These bad kitchen trends you should avoid, if your plan is a functional kitchen! There are better solutions, which I try to provide throughout. Of course, like any bad kitchen trend, this is completely subjective. However, being in the kitchen industry for this long has helped me form some opinions on these kitchen trends.

You know, 6 years and I've never had anything fall off the lazy susan in my corner cabinet. My parents had one and it was never a problem. I grew up with them so never questioned what other people do with their corner cabinets. It's always been where baking crap was stored because my Mum doesn't like to bake and I've done the same. I bake maybe 2-3 times a year? I suppose it works for kitchen items that you don't like to use very often.

I am a cabinetmaker. When I make lazy Susan cabinets, a 1/8” Masonite piece is wrapped around the inside of the cabinet 5/8” from the trays, this ensures nothing is going to fall off and get lost in the cabinet and you don’t actually loose any functional space

How long has this been a thing? My lazy Susan was installed 24 years ago 😱, and I loose things in the back all the time. I am in the process of remodeling my kitchen and have asked that the Lazy Susan be removed.

Instead of a lazy susan cabinet, make corner drawers. You lose a little space on each side but the drawers are 100% better than a lazy susan.

I had a LS corner piece in my kitchen for years, and never had a problem since there was a 1” lip on the moving shelves. I’m just designing the cabinets for my new kitchen, and I’m having a LS cabinet put in. I think it’s a fine solution to use the space in the corner not otherwise very accessible.

Our 14 year old son warned us 10 years ago that the micro over the stove was a bad idea. He reminds us of it every time he watches us trip over each other. NEVER AGAIN!

Yes, I would GLADLY trade the microwave over the stove for a hood that actually vents outside, but us apartment dwellers usually have no choice.

@@barbara1904 No, I have a normal sized 1950s ranch kitchen. I only have two upper cupboards that would fit a microwave and the storage is far and away more useful than a microwave. As for putting a microwave in a drawer, I already have a dishwasher (that I will NOT give up as it gets used daily) that takes up the space of one set of lower cupboards and I would loose the 3 large storage drawers that I do have if I put a microwave there. If I didn't have a microwave/vent I would still have to have a vent so no space is actually added to the usefully cook area but usable space would be lost to the new microwave placement.

@@barbara1904 yes, I know. That's why I have always wished for a REAL vent fan. Right now, though, I have a seriously tiny kitchen that is literally smaller than many closets. I'd be happy to have a microwave over the stove with at least a filter. My microwave is on a baker's rack, with a power strip zip tied to the back (because, evidently in the 1930s they thought electric appliances were a passing fad, I have two outlets in my kitchen) I'm enjoying the challenge of making it work, and my love of this quirky old apartment outweighs the disadvantages.

The lazy Susan corner cabinet is the only thing that works in our kitchen. We just finished remodeling and our new one is far superior to the one it replaced. It has a shelf under the rotating part and it doesn't have a central post which makes a huge difference. I've found it's perfect for my pots, pans, and larger bowls. It holds a lot and is easy to access.

I'm glad you have one that functions well. Not having the centre post is a big plus. And I think you are using it right by putting pots in it and not a half open bag of potatoes. lol

Love your channel. I wanted to tell you how I use my corner cabinet lazy susan. Instead of putting food in the cabinet, I use it for my pots and pans... it holds more than you think... and stuff falling off the back is moot.... no room for it to fall off.

I used my lazy susan all the time, I even removed the old upper with a blind corner and put in a new cabinet with corner with a lazy susan. It was the best for spices

When my mother went to a senior living arrangement, I would not permit her to use the “over the stove”microwave because the heated product was too hot to bring down to the counter. I have always questioned why on earth would kitchen designers place microwaves over the range…just asking for terrible accidents.

