Today, we're watching a video submitted by Karlie Emory of her high school performing "One Day More" at the Freddy Awards in Eastern PA. I love the enthusiasm, but the audience is completely terrible and are too bombastic! These students worked hard, and we want to hear them sing, so save the cheering for the end. Audience etiquette has gotten way out of hand in recent years!

Hey Kevin! My name is Ryan Murphy, and I was the Marius in this performance. I appreciate the criticism, and know I definitely have some work to do on my upper-register vowels among other things. It was a high-pressure night, very loud, and I didn’t sing too well but it was still such a blast to be a part of. Celebrating the arts at a high school level is so so important!! Since I’m here, I’d just like to let you know that, as many performers have, I’ve seen a bunch of your videos and love your work on KZbin! Thanks so much for your critique!!

We used to take theatre trips in high school and got given a very strict run down of theatre etiquette. Nothing annoys me more than going to the theatre and having some pain in the ass person scream, sing along, take pictures, say lines before the actors, or for the love of God stand up and clap along mid-show. I paid a few hundred dollars to see a professional production. Sit down, be quiet, clap at the appropriate times, and let everyone enjoy it.

@@KevinLynchNJ I once sat through Wicked with the person in front of me literally quoting Glinda for every single line. Turned out that she'd seen the show 6 times because Fiyero was being played by a former Australian Idol contestant. Just behave appropriately for the theatre people and have respect for the actors too! Theatres are designed to carry their voices out, but it also funnels you're right back into them. Some seats run at nearly $300 a ticket, times that by at least 2, plus parking, maybe even a new outfit or dinner out, and you could easily spend $1000 for 2.5hrs of entertainment. Worth it to me, but if you ruin that by being a pain in the butt I'm allowed to swat you in the face with my program!

I'm from the UK and I'm starting to see shit like this happening on the west end/tour so much more now with the big shows like Hamilton, Heathers, BOM, Waitress that we've had transfer recently and I'm sure DEH will be the same when it opens. It's such a shame since uk theatre etiquette used to be so good but we're losing it all with the arrival of the big Broadway shows since bway audiences are way more vocal than the uk so it kinda carries over with the shows.

Guitar Chick It’s not just the teens either. When I went to see Waitress in Toronto recently, latecomers who looked to be in their forties or fifties arrived after the first song, and our whole row had to get up to let the four of them in. That in itself would’ve been fine, but one of the guys started crinkling wrappers, SLOWLY unwrapping some candies. Then he opens a fucking red bull, and the pop/fizzing sound it made was so distracting! After intermission, they arrive just as the lights go down, and so the rest of us had to get up again. They were still talking as the scene was starting, so I nudged one of them passive-aggressively on the arm, and that seemed to do it. Not to mention the multiple other latecomers who had to be taken down the rows during the show. I’m pretty sure I even saw a person go down and sit in their front row seat DURING THE FINAL SONG.

Frozen on Broadway was the worst theater experience I've ever had. There was a group of goths to my right going "Yass queen!" and "Hit it gurl!" every couple minutes and a family behind me (whose kids were kicking me and my friend's seats and singing every song and reciting every line with the actors on stage at the same time.) I held in my burning anger, but my friend didn't. He went "shhhh!" to the kids and their parents snapped, cussed, and threatened us (we are teenagers btw). The cursing and threatening went on for the rest of the 1st act and we had to inform the usher so they wouldn't threaten us anymore. They finally got kicked out at the end of the 2nd act and that was the loudest that I clapped during the show. Frozen was a mediocre show imo but it's super disrespectful to the actors onstage, the technicians who did a fabulous job (the tech was amazing), and especially the other audience members who paid top dollar for a Broadway show. I have no tolerance for these "concert singalong" people. Shut the hell up. If you want to sing, sing at a singalong or karaoke bar or something. Dont ruin one of my favorite art forms. Ted Talk over. Mic drop.

Matthew Mattocks how can you sing at home it’s hardly the same singing along to KZbin on a phone as singing along to a full cast singing with surround sound.audience pays,cast get paid,I don’t see why people should pay to be told they can’t enjoy themselves.cinemas do sing along nights so theatres could do it too but they just want to take people’s money and don’t care if people can’t enjoy it because they are too busy concentrating on not daring to sing along while enjoying something. while it’s not the same,if I’m doing karaoke and someone wants to join in they get told off but I always encourage it by passing them the mic,people wanting to sing along shows they are enjoying it and even as a very tone deaf karaoke singer that’s a good thing.overpaid broadway stars should be happy people are having fun for their often 100+ per ticket
@akduva
@akduva 4 жыл бұрын
@@ryanredmond87 Its not that people cant enjoy themselves, it's the entitlement that some people think that their "enjoyment" (ie. singing, screaming, kicking seats) is more important than the enjoyment of others and drawing peoples focus from the story. It also draws focus from the actors onstage doing their job and really frustrates other people who are trying to watch. There are some shows with lots of audience interaction, and I'm not saying that you shouldn't have fun at shows, that's why people to to theater, to have fun. But dont let your fun ruin other people's experiences, especially when they pay top dollar.

