No, you're not experiencing deja vu, this was up earlier, but someone pointed out that I'd mixed up Declan's name in a few instances (my fault at the scripting stage, I'd somehow put 'Duncan' at several points) and went back to correct them. Alas that means the comments from the earlier version are now lost, so if you want to repost your comments, you're welcome to do so. Apologies again!

Very true, Ireland use to be a Catholic Texas but now its as irreligious as Canada England Czechslovakia ect. You dont even have religious provinces in a secular society like you do in Holland and Scandinavia. Chances are if you meet a religious person in Ireland under 60 they are either a Jew Pole or African.

17:57 Especially in a country where people recently voted in favor of equal marriage rights. Would have been a fun scene to have that lady be visited by a same sex couple and she would have been completely okay just insisting they sleep separately until married. Would have been little different and interesting mix of liberal and conservative values.

I don't get why these romcoms has to be repetitive on 90's slap-slap-kiss relationship. A boy and girl first met hate each other for no reason. Years later they suddenly love each other. I thought anime has the worst Tsunderes...

Strangely, it might all be a callback to Shakespeare, for I think he might have created the first "romcom" when he wrote the play "Much Ado About Nothing". Not saying most romcoms are on the same level as Shakespeare, but I more than willing to bet that's where that overused "slap-slap-kiss" formula actually comes from.

...and definitely give up the successful high paying career you've worked so hard to establish for a subsistence living in the middle of nowhere. It's actually on of the weird things about Hollywood. In real life, they'll pretty much insult anyone who doesn't live in or near a major urban area, but in movies say that everyone should move out of cities into the country. Of course they still insult the natives in the movies too, so maybe not so weird.

Definitely a film not forgotten here in Ireland, with so many geographical errors and backward twee presentation. So glad you displayed all the location errors on a map, especially since you would think that location filming would have given the filmmakers a bit of sense, the Irish would (and indeed do) hate this choice to have random shots with no connection. I am pretty sure one of our Irish Times reviewers did claim it to be a cultural insult at the time funny enough.

Someone on IMDB claims that this is a remake of the 1945 film I Know Where I'm Going. Too many differences: the woman's already engaged to be married to her rather-older boss on a Scots island, and gets stuck on another island by weather and meets an impoverished laird. Also it's by all accounts a fine film...

This movie doesn't even know how cows work. I went to a farm this past December that contained several fields/pens of cows, and I had hoped to get close enough to pet them. Nope. Unless they are already familiar with you, a cow won't let you get close enough to pet them. In fact, they will actively back away on sight. So there shouldn't have been an issue with the main character needing so shoo away cows in the road-- they would've taken off on their own the minute they saw her coming toward them.
@MediumRareOpinions6 жыл бұрын
While generally timid you do get some that just ignore your presence even getting close up. There's a group of cows used for land management on a route I take for work, they were all stood on the road one time and I had to get right up close to them before they decided moving aside would be a good idea. Though these were a totally different breed of cow that are allowed to freely roam within a fenced area of woodland where people often walk dogs, rather than dairy farm cows, maybe they behave differently?

The reason their short trip across Ireland took several days is because since our country is so damn big, when Americans think about cross-country road trips, we time our journeys in terms of days, not hours. Here's another reason you're not being pedantic: If a film is set in the U.S., and is said to be taking place in New York City, only us annoying New Yorkers will get annoyed when you suddenly travel from the Village (singles and teen streets) to Harlem (100's to 130 or so) in 10 minutes. So if they town-hopped nearby villages in Ireland and there was rage, that might be overdoing it. However, if you clearly state your film is in NYC and the character travels 100km (approx. 62 miles), you could suddenly be in Princeton NJ. Geography matters!

Matt should review "The Boy Next Door" next. It's tailor-made for this show.

Amy Adams saved this disappointing movie from being a complete turd but... It isn't good. As excited as a movie filmed in Ireland normally makes me, this didnt.

Nice review, Matthew. Somehow the plot also reminds me of the great movie "It Happened One Night", where also two people who don't like each other pretend to be a married couple. I have been in Ireland a few years ago, also in some of the real places, incorrectly portrayed in the movie. It's a wonderful country. So why do they need to add some cheap and stupid stereotypical clichees into this unfunny and prodictable movie? And why do so many movies have such stupid and too-simple-minded love connections? I don't get it. I remember seing a German musical movie from 2013 where a woman marries a guy she barely knew after 2 days from a place called "Salzkammergut" in Austria. But it was based on a classic play from the 1900s where there were only references to marriage and it was playing on the positive way of creating a world where everything like that is possible and different than in the real world, in that case Berlin, Germany. And the movie adaptation looked like a parody on cheesy "Schlager"-movies. This supposed to be a fantasy world. But here??? No.

Its the same plot as I Know Where I'm Going too a 40s Powell and Pressburger movie which is set in Highland Scotland. Except that's a good movie.