This! Exactly! As a 5'00" tall person, I loathe over-the-range microwaves and say a prayer each time I have to get something hot out of one of them. The best ones I have seen are the ones built in right over the oven in the wall or next to the sink in the island. My last house, we caught the construction right before they put that in and said STOP, NO. We had a vent hood installed instead that they didn't want to do the extra work so luckily it was on an outside wall so we made the hole ourselves. We bought a cheaper armoire cabinet, put in the breakfast nook area and that is where the microwave stayed (plus frees up more cabinet space for other stuff so blender, toaster, etc can go in there also). I can't stand homes that don't vent to the outside. I am sorry but we actually cook (obviously a rare thing nowadays) and I don't want to smell that food lingering in my house all night. It need to sucked outside.

On watching this video I got a big smile. My wife and I had thought about the issues on many of the things you talked about. We mentioned our objections and our alternate ideas to our kitchen designer. They were pleased that we had anticipated the issues and had put so much thought into our project even prior to our initial planning meeting. Growing up we had a kitchen desk. Used it all the time, but we had a land line and file drawers. Super handy - back then! If I had the real estate in my kitchen, I'd love to have a small fold down secretary - type of cabinet. Chargers, keys, note paper, mail. Similar idea, but updated and smaller.

If I had a large enough kitchen I’d like a desk - maybe hidden behind doors so it looks like a pantry or something when not in use? - with bookshelves for my cookbooks to have a meal and menu planning space. But not for anything else, people using it as a general home office in my house would leave it buried in papers and with no pens or scissors to be found in no time flat.

Loved my former kitchen desk in my bigger island kitchen. It was at the end of the kitchen with same granite counters. My husband keeps putting his laptop and papers on our breakfast table now because he can see the TV and it drives me crazy. Rather have him use a kitchen desk with a file cabinet under it.

I’m designing in a small desk area in my new kitchen. Had one in my previous kitchen, and it was wonderful to have a designated area for pen holder, stapler, tape, chargers, notepads,etc. All the clutter in one spot, to leave the rest of the kitchen clutter-free.

I agree that deep pan drawers are good. Saves your back and shortens your reach compared to a cupboard. So useful that I bought another pan drawer to store baking trays, muffin tins, cake cooling racks etc, "filed" in a row front to back using dividers - they fit so neatly it's as if the drawer was designed for them. I'm constantly writing out recipes that are riffs on classics, or anything that I came up with on the fly and am trying to jot down on the fly, so for me, a desk makes sense. And by desk I mean a hard surface to write on with space to store all of my recipe notebooks. To that end, I can build a pullout surface from a pantry cabinet for the writing portion, and use a bit of the cabinet space to store my notebooks and pens. A two-fer, if you like.

I like the hanging pots for ones I use every day-ish. They don't get dusty. Mine hang under my upper cupboard, right next to the stove. I used to find it frustrating to pick out the right pot out of a pile in a drawer, esp. when I'm in a hurry making supper. I put the tops in a drawer nearby.

I do the same. I have hanging storage for the pots and pans I use super frequently and open shelving for stuff like canisters of tea bags and the like that also gets used pretty much every day. If it’s staying in one spot long enough to get dusty, it doesn’t get to stay on the pot rack or open shelving. Dishes definitely do not go on the open shelving.

You just brought back the memory of the 1963 house we bought. It had a corner unit with a lazy susan fitting, Even though it had at least 1/2" lip all around the edge, despite that, one can of Something had escaped into the back. Man! Great video, thanks for the tips. As a 6' 2" male, I would like to make the counter (ha, pun not intended) argument that the hanging pot rack is wonderfully convenient. Pots, due to their size, have to go below the counter. That is a lot of bending, opening, and searching for the pot you might be looking for. Now, esthetically, you should probably stick with all copper cookware (and not the cheap crap that I have) if you are going to go that route, but man I have really come to appreciate my hanging pot rack.

So practical. A few thoughts: Best use of a lazy susan discovered by a little boy - step stool to get on counter. Microwave should be counter high to avoid burns or just eliminated as most foods don't take much longer to reheat on stove or in oven.

