Bad "Summer Nights" from GREASE REACTION

Today, I'm checking out a high school's "Grease" Summer Nights. Having just played this in Florida, I'm familiar with it. Some voices and performances are okay, but the band and lighting need work. Overall, it’s an okay attempt for high school.

The ending sounded like alley cats screeching. Seth Rudetsky points out that the last thing you hear is how the audience judges a number. I thought Sandy had some talent, but her singing needed a good talking to from the director. That Danny was probably the producer’s nephew. (Do high school musicals have producers?) The staging was nice, that punch was a clever way to deal with a lyric that wouldn’t be very popular now. Best part, and done well. But those spotlights. So bad.

Not only were the spotlights a bad idea, but imo they had waaaay too many ensemble members on stage to really focus on what's happening. Like isn't "Summer Nights" supposed to be just Danny and Sandy's friends? They should've stuck to two separate ensembles like my high school did for certain plays: one ensemble for the minor parts and one ensemble for the crowd scenes.

Amazingworldofholly I dunno either, but Grease the play is different from Grease the movie in a lot of ways, and it seems like high school versions tend to follow the movie's direction rather than the play's. I would be ok with extra ensembles here if the other classmates were just dancing and were in a different section of the stage from the main cast. Having them all be right on top of each other just makes it hard to tell what the main cast is doing.

Don’t even get me started on multiple ensembles - I recently assistant directed our school production of Legally Blonde and we had three ensembles (bearing in mind this is an all female cast - which could be considered another issue) and scheduling rehearsals was a NIGHTMARE

This is why NO HIGH SCHOOL should do Grease!!! EVER! It just ends up being soap suds! Also the 1973 book is much better than the movie! Grease in its purest form! This school production needed at least 10 more rehearsals

Theatre Geek the only school I’ve seen do it right is my high school. The kids there only get in if they have a passion for theatre. The blocking was great and we had a lot of rehearsals to practice it.

I remember when my high school did this. The theatre teacher, who was also the director, put himself into the show as the teacher. Our theater troop really felt that was a ego move on behalf of the teacher himself. After a semi-protest, he was replaced by a much better theater teacher the following month and we did Almost, Maine with her.

I remember for my production the cast was not allowed to sing because there were singers. Like it wasn't bad but sandy and Danny were the only characters singing during summer nights. So all the questions were sung my chorus. They harmonized sounds like a drag which made it sound like a compliment rather than an insult xD
