Ngl when I first watched the movie I went that way, but on further rewatches I also found it to be a metaphor about abuse - Te Fiti, the mother island literally created everything, and people still went and "stole"/broke her heart. This betrayal caused her to warp to a destructive form of herself. Te Ka isnt screaming in rage - to me its pain, the on going pain from the abuse they suffered and the desperation to recover/heal. The final song helps with that "This is not who you are".

Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but the grandma went downhill very fast because she gave Moana the heart of tafiti. The heart can create life itself and since the grandmother wore it around her neck for so long, it kept her healthy and strong. Once she gave it away, her health and age caught up to her.

Yeah, I loved that part of the movie, too. Gramma Tala didn't press Moana into going back to the mission because "the ocean chose her", that she had to continue because it's her responsibility and all that jazz, unlike other animation movies do. She let Moana decide for herself, and for me this is what sets this movie apart from other films with the same premise (the protagonist having this huge responsibility about being a "savior" of some kind).

Moana is a mix of many Oceanic cultures (Polyneaisa, Micronesia, and Melanesia) but mostly Samoan. Moana, for example, means ocean in Hawaiian, but the village style and how they dress is mostly Samoan. Their canoe style can be seen on many islands. They did a great job respectfully telling a new story while showing a little about our cultures. Maui is a legend throughout the islands as a Master island finder, maybe a real person or a myth, when Oceanians were populating the islands of the Pacific. They said he could pull islands from the ocean with his hook. The hook is symbolic and important to Hawaiians as it's how you fish, symbolizing good fortune and abundance.
@heysulfuric23725 ай бұрын
From the maori side, one version I was told said Maui was actually thought to be a stillbirth, so he was wrapped in his mothers hair and given a sea burial. Then he floats off and is protected by sea creatures as he was delivered to guardians who raised him. Ive always wondered if our poly cousins had similar origin stories, this movie has an interesting interpretation of this. Another version said the hook was shaped from the jawbone of his supernatural grandmother, who willingly gave it up to him. That weapon he uses to literally beat and cripple the sun, slowing its passage, and to fish up our homeland, nz.
@pjm24135 ай бұрын
the film also covers a lot of things from the Maori culture aswell, considering Maui is a legend from Maori Mythology and the Maori haka is performed little by little by him throughout the film. Also, Moana means ocean in Maori too and Heihei meaning chicken etc 🤣 The film definitely includes a lot of different cultures, but I’d say Samoan and Maori the most! :)

The story of Tefiti can be read as a metaphor for trauma (particularly sa) when someones heart/innocence is taken without permission. She became hardened and cruel, as the lava monster, she was trying to protect what was left of herself by lashing out and attacking, which is so common for victims. The song that Moana sings to her is so beautiful and pertinent, it broke me when I first saw this and actually helped to get me started on my own journey of healing from childhood Traumas.

In that moment when the hero has lost all hope, someone is generally there to say, “Oh, it’s awful what’s happening to you, but if you fail your loved ones will die, everyone will be disappointed in you, and the world will burn. Is that okay with you? If it is, maybe you aren’t who I thought you were. If you’re the good, strong person I think you are, let’s go.”

In Aotearoa New Zealand, the variation of the Maui myth that I grew up with was that Maui was born early and quiet, his mother believed him to be still born and cast him into the ocean in her grief. He was saved by Tangaroa, the Atua (God/guardian of the sea). He does find his mother, and he also has brothers. They don't like him too much though due to him being favoured by the Atua, (he's also a bit of a thorn in the side for the Atua too lol)

The filmmakers really did their homework and I could see that they took bits and pieces from all the different cultures in the south pacific. Weather it was the clothing, dance, names, myths and legends, little gestures.etc, I know all PIs could relate to something in this film. Love it 🌊

I absolutely understand the pull of venturing outside of the birthplace (hell, I've lived in 6-7 different places in the past 10 years). But I also really like the idea of the chieftain stone pile. Receiving and accepting the responsibility of raising a place higher one layer, one generation at a time is a really cool thing in and of itself. All in all, both is extremely valid as long as you stay true to yourself.

Aaaw! I watched this all the time when I lived alone a few years ago while going to college. I was happier back then. Im glad you guys are watching this!

This movie was special to me. This was my daughter’s favorite movie as a toddler we have sang those songs sooo many times. I loved all the messages as an adult too. The Oak pointing out that sometimes when you look strongest no one ask you if your ok. Thank you guys for the amazing reaction and insight

In Tahitian, "motu" means "island" and "nui" means "new". While different, all the Polynesian languages are closely related, from Maori in New Zealand all the way to Hawaii. For example, "hare", "hale", and "fale" all mean house, in different languages. (There'll be a quiz on this next week).

There have been 62 movies made by Disney starting with Snow White back in 1937. I have enjoyed all of them in some way excepting one. Moana... is awesome.