I have a Lazy Susan in a bottom corner cabinet that I had installed long ago when I redid the kitchen. If I had it to do over again, I definitely would do it again. It is ridiculous not to do a corner without one. It is impossible for something an fall off a Lazy Susan and get lost because Lazy Susans are built inside of a 270 degree cylinder. Mine has a bottom and one shelf. I stack pans, frying pans, and lids in it and all I need to do is rotate it. It holds a ton, and everything is easy to get at. They also look great with the 90 degree oak cathedral door. Stuff lost forever happens only when you DON'T have a Lazy Susan because you would have to empty the shelf and lay down with a flashlight to see what is back in there, and after you retrieve it, something else will take it's place back there. That's why people have been installing them for the past 50 years to this day. I have no idea why anyone would want to do the dividers you are talking about on a Lazy Susan because they simply eat space and make things harder to pick out. On my upper cupboard I have a corner cabinet without a Lazy Susan. There, I expect to store stuff deep like extra sugar, extra this and that because I can see it and reach it. On the lower straight cabinets, I have pull-outs on them so stuff cannot hide. Over-the-range microwave is perfect. It saves TONS of space, and mine vents right out the side of the house. The microwave is even with the bottom of the wall cabinets and there is room for cabinets above it. There are also no walls to clean above it as is the case with a just a hood with space on each side. I would do that even if I had space to burn. It also provides a timer. The microwave gets used far more than the stove because it is far faster for warm-ups, coffee, and easier to clean. On the counter is is just takes up space, and is an eyesore.

I would add that IF you have a couple pots and pans that you use every single day or every other day, hanging pot storage might be useful. But you have to be honest with yourself, and whether or not you actually use them that often. I have a cast iron pan I literally use every day, so I’m thinking of adding one hook to the wall somewhere to store that pan, as it weighs a ton, and lifting in and out of a drawer or cupboard isn’t ideal.

Our last kitchen had a small footprint. When we replaced our Melamine cabinets we added an OTR microwave. My husband cut a hole in the concrete wall to vent it outside. It worked great. That house is in Florida we now live on the west coast.

Hey Mark! Very cool to hear what you like and don't. For me, since I write bakes using metric, an area to write on is important. But I haven't yet put a desk in the kitchen. I did have one, once outside the kitchen and that was helpful. With the reno that I'm doing now I don't think I'll have a desk but I will have a place to write. If that makes sense. I'm with you on the corner cupboards. Hate those things. Don't fancy the plate/glass holder. But I do love me some open shelves. For me, I dislike upper cupboards very much. Love lowers though. I actually like my plate rack and 4-point hanging pot rack and strongly resist buying additional plastic gadgets or trendy single-use appliances that require storage. I put my microwave on the counter in the mudroom next to the pantry. Perfect place. My range hood vents up through a cabinet and soffit and outside. Agree about the kitchen desk; it's a waste of space.

Love an opn vertical plate rack. Mind you its convent, having and using frequently - a variety of what are plates, not just dinner plates. Wish I had one for trays. I have also a hanging pot rack, best solution right after using the cathedral ceiling space more efficently. It's on a list. 😝 I do very much like not having to dig out the right pan or pot - and seem to despise having to put away, bury it again, back into the stack.

@@MTKDofficial Yeah, a new innovation would be great. I've just been focusing lately on Every. Single. Thing. that gets accumulated on our countertop and where I can relocate such things so they have a place in my kitchen design. Stuff like mail, rogue vegetables and fruit, and those blasted paper towels. The idea I'm leaning towards is one I saw where you pull out your (full height) trash drawer and inside at the top is a separate "box" that holds the paper towels. My husband wasn't keen on the idea as he goes through a lot of paper towels, but it's about the best thing I've found so far. There's one where they mount them inside an upper cabinet and the towels come out through a slot on the underside of the cabinet, but that would take up some valuable real estate in an upper cabinet so I'm not crazy about that. I'm planning on hanging a towel from my trash drawer, so it might encourage him to just dry his hands on the towel instead of using so many paper towels. I don't know of too much else out there, idea-wise.

