I grew up in the church and in my teen years rejected the faith but miss, deeply, the songs, hymns, and singing. I have always thought that Bad Religion has made a number of songs that feel exactly like those hymns I grew up with (just with the humanist message instead of the religious ideals).

This is my favorite Bad Religion song. The Mad Caddies actually do an interesting cover of this if you want to do a versus thing.

I love this song. And the Interrupters version lol I consume almost everything on KZbin at 1.5 speed and had never heard the acoustic version and was really digging it i realized I had it sped up lol but normal speed is great too. Good job on the lyrical analysis, you guys enjoy any 🌿🍃 before? lol

Great reaction! Loved how you did the two versions of the song. I could be wrong but I was under the impression that the "prideful father and his son" lyric was a nod to President Bush Sr. and President Bush Jr.,, the Iraq War, and Bush Sr and Jr's quest to kill Saddam Hussein, but I think it was really about the story of Job from the Bible.

This album was a rebirth of bad religion. Brett coming back and Brooks joining, this album completely blew me away, especially after the few albums we got before this.

The beginning of the song refers to the story of Job - "Just to settle a bet that could not be won between a prideful father and his son." There are all these ideas of what will make the world better - soldiers laying weapons down, leaders relinquishing their power, the return of the messiah - if Job was "upright and strong" in God's sight yet had his life destroyed so thoroughly just to prove he'd remain faithful, what hope do we really have that the same God actually has our best interests in mind?

Probably the most popular bad religion song out there. Fucking loved singing this on Rock Band! Not my favourite on Process of Belief but it's lyrically beautiful. I'll always rate all BR 8+ so therefore, neither of you get a brain cell. Side note....Brooks as drummer is fucking top notch 🤘 It also has the lyric I want tattooed....'When the only true messiah rescues us from ourselves '

I hated this song the first time I heard it. Though lt they had finally “sold out”. It’s now one of my favorites, especially when they play it live.
