putting them back one the "right" side...........

I like that tool you have that tightens the barb wire. We use a crow bar and stretch it around a post and it takes two of us. One pulling on the crow bar and one nailing the staples in, but we get it done. At least your cows did not wander to far off.

We had 2 great cow dogs (Australian Blue Heeler & Border Collie). We could leave gates or barn doors open and they would only go up to the edge because they knew if they dared crossing, they would have a snoot full of dog. New cows/heifers found out quickly. They even knew where broken fences were and would drive cattle back thru. EXCEPT 1 cow (Bernadette) knew how to escape each night in the spring/summer. The dogs did not even bother with her. We'd wake up and there she would be laying on the front lawn, under the big shade tree, chewing her cud. My sister would just shout out to her to go back in the barn for milking and she'd get up, walk thru the front door of the barn and into her stantion. We never needed to tie up any for milking. They were all big pets anyways. Take Care!

Ever thought of putting a strand of electrified wire on fences. Stops cows rubbing and pushing fences down. You can get away with lighter posts cheaper wire and tend to last longer. Your long straight stretches are ideal for this but deep snow can be a problem.

add a "hot line" about 3'' away from the fences, that way it deters any animal from getting too close to the fence, yes it's going to be a pain to do some of it but if it saves 1 cow/bull from getting creamed on the hwy it's well worth the time and money, just a thought.

When I Was a child the cows had gotten out and come down to the house ! All 85 Holstein milk cows ! In the pitch black dark! Ive always been blind in the dark and was surprised when I went to run out to the car on the walkway and ran straight into a cow and bounced off her side and hit the ground! I looked up and had a audience of cows looking at me! Always tearing the wire fence down!

I when outside a little later and one of the biggest bulls I had ever seen was walking though the fence next to her house. I went back in the house a told her is not jumping the fences he was just walking though them. He walked around in her yard for awhile then went someplace else. I think he just went anyplace he wanted to.

Mike nice to see the make do and mend solution. You're probably a bit like me want it doing right straight away, but have to be realistic, I suppose ranch life makes you become a realist, especially at this time of year. Becoming disabled with a spinal injury, it has been hard adjusting to not being able to just get things done like I used to, or want to, did see a brilliant quote the other day, which you might consider putting on the wipe board. "The greatest enemy of a good plan is the dream of a perfect plan." Carl von Clausewitz.