I agree with you about the plate rake, however I love my lazy susan corner cabinets I have three in my kitchen one for sm appliances, one for pans, an one is my pantry. It has a lip on it and nothing falls. Also my microwave is vented out the roof, it works great and doesn't take up counter space.

Apparently many have assumed plates are only for holding food, but some people take delight in simply looking at plates. That is why they often have designs and beautiful colors and why plate racks and other methods of display were invented. Plate collecting goes back at least four generations in my family so I'm thinking there's some weird gene involved. I'm staring happily at a plate rack right now. Hopefully those who lack the pretty plate gene can find equal joy stacking plain white plates in a plastic rack stuck in a cupboard. Happiness to all!

My parents dealt with the corner cabinet by having a shelf only in about the back foot of it and leaving the rest open and storing tall items like the stand mixer and large stock pot in there. It's a great space for storing gear you rarely use but still need. Oh and my add to the list would be the stupid motorized retractable down draft vents behind the island range. It's a fussy and complicated way to have a island range/stove for someone who isn't actually an enthusiastic cook. Give me a real range hood any day of the week, and YES put it over the island!

I've always wondered if those down draft systems could really pull air as well as they say? I've designed for them before but have never had one.

I was with you on the corner cabinet commentary. I have one in my kitchen. It's way too deep to reach the back. I don't want to do a lazy susan but haven't found a solution yet- I need that space for storage. I just get on my hands and knees and go into the cave, literally with a flashlight to get stuff. Where you lost me was on the over range microwave. I have a small-medium sized kitchen and I remodeled in late Spring 2021. I swear I found salvation in the newest slimline microwave from Whirlpool. The 1.1 cu. ft. Low Profile Microwave Hood Combo didn't just free up counter space, it really was a lifestyle upgrade compared to the countertop microwave I had before. I smile every time I use it. It claims a max 400 CFM, but for our needs, it does the trick. It's got 4 speeds and a timer function. I swear, I'm in love. So though you may disagree, I praise God for my new (admittedly rather pricey) best friend in the kitchen.🙌🏾🤓❤

I store oils, large spice containers, vases etc on my lazy susan. I haven’t lost any yet. The upper corner cabinet is much harder to deal with. The top shelf holds pans that are infrequently used. I like the look of not having the upper cabinet but not sure how to design around losing the lazy susan.

My lazy Susan is super functional. It has a round wall around it and easy to access. Hubby put a door on the other side of that cabinet and there is room to to stand the oblong pans and a big countertop appliance back there. My over the stove microwave has a vent hood that vents to the outside and works well. The occasional problem for me is that when I’m canning or using a very tall soup pot, I could use a little more space above it. But love my microwave over the stove, it’s a great space saver and we planned ahead for the venting.

I designed and remodeled my parents kitchen, my father had replaced the range hood with a microwave. I removed it on the design and placed it under the stove top. My reasoning was they are in there 70s and the potential for spilling something very hot from 5 feet up could cause major injuries to the elderly. At the base cabinet easier to reach.

how about appliances with cabinet doors on them? As a cabinet maker I get calls all the time to fix those stupid things. Good cabinets should last decades, while even expensive appliances only last a few years. Kitchens should be designed with standard size factory finished appliances, so when they break down (which they will) they can just be swapped out.

If you do a lot of skillet cooking, hanging skillet rack is essential. Those cast iron and carbon steel skillets and wok are hot immediately after cleaning. Just hang em up. Similar argument for colanders. You are constantly using them in prep area and they are wet when you rinse them off. A hanging rack over a sink is perfect. No use of space in your drying area, just hang em up wet.

My grandmother actually used her built-in kitchen desk (it was in the breakfast room right next to the kitchen) and it was always very tidy;-)) The house was built in 1950 and the kitchen was original at her death 40 years later. I would make it table height at 30" off the floor. This seats a regular chair and probably will give you the most options. However, I personally like the Island height option and think it creates a more functional island overall. Hopefully, you will have some options to compare when the time comes. @@MTKDofficial Depends on the kitchen design - I’ve seen a lot where the corner pantry breaks up the workspace/work triangle because you have that big width of the door right in the middle of everything. It’d be much better to have cabinets there and extended counter space in those designs. They can be nice when they’re at the END of a work triangle so you’re not having to go back and forth past it when you are working but it’s right there when you need it.

