Thanks for the video! I used to use the foil method but I found it was just a waste of money. I just use it as is and leave it for the next cook. When I am preheating the smoker for the next cook I remove the grates and then I let it go for about 10 minutes. I just then go out and scrap the junk from the last cook off the heat deflector and toss it in the trash. I then throw the grates back on and let it continue preheating. Just seems to be less of a hassle for me.

Helpful video...My tip...After foiling the drip pan, lay 3 or 4 sheets of foil on top of the newly foiled drip pan. Just lay them on top, don't shape them or manipulate them. After a few cooks just lift off one of the top sheets of foil and you have a clean surface. Do this until you reach the original sheet or until smoker is ready for another complete cleaning.

Recteq recommends not to pickup the ashes cuz it will act as a natural insulation. They recommend removing the ashes once it gets to the burner level but no to take all of it, only to maintain the burner area free of ashes.

Real Lemon lemon juice works great to remove grease, soot, etc. Just spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes, and then hit it with a green scrub pad. No chemicals to worry about, and no rinsing or burnoff. Just wipe it with some paper towels after scrubbing.

I have had my RT680 for 7 years and I am impressed with the performance and also the tec people at the company. The only thing that I could recommend is make sure the auger tube is clean of pellets. I live in Florida with a lot of humidity and last weekend I had a problem where the shear pin broke because the pellets had gotten wet and caked up inside the tube. It took about 3 hours to get the auger out and clean it. I would recommend if you live in a humid environment make sure the tube is clear.
@BadBeastBarbecue5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, good advice, I use my smokers so much cooking for friends and folks at work that the pellets never sit in the hopper long enough to get wet, even in the winter months....LOL I love Rec Tec products also, great customer service and their smokers are built like a tank. Thanks for watching.

@bobrowe32736 жыл бұрын
The rectecs are designed so that the heat/smoke come up from the front and back side of the drip pan. When you put foil over the top edge it restricts that air flow. I do add foil to my 680 but stop at the top of the pan. I do what was done here but fold the edge of the foil back to the inside. Don't have any way to measure the difference but I believe that the Rec Tec people will tell you the same thing. I totally agree with the rest of the cleaning other than I take the time to clean the glass cover over the light. Other than those two little things good job.
@BadBeastBarbecue6 жыл бұрын
That's a great point about the foil, I will have to check that out, I did forget to take the light cover off, it needs a good cleaning as well, thanks for checking out the video.

@HoundDogCatia4 жыл бұрын
Bradley Davis, yes I had that issue as well at first. What I do know though is lower the temp to like 225 first, and I keep the lid open. Once it hits that, then I shut it down.

@@BadBeastBarbecue Does this comment really go with this video? You mention several times that you need to scrape off loose paint and it appears that the paint has peeled away around the hot box. My point is the grill looks like it has been used way more than twice. Also why is there so much rust on it? Great video, the footage alone was very informative on the build quality, I was just about to order one, its loaded in the cart as I watched this but will hold off for now. I had a Traeger that the electronics failed on just after a months use. Replaced with a Pit Boss but the paint on it peeled and melted away around the hot box just after first use. I had high hopes for the Rectec but if this is what it looks like just after 2 uses, its not worth the money in my opinion. Pit Boss claims its normal for the paint to peel away around the hot box because of the high temps in that area, if that's true then why paint the area in the first place. The Traeger was used more than a dozen times and hit did not show any signs of peeling or rusting however the electronics were crap.

I need to take the time to clean my pellet smoker but I can’t imagine using degreaser on the interior parts without adding a film of cooking oil. Not unlike seasoning a cast iron pan I think you are just inviting rust. That said, I can’t argue with you that your smoker looks showroom ready. Thanks for taking the time to share this! Scott
@BadBeastBarbecue6 жыл бұрын
Believe me when I tell you that the small amount of degreaser does not remove a lot of the seasoning build up. It really just gets the loose stuff. The smoker is well seasoned. The one thing I usually do is run the smoker again after cleaning, besides I don't clean it like this every time, just after a large cook or after many cooks, a build up of grease can cause an unexpected fire, seen that happen.....

I do the same but I don't use degreaser. To be quite honest I sweep it out, wipe any grease up with paper towels and replace the foil. The grill grates I wash in hot soapy water (my hot water runs off Satan's backside) and are rinsed thoroughly. I just don't want to spray any kind of chemicals in the pit at all.
@BadBeastBarbecue6 жыл бұрын
I do that after every couple of cooks. I change the foil out for each cook depending on how bad it is. I only use the degreaser for that once in a blue moon cleaning when the build up is bad. Then burn the smoker again at 400 degrees

Do you ever worry about introducing chemicals into your smoker? Even after the burn off I would think it would leave traces of some of the chemical behind.
@BadBeastBarbecue6 жыл бұрын
Not really, I usually do a burn off at 400 degrees or higher for over an hour and it usually does the trick. Keep in mind that I don't clean it like this ever time, This is a once a season cleaning or when the grime and grease has built up too much afer a massive cook. After the smoker cools off from the burn off, I sometimes take a clean wet towel and wipe down the inside ot the lid and any other areas we may have used any cleaner. Thanks for watching.

haha degreaser inside a grill that's a new one - I would never use chemicals - if you clean your grill while its hot you don't have to use any chemicals - never use foil either - hot grease scraps right off and you keep all the seasoning and again NO CHEMICALS
@BadBeastBarbecue4 жыл бұрын
Good points, but I only do this type of cleaning once every blue moon and I burn my smoker out at high temp after that type of cleaning just like with the initial burn when it's new to remove any oil and residue left from the manufacture. I like the foil, makes it easy to clean up. But everyone does it different. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
