i used to think serum sounded bad and is too thin or not warm. The truth is actually quite thick and lush if you know how to UTILIZE serums souund design tools properly. YES it lacks sort of the true warmth of anologue, but the sounds that u can make from it when u master sound design comes very close to analogue. AGIAN FOR SOMEONE WITH LESS TIME> OUT OF THE BOX COULD NOT MAKE THESE LUSH SOUNDS EASY, it would be easier to just purchase sylenth or uhes zebra or something more analogue sounding

This is such an important point! I used wavetable synths before - like the on that comes with live or the excellent vital, which is a little undersold in this video to be honest. And while those provide you with more or less the same options, it wasn't until I bought serum when I truly started to get into sound design. Serum told me how to design exactly the sound I am looking for. Now I can do it with all the others but I still use serum on every track because it is just so easy and intuitive to work with.

I've only played with Serum a few times, but what stood out for me is the filter selection. As a mostly west-coast/modulation person it blows my mind when I do reach for a filter and am surprised that most softsynths don't offer many types. Also while it's obviously designed and marketed for EDM I'm sure that Serum can sound more subtle and varied without too much work.

i did rent to own on serum through splice like 3 years ago when i first got started. it has been my go-to synth because of how many sound packs are being offered by really good sound designers. there are things you can do in processing to add warmth to the synth. i personally run all my serum tracks through a tape vst to add that subtle warmth and grit that can make all the difference.

Good watch! As someone who has dabbled in many modern Drum & Bass tunes, the reality is that Serum is good for both analog and extremely digital sounds. The basic waves and noises can yield fantastic results with some of the misc LPs in terms of sounding analog, while the reverb and comb filters are in a league of their own in terms of assisting with the creation of harsh leads and basses. Genuinely really surprised that more synths haven't implemented a reverb filter like this one has.

Thats how I feel when I use DAWs (so I don't). Hey Florian, I've got a question for you - when you do these productions week after week, doesn't it feel crazy stressful to come up with 3 jams for each episode? I mean it's probably a great way to discipline yourself to be creative but still, I always kinda wondered about that. Your Jam 2 is SICK btw!

This video nails it. I got Serum for the power, barely use it because of the sound.

Genius as always. I've owned so much gear that's been your subject matter, but I had an epiphany regarding hardware synths... Most of them are fancy software driven controllers. I've sold off every piece of hardware except my SH-4D. I'm pretty sure it'll soon be on a Bad Gear episode and hopefully before you review the Gaia 2. I've got the Serum Demo but I don't see myself shelling out two Benjamins for it. Vital has become a mainstay with it's ability to run so many modulators in stereo, but NOTHING can keep up with Phase Plant. Amazing visuals and music in this episode. (If I weren't on a minimal fixed income I'd probably be a Patreon guy!)

The Korg Z1 promised so much and delivered so little in the late 90s. Due for a Bad Gear roast?!

Nicely balanced. That first jam captured what I've always found difficult about software synths in general - they overpower absolutely everything else. It takes a lot of work to thin them down to mix properly with all my analogue and digital stuff, so whilst they have that initial "wow" factor, you quickly tire of them and go back to hardware!

To be honest this was the best demonstration of Serum - at least compared to when I scoured KZbin two months ago to decide between Serum and Pigments. I knew I should have gotten Serum - it just has more character than most other software.

I love the interface and control but something often sounds soulless about serum. It really does have the best interface in soft synths tho. So quick capable and a pleasure to use.

Just throw the chaos gen on your detune and filter cutoff. Maybe your wavetable for good measure. Wow. So analog now.

Thank you for always bringing a smile on my sad face and for being amazing with wording lieber Freund!😂 Ich habe nur eine Frage, nämlich ; How much gigabyte ram should i have to not destroy my cpu?😅
@iamdwsm Жыл бұрын
It's something about wavetable synthesis, serum included, where like you say the sounds feel empty, like they're missing something, like they lack weight. I don't know quite how to put it. And it's not a digital vs analog sort of thing. There are some incredible soft synths out there, just something about wavetables, I don't know? Regardless, as always, amazing video!

Not using a fixed velocity and having it modulate the gain and other parameters would already make it less soulless. People just tend to use it in a specific way. It's a musicians job to bring soul into their music.

bass music producers like myself in the early 2010's migrated so quick to serum and the music everyone was making sounded distinctly "serum-ey". it's a fantastic investment but for me, massive is still the one.

I mainly use serum to convert drum loops and reprocess complex wt positioned lfo mods into simple wts, or cool sounds on other hardware synths i use, to send to my hardware wt synth (modwave): And the resynthesis on serum is great. You can say serum is cold or tinny, but with all the filters it has, and eq options, I'm thinking it's all how you use it. Maybe it's easier to make a thin tone than a fat one, but you can still do it on serum. One last thing ive always liked about it too is you can make your own sounds also with the formula parser. I've actually made lots this way that I like at least Love the memes though!

What's mind boggling is Dune 3 (which was on a really good sale for less than half the price of Serum earlier this summer) has tons of modern high quality wavetable goodness without burning so much CPU. I'm using a Ryzen 3900X, but it's still very unusual for a premium software synth made/updated in the past few years to eat...maybe a few percentage CPU while over 30 voices of polyphony are active on an absolutely indulgent pad preset. It's just incredibly powerful for polyphonic sounds. Effortlessly more rich and vibrant for the ears than the often heavily desaturated visuals of the recent Dune movie were for the eyes. Easily lends itself to trance of course, but I'm sure with some tweaking it could do plenty of other genres. Also has some really good filters. Synapse did a pretty good Minimoog emulation, and clearly folded that work into their flagship as well for improved virtual analog goodness.
