There's something about singing with no instrumental that always hits 100x harder for me, so the ending was perfect for their message. And the way the ending is worded, this isn't their story, this is telling the story that has been told to them, repeating it louder for those who don't have a platform like they do.

The “once you leave a headstone, you never really make it home” is about soldiers who have killed in war carry the weight of taking a life with them forever and never forget the life they took. Nightmares PTSD and being forgotten about once they do come home, government tells them to go kill the enemy and then abandon them and their health especially the mental and emotional toll they carry with them.

Woah, I feel like this song is also fitting for WW II. This pretty much describes what my father's uncle went through in WW II. He was enlisted when he was just 17 or 18 and trained to be a fighter pilot. He had to drop bombs on villages and cities. Whenever he came home he'd be devastated and say he couldn't do it anymore. He'd always see dead bodies flying through the air. So one day he dropped his bombs on a forest, not on a village. Someone reported him and he was sentenced to participate in something that was practically a suicide mission. In short, he paid his humanity with his life. Shot in the back he managed to land his machine but died in the hospital. Thinking about all the people who ever had or have to feel this way makes me choke up.

@Dwane Browning: Only thing is, you never give Badflower credit for telling us the TRUTH about our war machine and its motives. It has nothing whatsoever to do with 'national security' and 'freedom' here at home...it's truly because our government does, and always has, loved 'War' - don't believe it? @@Vaxels “we satisfy a rich man’s greed” “the treatment for my shell shock, they don’t even pay for it.” The entire basis is that governments send the poor to die for them in war to make money. That’s the entire point of the song. This isn’t just about the Vietnam war, this is about every war. War is one of the biggest money makers there is… why do you think we’ve invaded Iraq and several other Middle Eastern countries. And I don’t think you know what Socialism is, because it has worked nearly every time. You just don’t think it’s worked because the CIA assassinates socialist leaders and replaces them with puppet capitalist/fascist leaders so socialist countries don’t nationalize their resources. Look at every Central American country, look at Libya, look at the fucking USSR. Socialism has done what it was meant too every single time. Nationalizing oil or other resources and then redistributing that wealth to programs to lift people out of poverty has always worked. In capitalism, you get off your ass and get to jobs just to barely make ends meet. Majority of Americans can’t handle a 500 dollar random fine. America has one of the highest levels of poverty, medical debt, and homelessness in the world. Badflower is anti-capitalist and anti-conservative… I mean, have you heard the song Die??

This is so powerful for all generations still above ground that have lived or still live this. I made it home (OIF) and so did my father ( Vietnam) but I had to fight for 10 years for military medical benefits and as of year 2015 my father has been fighting from cancer and diabetes due to agent orange that our government doesn’t want to acknowledge . Sadly the fight doesn’t stop if you’re able to make it home. To all generation : past, present, and future ones, I hope, pray, and wish for you to not have to fight longer than your enlistment and that you stay safe. Thank you for making such an impactful and deep meaning ballad.

That last line. "Once you leave a headstone, you never really make it home." It's interesting, because it can be interpreted in two intertwined ways. Either you're killed, and you as a person don't make it home- even if your body might, or you kill someone else, physically leaving a headstone, and mentally never making it home. Theres a lot of little nuances like this in this song, which is part of why I love it so much

@@haydnpierson9447 it really is. The US corporations have used the military to overthrow democratically elected socialist govts all around the world, look at south America, Asia, Africa and the middle east. Iran in the 50s, Allende in Chile 1973, etc. The US was lobbied by corporations who exploited the resources and workers of these "poor countries", to stop the working class revolutions that happened there. Look up how many socialist govts the US has destroyed in third world nations, there are no "poor nations", they are just "over exploited!". These poor nations are RICH in natural resources, but capitalist imperialism from the US prevents those countries from nationalizing/socializing their own resources, so US corporations can come in and take them and exploit the workers there.

Well I'm pretty sure this is the best song on the album!! The others were all great so far but this one is so well written and tells a story like no other song explains! The vocals were amazing! Melodies were great! Love this song! The ending is powerful enough I think it could've ended the album!!

This song really hits home right now with the war drums beating in the background over ukraine and Taiwan. War is imminent. One on a scale none of this generation has ever seen, and this time America will not be beyond reach.

I love the subtle secondary political hits in a lot of their songs, like “they treat me for my shell shock, but they won’t even pay for it” about US and VA healthcare, or the line about refugees in My Funeral. Gets you thinking about the interconnectivity of our national and global problems.

Absolutely. This is the post-war anthem for all the millennials who went to fight and are now back home grappling with what they had to do. To add insult to injury, the terrible way we left Afghanistan and now the fact that the enemy is back in control of the country… kinda feels like it wasn’t really worth it and all of those young men died for literally nothing but to enrich the military industrial complex and politicians… but you’re right, this is definitely the spiritual successor to “Hero of War”.

That's just what they told me You could be a patriot Don't you love your country? Don't you wanna die for it? How could they enlist me? I was only seventeen It's better to be thankful Than challenge their authority This is how the world is This is how they suck you in Manipulate the broken To suffer every consequence They gave me a machine gun But I don't wanna hurt no one There's nothing here to fight for This is someone else's war That's just what they told me Son, you could be a patriot Defender of your country Protector of the innocent We'll beat 'em with a clenched fist By order of your government They said we were the good guys But what if we're the terrorists? This is how the world is This is how they suck you in Manipulate the broken To suffer every consequence They gave me a machine gun But I don't wanna hurt no one There's nothing here to fight for This is someone else's war This is how the world ends This is how they suck you in Manipulate the broken To suffer every consequence I'm only a statistic And no one even gives a shit The treatment for my shell shock Yeah, they won't even pay for it I fired that machine gun I never meant to hurt no one And as my friends and foes bleed We satisfy a rich man's greed Maybe I don't know a damn thing I've never been through anything This is all I can be A voice for someone else's grief He fired that machine gun She never meant to hurt no one 'Cause once you leave a headstone You never really make it home
