i think what happened to Lilly is that she was really funny/good with her specific catered audience and she thought it would work with everyone else and when it didn't she kind of retaliated instead of being like "well my specific catered audience loves me and that's good enough", which a lot of creators failed to do. if you branch out and fuck up it's not the end of the world as long as you didn't derail your entire following in the fall

This isn't about the video, but I just wanted to say real quick. I've really enjoyed watching Pinley's transformation from a faceless cardboard box, to fully injecting himself into the branding and content. The videos, imo, are much better now that he is on camera, and makes longer, more in depth videos. I think it was really the right move career wise to make this shift, scary as I'm sure it was. Sidenote: holy christ are his thumbnails good now. Idk if he makes them or has someone do it for him, but ever since the change, they are fan friggin tastic.

I don't remember what comedian said it, but they basically said that when you do comedy everyone wants to know if you can do other things, like act. Which he said was akin to asking a chef if they can farm. I think it's the same with youtubers. Felt that film school comment. Didn't get accepted and went to a technical school for media studies. yess can vibe with this - i went to film school but i wasn't very good at making social connections so i had slim pickings of work for the year after i graduated, before everyone just...stopped talking to me or anything. ironically i do videography now because i was working in the horse racing industry and casually mentioned to my boss i went to film school, so now i do social media and owner/client updates and sales work. still get a bit sad sometimes when i see people from film school working together on series and feature films, wish i could be part of that!

@@SkiddlyBink I just graduated from film school and understand your situation. I had so little connection there but for my thesis, I decided to make it by myself with the help of my friends who didn't go to film school. On the screening day, I made some friends with other film students and my professors told me that my film had potential to send to film festivals. I'm working at an animation company right now and still working on my thesis film in my free time. What I'm trying to say is It's nice to have connection but it's possible to make a movie by yourself. You can send it to film festivals and there will be more opportunities waiting for you out there. It's hard but possible.

I'm from a family of several teachers, and teach kids age 5-12, and wanted to leave some feedback about the Guava Juice show from an educator's POV! The content overall isn't educational, but based on humor style, I doubt this was a show intended for an early childhood demographic, which tend to be the more educational shows - I don't have a good reference for shows outside of the US, because the only early education content I watched when young was PBS, but this would be shows like Sesame Street, Zaboomafoo/Wild Kratts, Berenstein Bears, or Octonauts. These kind of shows are generally aimed towards children under 6-7, and while I'm sure Roi does have viewership in that ages, his content in generall skews more towards late elementary to early middle school - the focus on gross-out humor is a huge hit for a lot of kids that age(stuff like the pee - it would just be potty humor to them). The Dora skit in particular is a good example of this - it is a rebellious feeling way for kids to make fun of younger kids shows as they grow older and get embarassed by what they used to like. You can see a similar phenomenon in kid's changing songs from kids shows, like if you've ever heard kids change the Barney 'I Love you, You Love Me' song to include hatred instead and killing Barney. It's pretty common at that age, especially with a lot of young boys! Another good sign of the age demographic here is the language used - villains make threats to the child characters, and words like 'butt' and 'fart' are used, whereas a younger show would be likely to substitute 'bum/bottom' and 'toot' or exclude the language entirely. For the older demographic this humor skews to, I honestly think it ends up doing pretty well from what you've shown. The pepper stuff might seem like an allusion to drugs, but to be honest, that kind of humor is pretty common for kids shows, because kids replicate adult behaviors - children will pretend to be inebriated off of mundane substances like milk. It's just a play-pretend thing for them! I think this show is helped a lot by it's additional writing staff - Roi himself is actually only credited as a writer on 4 episodes, including the pilot you watched, and I'm going to guess that his involvement is what gave the show the 'lol random XD' element in that episode. There's a pretty fine line between 2010s random humor and the actual humor kids enjoy, which is silliness - and the primary factor for what kids find silly is expectation subversion! I think that Roi might just not be able to easily discern the difference, because he doesn't work directly with kids, while the team behind the show is all decently experienced in kids animation. They've got a LOT more experience! The creators of the show actually previously worked on a Canadian animated show called Wishfart, which has a pretty similar set-up. It has a similar silly hijinks energy, and also stars a male protagonist, with a male nonhuman and female human slightly-lesser protagonists beside him as the other co-stars. The director also has a extensive credit list, including some pretty big names like Slugterra, Stormhawks, and the TV tie-in show for Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs (also all aimed towards older kids). I will say that something to note about kids content is how easily children can replicate the onscreen behaviors. It's standard broadcasting practice for children's networks not to include any dangerous behavior that children can easily replicate - so shooting yourself from a cannon or using a laser gun would be okay, but stuff like not wearing a bike helmet or not wearing a seatbelt is a hard no-go. Eating ghost peppers is an example of something that I /could/ see on a syndicated show, but it also feels a little bit dangerous, as most children could actually be injured if they tried that, and it is possible for them to do, especially being presented as a fun adventure. I might be being oversensitive on this, though - I do work with 5-6 year olds as well, so I might be biased on the safety thing! Overall, this actually seems like a pretty good kids show! The content is innoffensive, and from what I've seen on parent review sites, it generally stays very appropriate, with specific episodes including messages like people acting out because they're hurt, trying new things, and teamwork to problem-solve instead of finding blame. These are great messages for older kids, and based on the style of storytelling, it seems to be done in a way that won't feel condescending to kids - if you make it too obvious, a lot of kids will feel like they're being treated as babies and not want to listen. Lack of fight scenes means parents don't have to worry about replicatable violence (and promotes talking problems out instead of fighting), and the main two characters are both POC, which many kids wouldn't be able to see elsewhere! I also think it's fantastic that the Jenny is shown as being as chaotic and fearless as Roi - I know a lot of parents who would be really happy that their kids, especially daughters, have a female peer role model in the show like that. I hope this is some helpful insight!