You have to tell us which one is the exception!

@@ellav7812 Dinosaur. If you don't know it, that's because it was retroactively shoehorned into the official canon to make sure Tangled was the 50th movie.

Moana....I've seen, it seems, a million times. When it first came out, it was THE movie for my girls to see, over and over. And, yes, they sang along with every song. Even though I have seen it said number of times, of course I watched it again with you guys.❤ I was sure you'd love it, too! ***Talks of a live action Moana remake to come, too.

Thank you guys for reacting to Moana! This movie meant so much to me being a POC, having representation and education of these cultures being brought to the big screen 😊 Not sure what you guys have next in terms of Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks animated-type movies, but I’d love for y’all to react to 1998’s Mulan! That movie was a staple of my childhood and my first introduction to a badass female character. Personally, I love how although in the beginning she struggles with finding herself and figuring out her purpose, she ultimately sets out on an epic journey that ends with her making a mark on her country and showing what females can accomplish when given the opportunity. 👏🏽 It features an insanely talented voice cast - speaking AND singing - including Eddie Murphy, which I know you guys LOVED from the Shrek series. It also has the legendary George Takei, James Hong, Ming Na-Wen, BD Wong, Donny Osmond, and Lea Salonga (fun fact: who was also the singing voice of princess Jasmine in Aladdin). It has great lessons (which I know the Oak will appreciate), hilarious knee-slap type humor that still stands today, catchy songs you can’t help but dance along to, and overall an incredible storyline stemming from Chinese culture that will not only educate but amaze and entertain. Please check it out if you guys have the time; if so, I hope you’ll enjoy it just as much as I do! Thanks again for the great reactions and content, you make some slow work days much easier each time you upload a new one! Keep up the great work! 😁 - You friend from California, Brittany

This is one of the best movies about identity. I joke often about doing a marathon of The Departed, then The Lighthouse, then Moana for a light-hearted palate cleanser after that heavy middle lol. Truly a brilliant, wise, important film. Some of my best friends are in recovery and absolutely adore the lessons this teaches. My favorite moment is when Maui tells himself (his tattoo) "I love you". Him finally loving himself marks his turning point and it's SO AMAZIIINNNGGGG! 😁 So glad you guys finally saw this!
@ItsAsparageese5 ай бұрын
Oh also: The tattoo is not only himself, but specifically his highest/best self, which makes it even better. And I love how one of Moana's first actions after meeting him is to knock down his giant statue as she escapes the cave, which I interpret as a foreshadow of his ego death that precedes his rebirth. There's a ton of incredible psychology symbolism all throughout the film, and I notice more and more with every rewatch.

Hey Oak I understand the feeling. I immediately noticed how hard that scene hit you... Ive lost my father and two brothers, sadist thing Ive ever seen was a Marine handing my mom a folded American Flag. We've all seen it in the movies, but it F**ks with you hard in real life pretty bad. Great reaction guys! Much love and respect🙏 🌹For your dad Oak🌹

??? Don't know about a sequel? They have been promoting it for the last few months. It was actually green lit last year sometime. Release date in November of this year, the main cast came back to voice Moana 2.

We had a cat named Bernard. He was exactly like Hei Hei. A little neurologically impaired and roomba’d around. We said goodbye to him about a month before taking our kids to see this movie in theatres, the second the chicken was introduced, my husband and I looked at each other and burst out laughing, and I cried a little. Every time I see this movie, I think of Bernard and it makes me smile.

The scene where Moana has the "lava monster" come to her through the parted water is my favorite animated scene of all time. Just beautiful.

You know I get the dad being protective about her and the sea since he lost his friend that way...... But at the same time, they named her Moana which means ocean so technically they had it coming... 🤣

one thing not many people notice is that when the plants on the Island are growing at the end, one of the flowers shown is the Sun drop flower from Tangled. It is theorized that when Maui lassoed the sun, that is when the drop fell from the sun.

Y'all kind of remind me of Blind Wave, except I imagine those guys spend a lot of their spare time playing video games and I kind of picture y'all spending your spare time being lumberjacks or something. Anyway, Moana is one of my favorite Disney Princesses so I loved this commentary! Also, idk if someone commented on this earlier, but it's one of the first Disney movies that Lin-Manuel Miranda (of Hamilton) did the music for. I think he has some kind of multi-project deal with them.

Fun fact - The songs are written by Lin Manuel Miranda and you can actually hear him sing the English part in We Know The Way 😁❤️

So I just had a thought. Does anyone think that the Heart of Te Fiti was sustaining the Grandma's life? She basically got sick as soon as she gave it to Moana.

This is easily one of Disney's best movies. Everything about this movie is incredible. Especially the music. Gives me chills every single time. I actually believe the theory that she dies early on and thats why shes able to travel to the underworld.
