The family 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe has just ticked over 300,000kms, and the ride quality has been getting steadily worse over the last 6 months. There was a horrible noise from the front suspension that I couldn't track down, and the car would hit the bump stops even on gentle bumps.
The answer was to fit a new set of KYB Excel G shock absorbers that I purchased from Rock Auto. I also replaced the bump stops and top mounts.
This is how the job went and as you can see I found a couple of surprises along the way!
Parts came from here:

Great video, lots of information, great demonstration, plus it was great to watch a video without the presenter losing it, getting angry, cursing, throwing tools, etc. I also enjoyed your quiet demeanor as you explained everything. I had changed struts and shocks on a previous hyundai santa fe so this was a good upgrade on my newer Santa fe that is needing a change. Finally, thank you for your lesson to all of awesome parenting! Your patience with your son Patrick, allowing him to help when it was safe, building his skills and self esteem was great! I think the parenting lesson was more important that the mechanical lessons. Great job sir!

One thing you forgot to show was how difficult it is to remove the top nut of the old front shocks (Mac' struts) if you don't have the proper tools! I put a clamp on the shock rod to stop it turning when undoing the top nut. Then when you put the new shock in, there's a flat spot you have to line up with the flat spot on the top mount to push it all the way in, so you can tighten the new self locking top nut all the way to the stop without the shock rod turning. If you want to tighten the nut to torque specs, there is no way you can do it on the car. The only way I found to do is to torque everything off the car, and hope for the best putting it back in the car without aligning everything up.

Your son is adorable. Excellent thing to interest him in doing these maintenance operations on the car: for him now it is a fun game (and much more creative than the playstation or the computer). And when he's an adult, he'll know exactly where to get his hands on the car's engine.

Another great job from "Team Badgertronix". You sure got your monies-worth out of the old ones, I'm surprised the poor one wasn't covered in oil, or maybe there was none in to start with? Don't forget to train up Master Patrick with a bit of common sensible Health & Safety too, he sure is keen to get involved. DJ in the U.K.

Thanks David. Not sure what happened to the old one. No signs of leaks so maybe I need to dissect it to find out. I keep the boys away from anything dangerous, at least until they can carry out an adequate risk assessment.

I have a clunking sound coming from the rear of my Santa Fe. Shop checked it out and wants $1,200 to replace the front shock assembly and $500 for the rear struts. The rear seems straightforward enough to tackle on my own. Up until now on this car, I have only done brakes/rotors and replaced a bearing but based on your video, I am going to save a few and handle the shocks on my own. Nice Video!! Is it necessary to do a wheel alignment after replacing all 4?

Been trying to find a video online where you would have had someone upgrade a santa fe with high end struts and shocks like bilstein...2009 santa fe 3.3l awd, rather than ask why can it be done and how would I go about that?, online stories only supply the oem replacement. Good video thanks...kyb is what I would go with otherwise, just looking for some suspension the meets and exceeded oe..

I was looking for kyb for my 2009, I want a monomax for the rear and the gas charged plus coil overs for the front can't seem to find them for this vehicle. Frustrating because my trim is a GLS, but it says gls is 2.7v6, so I always have to put limited because i have the 3.3lv6 but it's Gls with the 3.3, anyways, I would like kyb not the entry-level which is better it than the condition and what I got anything would be good, but can you find anywhere on the web a kyb momomax absorber for the rear and it's the counterpart for the front appreciate your time cheers.

You referred to the spring compressors as "death clamps".......aptly named. I was always taught to take a short length of sturdy chain and thread it through the coils, top to bottom, joining the ends with a bolt and nut......that way, if the clamps fail, the chain will prevent the spring from fully expanding at a rate of knots, and killing or injuring anyone in its way................

The original equipment on my Santa Fe was definitely KYB. Made in Korea with identical markings to the factory ones. They're holding up great after the year or two they've been installed.