Just wanted to drop in and say that this was really interesting and insightful! Good to know that it isn't young kids that's consuming this content, but moreso the older children who would be into all this grossout humour. Not too different from my own young enjoyment of courage the cowardly dog!

it seems to me that the "liza on demand" show is just a bleak copy of "unbreakable kimmy schmidt". kimmy did a bunch of jobs for "taskrabbit" and that made for short gags while showing kimmy navigating a whole new world and driving the over hanging story forward. i have not watched liza's show, so my comparison may not be accurate, but every clip of the show that i have seen, both in this video and before, has just given me the feeling of "i've seen this before, and it was done better then", the show doesn't seem to bring anything new to the table and doesn't give me, someone from outside liza's regular audience, a reason to continue watching. now is it an unfair comparison putting a youtube premium series against a netflix series created by tina fey and robert carlock? sure. but the similarities shouldn't be overlooked just because they originated from different backgrounds. if someone has seen liza's show or know more about it, feel free to correct me. but this is my impression as someone who has seen one of the shows but not the other.

The song that played during Lilly Singh's Mask skit actually seem to amplify how much of a trainwreck the whole thing was. The cartoon aesthetic the skit was trying to replicate doesn't really work without the exagerrated cartoonish cgi the movie had. Even if the movie's cgi is quite old compared to today's standards, it was part of its charm.

The writing and humour is definitely for kids but I actually love the Guava Juice cartoon art style!! There’s so many little fun things in the background like pictures on the wall and items on the shop shelves that only show up for a few seconds. So much effort has obviously been put into those small things which might not seem like a big deal but a lot of animation today tries to get away without doing it for monetary reasons (eg. The new Addams Family films) and end up just… looking boring. Even if you don’t find it funny, at least this carton looks great and actually fun! So you're traveling around? It also seems like you've been sick so I hope you're feeling better! It's always fascinating to watch reviewers talk about all these creators I've never even heard of until people like you review them or they get into giant drama lol. Usually I have a good tolerence for gross out humor but those Guava Juice clips you played made me feel gross lol. Ironic that his cartoon series is the most tolerable and decent out of all the other KZbinr shows, the animation seems to be above average quality and the art style is kinda cute, hopefully it improves over time.

I honestly think Lily could've done something similar to that of Carol Burnett in terms of interacting with the audience. She seems like the type of person that'd be fun to interact with and it would give her show a much cozier feel.

This reminds me of that Mitch Hedberg bit about comedians getting jobs in acting/screenwriting. It's like walking up to a chef and saying, "great food, can you farm?" Like, it's cool for youtubers to want to try other fields out, and some of them do great, but it IS kind of weird that we consider it a natural progression between very different skillsets.

I think it makes more sense than tiktokers becoming singers and actors though. They don't even seem too passionate about what they're doing, it just seems like "well, I want to do something, so maybe I should sing??" But they can't really sing..

If I was locked in a room without my phone or laptop, and I had to pick one of these four shows to watch to pass the time, I'd probably pick the Guava Juice cartoon. Maybe it's my bias for cartoons and animated media, but that was the only one that looked even remotely entertaining. It's colorful, the animation is pretty good, and the voice acting was solid. Again, I love cartoons and animated media because that's a part of my inner child that I refuse to let go, so maybe I'm slightly biased, but I honestly don't think I could watch any of the other ones for more than 10 minutes max.
