Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Lennar Digital Sylenth1. Is this ancient virtual analog synth plugin similarly influential as hardware classics like the Yamaha DX7 or Korg M1. Can it hold up when compared to other software instruments like Serum, Massive or Spire?

Wow, unexpected instant nostalgia flash. Sylenth1 was my 16-year-old-I-don't-know-what-I'm-doing-at-all-but-this-knob-makes-it-sound-cooler synth, having the knowledge nowadays and seeing the ui now makes it almost feel like completely different thing to me, if that makes any sense. @FileFox707 no parties like that where I lived. But that’s not the synths of the 90s. That’s the rejected 80s technology that kids got on the cheap and made cool stuff with. Synths in the 90s were black slabs of presets. DX7 (that thing lasted well into the decade…), SY55, Proteus and M1… lots of M1. And no one programmed them. It was boooring! Not a Minimoog in sight.

This was a great video, but it feels a bit weird to me to see a retrospective review of a piece of software that's still for sale (and apparently still getting updated). I think I'd be more interested to hear about discontinued synths like Steinberg's Neon, rgc audio's Triangle, or the old Linplug stuff, if you can get them to work. Even older software like Band in a Box or Dance Ejay might be better for memes and lolz though.

Sylenth1 is an amazing virtual analog synth and was the first VST i ever bought! While being obviously completely virtual, it somehow has that analog feel to the sound. @AudioPilz I still today use my own licensed copy of Sylenth1. The big USP here I think must be its extremely low impakt on CPU. You can easily use it on an unlimited number of tracks in Ableton on an old Mac Book Pro from mid 2000. Great episode :)