My kitchen is small, with limited counter space and a narrow galley aisle, and all the shuffles of the appliances and cabinets in the world can't move the load-bearing walls or exterior walls. My plan includes a countertop convection toaster oven/air fryer for small tasks, a single baked potato or a TV dinner, or such, but there are jobs that nothing but a microwave can accomplish, and a microwave drawer or under-the counter mount would compromise storage space for frequently-used cookware. I keep coming back to an over-the-cooktop microwave hooked to the ducts I have in place for the existing vent hood. Would an additional ceiling vent (maybe a bathroom-type vent with down-lighting) mounted in front of the cabinets above the cooktop be a suitable compromise?

I absolutely do not agree with you about the over-the-range microwave. When you have a big enough kitchen to be able to accommodate a microwave on the counter, that's one thing, but many people do not, myself included. I solve the problem by watching what I'm doing when I'm cooking. If I don't burn stuff I don't need the darn vent and its corresponding waste of usable space. If I should burn a piece of toast, open windows for a few minutes and the ceiling fan handle things very well and much more quietly than a range hood.

Hey! Thanks so much for watching and letting me know! I really appreciate it. I think the term has turned into something generic. I've seen those table tops called lazy Susans too. The same concept is used in corner base cabinets (and corner wall cabinets) to allow for easy access of stuff way in the back. The idea is good, but the execution has left something to be desired. Some people love them though. Google corner lazy susan and they should pop up.

I have a microwave over my stove top and the vent is awesome. Yes, I could recirculate the air, but it is vented to the outside and I wouldn't give up my over the stove microwave for anything! I have an upper and a lower corner cabinet with lazy susans and I wouldn't trade them for anything! My lower lazy susan holds all of my pots and pans and I can count on one hand how many times anything has fallen off the lazy susan. Lids go in the drawer under the oven but I was able to greately reduce how many lids I needed when I bought a set of silicone lids that take up a fraction of the room and are much more versatile. My upper lazy susan holds all of my spices and was vastly more useful when I finally organized things into bins that fit neatly on the lazy susan.

@@MTKDofficial Thank you. I will tell you one thing I wish kitchen designers should encourage people to do. I have two 15" lower cabinets. In my opinion, that size lower cabinet shouldn't even be sold without rolling shelves, lol. My kitchen is 37 years old and that is the only thing I would change if I felt the need to replace my cabinets. I know I can get aftermarket rolling shelves, I just haven't done it yet. I realized those cabinets were going to be a problem the day I moved in, just haven't gotten around to fixing them, lol.

I have very limited space and my 24" oven is built in and way too small. I removed my vent hood and got a microwave/convection oven vent hood. Mine does vent out the roof. It came with two options. Vent to room or vent through roof. Best decision ever!! I did set it a little lower than code. I also have a small counter microwave for everyday use.

The new home that I got from the builder has two ovens on top of each other and the micro wave is set above them. I can't reach the microwave without a step stool. I am 5'3".. The builder says it can't be changed. I just heard you mention some guidelines on microwave that says it can't be above 54". What guideline is that?

The NKBA standard #21 talks about microwave placement being no more than 54" from the floor and its placement shouldn't be finalized without the consideration of the homeowner. This is impossible for a builder in a lot of cases, as they might not know the eventual end user. However, placing it that high is not ideal in any case. It doesn't sound like they are willing to accommodate you, which is unfortunate. Hope that helps!

I am just 5'2" and I requested the builders to bring the microwave down quoting the NKBA guidelines. They are silent. I have a very small kitchen that I am currently working on. It is an L layout (the corner is a wall that has a bathroom sink on the opposite side) and is a total of 8' x 5' I don't have anywhere to put a microwave other than over the range. The 5ft wall is also the only part of my kitchen to have an exterior wall and will host the range.