I’m literally a minute into this video but I’m already compelled to tell this story. so last year’s fall play at my school was a stage adaptation of fahrenheit 451 (written by ray bradbury himself). at my school, the sophomores read that book in class, so we had an in-school performance for the entire grade. and boy was it one of the worst experiences of my life. they were so loud and obnoxious I literally would stand offstage apologizing to my scene partners because it was so disrupting. they went absolutely wild about the abortion comment that montag makes and would yell things like “go ian!!” or “JOSIAH”. we had a q&a afterwards and it was apparent that a good portion of them didn’t pay attention. I don’t think any of them realized how damaging that could be to someone’s self esteem. I loved that show, would probably rank it number one out of every show I’ve ever done, but that specific performance was a nightmare.
@poohbearny
@poohbearny 4 жыл бұрын
AMEN about the yelling. OMG now days a character comes on stage and WOOHOO the crowd goes nuts. I can understand on Broadway if its their last night performing then of course everyone does goes nuts esp if they hit notes that usually are not done. But geesh you pay big moola to see a show and a song will start or either end and you cant hear them singing even if they are wearing a mic. I think they should put a etiquette page in all programs and have them read it as well during the announcements when a show starts. Great vid otherwise.

We're celebrating high school theater and the accomplishments of our wonderfully talented friends, not there to watch shows. The audiences are always very respectful during the actual performances throughout the year at schools. So hell yeah, everyone should be cheering loudly at the awards! There is SO much love and support in the crowd. When you're there in person, you really understand that energy. (I also can't believe it's been NINE years since I won mine holy crap I'm old lol)

I was at the Les Miserables staged concert in London a few weeks back, the people in front were swaying side to side, kissing each other, talking to each other, leaning forward and blocking my view, putting their heads on each others shoulders, completely unable to keep still. One even checked their texts during the performance.Also typically in the UK there there even more traditional etiquette rules . Luckily most people behaved, I was unfortunate to be seated behind those people. Plus we were near the front of the dress circle, considered the best seats in the house and there are people who won't appreciating where they were. There are people in terrible seats that would do anything for the seats those annoying people were in. But at least most of the audience waited to clap until they finished singing and stand at the end of one day more and the epilogue (the suitable places)

So a guy in my High School Production of Music Man invited his hockey buddies to see the show, and as soon as Harold and Marion kissed, there was an uproar from their section. We were just like, will you just shut the fuck up!

The only times I’ve ever cheered in a theater before the end was when Jailen Josie hit that insane high note in spongebob. That’s it.

This reminds me of when I went to see Beetlejuice and any time a character entered or hit a slightly high note the audience would scream for two minutes

It's an interesting problem at the start there. Generally in musical theatre I would agree that people should shut the hell up and listen, ideally in absolute silence and without moving a muscle, but also one of my favourite things in the world is a Wicked cast change show (in the UK at least) where people do cheer loudly mid-song, or partway through the long final words of certain songs, and the cast do stray from what's written a little, and are expecting the response. I feel sorry for the people who just happened to book tickets for that night without knowing, but also I will fight anyone who tries to take my cast change performances away from me. 😆 Mostly, normal performances are well behaved, although since COVID, both Glinda and Elphaba get small cheers when they first appear where they didn't before.

i saw mamma mia at my highschool and the lady next to me kept singing along with the songs and was also making fun of a disabled man in the audience. i wanted to smack her over the head so bad.

I saw Book of Mormon here in Denver when it started its tour. I lucked out getting a single ticket, so I was super excited, even if it was in the balcony. Right next to me were these two high school girls who were doing their own little dances and singing along with the show. I was distracted the whole time, I was so mad. Just sit there, let the paid actors do their thing, and you sit there and watch them.

I saw Kinky Boots on Broadway, and the audience pissed me tf off. Brenden Urie was playing Charlie, and the audience seemed to be under the impression that they were at a concert, complete with their phones' flashlights waving in the air. They screamed every time Charlie opened his mouth, entered, or left. It was almost unbearable.

I don’t get it. People pay a lot to see these people perform and it’s ruined by other audience members! I would’ve been so mad.

@@KevinLynchNJ I was pissed. Dont get me wrong, im a fan of Panic at the Disco and I've seen them in concert. But the worst part was how the ushers seemed to be used to it with how quick they were, and how strict they were.

This was me when I went to see the final performance of Les Mis at the Queens Theatre in London a few weeks back. Performances were incredible but the final notes of One Day More were drowned out by the audience screaming and applauding prematurely and I couldn’t help but cringe when people clapped along to Beggars at the Feast 😬

One of the WORST (and I mean WORST) audience experiences I’ve EVER had in theater was when I went to go see Cats… you know the big moment in Memory reprise, everyone does… PEOPLE WERE CLAPPING AND CHEERING OVER HER! I WAS SO LIVID! I WANT TO BE AMERCED IN THIS NUMBER AND YA’LL RUINED IT!!! She tried to belt over the crowd to but then they just got louder and just my god… this is a professional theater experience, ya’ll should know better! It just made me so upset because that’s one of my favorite moments and the first time I saw it live I had it ruined just because people couldn’t wait until the end of the song. Sorry I’m just really mad about it still lol.
