Summary: Royal descendants feel the wrath of the curse of condemned witch Mad Dolly, who spews forth her prophecy while she is burned at the stake. The victims suffer death by having their heads removed in various fashions, getting their limbs caught in animal traps, knife wounds, and other methods of medieval torture.

I notice that this film was made in 1978, a year after Suspiria was released. There seems to be a lot of similarity in lighting, death scenes and a story about witches too between both films. Was this supposed to be the British Suspiria?

Having spent my teenage years watching such films in the 70's (mostly in New York City's Time Square), I can say that your assessment of excessive gore, and lack of logic masquerading as "artsy" is spot on.

About 40 years or so I read through 2 or 300 pages of a novel that kept making rude comments about novels, only to end with "it was all a dream". I felt pretty cheated. Did this film feel the same way?

"2 Actresses, 2 Filmmakers, A Pervert, and A Policeman" is my new favorite thing. This was a Great Review! All I remember about this movie is that Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) plays the mechanic, and I was rather surprised that I recognized him. Making-Of Film? I kind of hate to give it attention because I truly hate it, but "Destroyer" (1988) features Anthony Perkins (who is better than this) as a director filming a horror movie in an abandoned prison as his crew is knocked off one by one by a resurrected killer (Lyle Alzado). It's garbage.

Even assuming that the witch. Is targeting the studio people for making the film, it does not explain why the punter was killed. It seemed almost that the curse sought to protect or avenge the molested actress. It still looks like a guilty pleasure sort of fun film.

Another greetings from the great state of... Well, you know where. Another great review from Dark Corners. For a possible follow up about movies that are about movies, Brian DePalma's "Body Double" from 1984 might fit the bill. I mean the "hero" is an actor who is starring in a vampire movie, and it's got a scene of a porno being shot inside the movie, which also doubles as a music video for Frankie goes to Hollywood and the song "Relax". It's kind of a hat trick as far as films about making films. Anyway, I love watching your reviews and then watching the actual movie. I end up usually having the same opinion as you. Keep it up!

Basically, Norman J Warren and producer Les Young were influenced by SUSPIRIA; it didn't matter if it didn't make sense, as long as it delivered the goods! And as for why many of the supporting cast get bumped off seemingly at random? Well, if they didn't then We wouldn't have a Film!

"Rubber" (2010) might fall into the category of a horror film about making horror films. Certainly, an audience gathers to watch a "film," which plays out in real/reel life. "Rubber" is generally considered a pretty good film. It's certainly unusual.

@@andrewyoung2796 it does. Punter has several meanings. Generic term for customers or clients. Generally meaning the average one or ones not too bright. But not always. For example a cheap spectacle or gimmick might be aimed at “ bringing the punters in”. But in your definition a punt is a bet so a punter is a gambler. Generally confined to horse racing.

Have you heard of Happy Birthday To Me? It's an eighties Canadian slasher about what else, teens getting killed various ways. One boy goes the way of Isadore Duncan while working on his motorcycle, another gets his throat crushed while doing a bench press, then there is the guy who gets a shish-ka-bob shoved in his throat, and the doctor who gets killed with a fireplace poker. The final scene is a little unsettling with all of the victims propped up at the table for a morbid birthday party. Might want to check it out sometime.

People complain about bad plots, but if there is no real plot, then no one can complain. Good Lord, You are a genius! Here is some money to make the film. The killer in "a movie being made" film should have been a lowly set assistant who gives his evil villain speech at the end of the carnage: "It was my film and my idea, and they stole my film. So I had to kill them all. Now I, the true genius will make the film. Sure my last film involving a time traveling pedophile in a police phone booth ran into problems, but people can't appreciate true genius." At which point an unsecured halberd falls and splits his head in two.

Horror films about horror film making? I've heard that Wes Craven's New nightmare is decent- never watched any of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies myself, more of a Jason fan. Scream 3 is alright in my book as well. Heh, if we extend our definition to artistic horror, does The Disaster Artist count? As to the movie itself, it doesn't look TOO awful from what little you showed- badly written/plotted perhaps, but the scary imagery here and there isn't that bad. It's not quite Suspiria, but... hey, maybe that's it? The makers saw Suspiria and thought they could whip up a gory movie about a witch killing people themselves and just really half-assed it?

A great horror film about making a film is Wes Craven's New Nightmare. A bad one is Frankenstein 1970, which features Boris Karloff in his final film related to anything Frankenstein. I think it would be good for a future review.

This movie looks like it was inspired by that mock film studio of MIRACLE PICTURES (if it's a good picture it's a miracle) featured in that spoof of the schlock film industry : Hollywood Boulevard, from the 1970's
@RavenHouseMystery
@RavenHouseMystery 6 жыл бұрын
Clearly this film must have been inspired by Dario Argento. Whenever I think of a film-within-a-film, I usually recall "Anguish (1987)" which begins with one story for twenty minutes, only to reveal it is only a film being shown in a theater where one of the patrons is a psychopath. Other films with this gimmick include "Blow Out (1981)", "Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000)" and "Berberian Sound Studio (2012)".
@TheJohno95
@TheJohno95 6 жыл бұрын
Anguish is pretty cool! A very underrated Horror flick. This one seemed like Dario Argento huffed ten lines of Coke, decided the rest of his oeuvre had too much of a plot, and just said: "Let the blood flow!" I'm a huge Argento fan, by the way. Some of the scenes remind me of Tenebre....I wonder if Argento shot them an homage since they obviously borrowed from Deep Red with the window scene?

In my quest to watch all of the section 3 video nasties, I had the “pleasure” of watching this one fairly recently. It has effective moments but you’re right in saying that it’s crippled by its own incoherence. It also feels very muddled, like it wants to be a gritty Brit horror one minute and then a lavish Italian suspiria-esque film the next. I thought it was entertaining enough but it’s frustratingly messy and very badly thought out. The admittedly cliche story does have potential, it’s just a shame they couldn’t be arsed putting the effort in, otherwise this relatively average and forgettable movie could actually have been pretty good. Great review as always :)