Yours is a case, where you may not have an option, especially if having a microwave is essential. Otherwise I'd say nix it altogether and go with a vent hood. But you have to make the space work for you. That's the main thing.

I want a small plate rack in my kitchen, but NOT like the style you showed. I want one like a platter display rack that I can store my most used antique dishes that have a pretty pattern on the plate. I want to be able to SEE the plate pattern. Although your suggestion for a high CFM range hood is good for exhausting high BTU cooking appliances, you neglected to mention that when the hood is rated to exhaust more than 390 CFM that a “make up air” source is required by code. Especially when the building is well sealed as most modern day construction is. And that the make up air will initially be “unconditioned” since it must be sourced from somewhere outdoors; that implies that in many cases conditioning of the make up air becomes necessary. And thus supplying make up air can become complicated.

Congratulations. Every single one of these things are GREAT space savers and have NOTHING wrong with them, with one exception - the microwave over the STOVE - always stupid cause no vent. But microwave hung under a cabinet? That's fantastic! Corner cabinets with properly hung lazy susans inside are also great space savers. I love how for several of these you try to SELL something LOL Sheesh. Look, I've got a SEWING machine in my kitchen - along with a place to do crafts. I'm single, have a big kitchen but not that much room overall in my apartment, so my kitchen table gets to work double time. DEAL!!!! A kitchen desk? GREAT idea! I would love it if you would do a kitchen for a wheelchair/mobility issues. The problem I am having is how do you put in enough storage if things have to be "pull under" but pulling along side and reaching cross body is killing my back. Hi Kristy. That is a great idea and one I have been thinking about. I have designed quite a few accessible kitchens in my career. I was fortunate to work with a homeowner once who really helped me create a kitchen that was functional for him. It was high customized to suit his needs and a real eye opener.

They’re not cheap but there are upper cabinets inserts that can be installed that basically have the shelves you’d have in upper cabinets, but in a unit that you can pull down and they sort of fold out and down to counter height or a bit lower. Like as they come down they also come out away from the wall a bit? I’ve seen closet rods that do a similar thing, in case you’ve seen that before. So your upper cabinet exterior is basically just a decorative shell around the unit that moves up and down. For base cabinets - I have back problems so while I don’t currently use a wheelchair bending and reaching is often difficult for me - look into drawers and if drawers aren’t possible then slide-out shelves. There’s a number of systems now designed to be fitted into existing cabinets and you do lose a little space in the cabinet (like an inch all round and underneath the slide out unit?) but it makes the space much more usable since you can pull things out to where you can reach them more easily. I’m waiting for someone to design one that both pulls out and pops up so the bottom slide when pulled out lifts up to the height of a middle shelf or higher in a standard base cabinet so you don’t have to bend as much. Also look at appliance lifts if you have anything particularly heavy - they do eat up cabinet space but depending on your needs may still be helpful as they prevent needing to get something heavy out of the bottom cabinet then lift it to the counter to use it. (Just be aware I have seen complaints on some that they’re not stable enough with something like a mixer going all out, so you’ll want to read reviews carefully to make sure the one you get is robust enough and stable enough for your purposes.) My current kitchen issue? The dishwasher. We do not have the space to give up to elevate it so the bottom rack is a better height, so basically I can only load or unload the top rack. :(

@@TrappedinSLC My biggest issue in the kitchen is I am lax to change my cabinets because they are solid wood backs, sides, fronts and shelves. My house was literally all custom made. Luckily almost all of the bottoms are huge drawers. The upper cabinets are also lower than standard because the previous owner and builder's wife was a tiny lady. So the first shelf is reachable for me as I am/was 6ft tall. The countertops are also short because of this, it used to kill my back to use them when I was still walking. I have old coke bottle crates I use as pull outs for my 2 bottom cabinets that aren't drawers. I am thinking of gutting the under sink cabinet so I can pull up under it but I have no idea where to put the stuff under there or how it would work and still look normal. This year at some point we are going to replace the countertops because they are all tile and falling apart so I am going to do concrete (I think) because I need a surface I can slide heavy pans around from the stove to sink but ideas on a counter surface that can stand hot pans being slid around on would be really helpful. It's really dangerous to move hot liquid on your lap.

