I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate every minute of these outings. As a child I dreamed of owning my own plane. As a young adult I started the process with a few classes, exams, medical checkup, a few hours of flight time and then life got in the way. I am glad someone got to make use of my childhood dream and if you don't mind, I'll just stick to a wing and fly along. Thank you so much for sharing these calming moments and amazing views :-) :-)

An approach technique shared by one of my instructors years ago was to fly the pattern trimmed and at speed for landing. For example, in a C-152 setting flaps, trim and airspeed for 60 and fly the pattern in that configuration lightens the workload for configuration changes in each leg of the pattern. At that point, you're focused on the approach and not managing configuration changes. This became my preferred configuration for flying the pattern whenever possible. Good landings or bad landings, it's always a pleasure to fly with you. God bless!

Regarding your choice of frequency.. I would tend to do the reverse of what you did. Transmit on 122.9 by default, and monitor 126.7. The Toronto VTA chart (and I think possibly the CFS as well) shows a border of where the CTAF frequencies should be used. I tend to broadcast my position every 5-10 minutes, especially in the Lake Scugog area, but if I know someone else is out there, even more so until I can see them. Great video though! I learned to fly at Lindsay so it's fun to see other people's experiences there.

Thanks again for bringing us along. As a young man in the Army I routinely "jumped out of a perfectly good aircraft" my landings at times weren't textbook "parachute landing falls" or pretty but I walked away from them all. Honestly Glen, I just don’t see what was that wrong with those landings. If it’s because of the cameras then just turn them off, find a small strip somewhere and just do touch and go’s all weekend. Get 30-40 landings in. You need to develop your muscle memory. Once you have that the distractions won’t matter.

If you walked away from it, it wasn't that bad of a landing. Something to learn from. You're still learning. We're always hardest on ourselves, after all. Every landing will be different because you can't control the conditions everywhere you go, and that's the nature of flight (some might say it makes it more exciting, more of a challenge!). Thanks for sharing the good, the bad, and the... not-so-bad!

I got checked out on my little taildragger this summer. I had wheel takeoffs pegged and felt confident with that part but was still nervous of the landing phase.. I hammered out almost two hours of circuits by myself one evening at a quiet little airport where i live and can grease it on 9 out of ten times now. Trim, speed control and power adjustment to keep the intended landing spot on the runway fixed in the windshield.

My landings improved vastly when I started to adjust trim for airspeed in every phase of the pattern. In the 172R trainer, that was 10° flaps and slowing down as low as ~80 kts after I passed abeam the threshold in the downwind leg, then putting in 20° flaps and trimming for ~70 kts turning base, then trimming for 60-65 kts on final and landing with 20° flaps. Aim for the numbers, round out and flare, increase back pressure and try to hold it off as long as possible.

Yeah - my problem with this plane had been all of the modifications done to the wing: 3 feet of extensions, STOL cuff, VGs, etc. The POH landing speed of 65 - 75 MPH (57 - 65 Knots) is way too fast causing the wing to carry too much lift. I needed to completely dump 25+/- years of Cessna 172 knowledge and become a test pilot to figure out what actually works with this setup. This thing flies like no other 172 I've ever flown.

It's those light crosswinds...we tend to get complacent when the wind is below 10 kts. I had an instructor that challenged every control input I made (or didn't) on several light wind days, and it largely fixed my floaters. Not all of them mind you, but when someone else is on-board I really zero in on what the wind is doing to nail centerline landings and the first third of the runway without either a hard arrival or a long bouncy float...when I'm alone I still lean towards complacency 🙄

Hey Glen, longtime fan of your content and fellow video producer. For what it's worth, I recently purchased the Insta360 camera with the one inch sensors, and it's the first 360 camera that I think is usable in terms of having a "professional" image quality, and may be a good fit for cockpit or potentially even wing footage. I also bought the GoPro Hero 11 and am liking it so far, but find myself reaching for the Insta360 and DJI Pocket 2 more.
@GlensHangar2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip - I've been testing the Hero11, slightly better firmware than the Hero10 so the 11 is a little less glitchy. I have an Osmo Action 3 on order, and I'm going to try the Hero11 mini when it releases as well. I'll probably do a comparison video when I get them all here. I really want the GoPro Hero11 to work, if it proves to be less glitchy with fewer (maybe even zero) random shutdowns / freezes / etc it would be the go to camera for this series. I really like how I can jam timecode across multiple GoPros and synch them all in post with sound recorded externally on a Tentacle that is also providing the timecode. If the Osmo Action 3 had that timecode functionality it would probably be a better camera right out of the box, even though the picture quality is slightly lower.

I'm not a pilot so both landings looked good to me. What's the difference between a Fly Out and a Fly In?
@bartofilms2 жыл бұрын
Hey Glen, Is there a difference between a "fly out' and a 'fly in'? Maybe a fly out is meant fo be a quick meet & greet + lunch where a fly in is a larger event? That last landing wasn't bad. ADA and minor / gusty crosswinds remind you that you are a Pilot in command of a plane in 3D! Along with some more practice, have you done any of the Dan Gryder 'DMMS' calculations or training? He's kinda Gruff at times, I.K. Cheers.

Thanks for sharing. While your first landing was ok and your corrections worked, the speed looked a bit fast. Have you considered an additional analog airspeed and/or AoA display, perhaps on the glarshield? I find that glancing at a needle, or some other quick indicator, is easier to read quickly and ensure I'm at the correct approach speed, rather than trying to read a number off a relatively small speed tape on a digital display.

I was 65 over the fence which is on the lower side of the range - I could drag it in over the numbers at 40, but for a standard landing there's no reason for that. I really was overthinking landing with an audience, and then startled by the person running around at the end of the runway.

It doesn't add much to the landing distance, but can correct several 'oops' when landing! And... don't forget to close your Fight Plan. =) Happy Flying!!
