I assembled a little volca rig for fun (modular, drum, nubass, keys, and the mixer). They are pretty little toys that let a classically trained musician like me pretend to know how to make techno (i'm not much of a step-sequencing kinda guy, i typically just play what i want to hear on keys, but this little rig is helping me learn the ropes.

I've hardly touched mine, but the NuBass is a nice addition to the volca lineup in isolation. The tube is a gimmick though. It does actually sound nice, different character than the other clones I have. Really it's the volca footprint that sells it though. It's doesn't play particularly nice with the Keys/Bass IMO, but it's great in combo w Kick and Drum. Actually really highlights the Kick since the Kick also always felt like it didn't belong. Now it has a friend. I'm keeping it.

I have one and love it, but yeah definitely not perfect. The thing is constantly going out of tune and it sucks you can't use it as a drone because the notes don't sustain. Also build quality isn't great, my volume knob will be turned all the way down sometimes but then it gets knocked and sound starts cutting in when it shouldn't. Where it really shines though is those random buttons. You can put in a single note sequence and just spend an hour jamming out on it by changing the slides/accents/transpose, and saving the ones that are good and then going back to them later. There's been so many grooves I've played on it that I would have never discovered on my own without those random buttons. From a fun perspective it's a 10, but from a versatility and reliability perspective, a 4.

Now I am looking for stuff to do with it on youtube and my first stop is of course - bad gear! 😁👍 the only thing that annoyed me, was that the free software bundle is not entirely compatible with windows(DAW for example-mac only)

It actually has a sound of it's own - don't know what to think about it but definitely it's more than just another TB-303 knockoff and kudos to Korg for taking the risk with this instrument and their nutube stuff in general. Especially now with whatever the hell i's going on with Russia which sits on the biggest pile of post-military tube stock, access to quality vacuum tubes is getting only more and more scarce. With this kind of voltage I don't know if it makes much of a difference (just like it didn't do much in older tube-powered Korg/Vox gizmos) but they ceirtanly know their way around it and the end result is impressive.

Korg needs to bring out some new Volcas cause we're almost through all of them at this point. I'm not just saying that because I unironically love the Volcas. IMHO the OG Volca Bass is better than the Nubass, but I can't say that I wouldn't mind having some of the Nubass' functions on the Volca Bass. Maybe they should come out with a newer version and call it the Newbass.

Almost tempted by a Noobase... But! Compared to the "Old Bass", it does allow DAW users to control the filter via MIDI, rather than a Big Knob (TM)? lol. I did try a (2HP modular) MIDI Filter to control the sound output from the OLD Bass, but it was "just not the same"! But, with the cost of "modular", limits of Volcas might be a blessing... :P As to the "sound" of Valves (VT's) versus solid state: Uz (bedroom!) Guitarists have been arguing for years? :D Impressed as ever by the "Beat Kids" - Over us (aged?) DAW users! Hands on Hardware is much more fun...

Although I wouldn’t recommend it because it is totally unnecessary. On the flip side…my Triton Extreme tube is still running strong since 2006. I am bot too impressed but then I never got the whole 303 thing anyway. Every half decent, sequencer driven monosynth gets close enough providing it has portamento plus a few real time wiggleable controllers.

I don't feel like the nubass offers enough. Saw some dude making a guitar amp from it. Wish korg or someone else made a traditional synth from this fancy fluorescent high efficiency valve.

One of the few Bad Gear videos where I actually end up thinking "Yeah, this synth ain't that good" - I think either the original Bass or even the Kick (which is the only Volca I kept because I love it) is a better choice. Unlike NuMetal, the NuBass did not add anything meaningful to the world, but if there were no other synths, this is my last resort.