My friend showed me a cabinet that's popular in Europe. It goes over the sink, has no bottom and has a metal wire plate rack in the cabinet, so you wash the dishes in the sink and put them in the rack to drain. Close the door when done and the plates drain into the sink. It saves counter space with no drainboard next to the sink.

Yeah, someone sent me a picture of that type as well. Seems like a good use of that type of cabinet. My only concern would be the water that runs off the rack onto the cabinet sides and creates a mold issue. But that seem to be popular in places, so maybe they have that figured out too.

Putting pots in a deep drawer? No. You have to dig for the size you want. The bottoms of the pots will mar the bottom of the drawer. Every time you have to put a pot away, you have to stop, slow down, and take care not to ding, scratch or mar the cabinet. I hang my pots on a spring-loaded pole with arms.

On plate racks I was afraid I was going to disagree with one of my favourite kitchen advice KZbinrs, as my hubby (formerly a joiner) has custom-made a plate-rack for each of my 3 kitchens. I love them as I use all the plates not the ones that are on top of a pile. But then I realised that the plate racks you (rightly) criticised seem to be the ones with a solid base under the plates which are low down and hard to reach to clean. Hubby's design had/have the base some distance UNDER the rack for plates, so far down in fact that it's a shelf I can put saucers or cups on, and as such it's easy-peasy to access and clean. Indeed, properly built plate racks shouldn't need a solid base shelf underneath them. The latest design is a drawer-front height lower down, because he bought a drawer front that matched the kitchen cabinets (same range/model) in a sale, and uses it as a lift-up door secured by ?magnets - you push it in and it stops being flush with the cabinet so you can open it, then close it by pushing it in. Hubby made the first two plate racks in wood but the latest one uses fibreglass rods, as wood erodes (my second was in use for 25 years and the erosion became very clear!). Tip: if custom-building your own plate rack, measure each plate and if necessary assign it its own slot, as plates differ within a set, even a millimetre makes a difference. The first plate rack also had hooks for mugs and a shelf for saucers, and it sold the house - throughout conveyancing we had 3 requests to confirm the plate rack would be left.

I have NEVER had something fall off my lazy Susan. Don’t store top heavy things there. Although I was planning on an OTR microwave, because of my age, height and preference for gas cooking, I’m rethinking it, not because of the ventilation aspect. I currently don’t have ANY ventilation in my kitchen (other than opening a window) and although most people I know do have range hoods (probably because of code when the home was built or kitchen remodeled) I don’t know ANYONE who actually uses their range hood, unless it’s really hot and they don’t have central air conditioning! 🤷🏼‍♀️ So even though an OTR isn’t high powered, if it was used it would be better than nothing.

I herd it explained this way, dangerous people hang things. Yup, it stuck with me. I don't like knives on magnets either. Now a nice plant, yes, plants, like a pothos, naturally climb and hang. Not so for pots and sharp weapons, I mean tools, the knives. Put them in a lined drawer please. Plates on edge could be seen the same way. I don't see the point in the plate holder, just stack them on a shelf.

My sister had a kitchen desk in her old house. They kept the family computer there, where she could keep an eye on her then-young children while they used the internet. They're teens and twenty-something now. They live in a different house and probably look at whatever internet they want on their smartphones.

I've always wondered why these lazy susans were not installed with blocks in the 3 corners of the cabinet that are curved to match the contour of the lazy susan itself. That eliminates the open space so nothing can fall off. I also wish they would change the name. I know several Susans and none of them are lazy 😉

I've been thinking in putting an over the range microwave and use ducts to take out the moisture, because I have a really small kitchen, but after listening this, I don't know what to do.

As long as it is vented outside, it's fine. Especially if it is a small space and you have no other options. All good!
