Time to get on with sorting the suspension. So far only the new shocks and top mounts have arrived. Both Topran brand parts that although are budget in nature always seem to perform well for me.
The information in this video can be helpful for a lot of similar Audis from the 1980s and 1990s including the Audi 80, 90, Coupe, quattro and UR-quattro

I must admit Jonathan that I’ve never seen a strut like that before where the ball joint attaches to the strut housing. And when you pulled the shaft from out of the housing that was a surprise. And those special tools that you had would surely come in handy. This video will definitely help anyone out there who has a car of this vintage. Keep up the good work Jonathan and a great video. 😀 👍

Definitely a few quirky things about these Audis. They were the only cars I worked on for years so I had no idea other vehicles were different. Cheers Terry, have a great weekend

Sooooorted alright. The tie rod connection to the strut looks like it is not a cast priece - looks like stamped steel - ya I could see it not coming off with a wacky wacky of the hammer :)

I used to change a lot of those / that style. My comment on instagram referred to the Audi 5000 where you can leave the strut in the car... remove the top mount in the engine bay, loosen the securing nut with the pipe wrench and then pull the strut insert out the top of the strut mount hole. Very quick and easy... rather than pull the whole assembly.

ah true, that would freak Steve out. Will have to be my next car and will make sure it has UFO brakes 😂

Arrrh shock inserts... reminds me of my apprenticeship. Careful with those ‘Widow Maker’ spring compressors. Still use mine for some applications but they still get the asshole twitching 😁

@@Badgertronix Thank you. I don't have a vice to hold the strut, and I'll need to buy the wrench to undo that big nut. That part is my only real issue. One question; when doing up the top nut at the top of the strut tower in the engine bay, why do you need to use the allen key?
@Badgertronix
@Badgertronix 4 жыл бұрын
The Allen key stops the piston of the shock absorber from turning. Without holding it still you can't tighten it

So I've done the rear shocks and springs. The new ones are too long. On the front struts, that big nut/washer you need the pipe wrench for. As there's a new one with the new shocks, can that be carefully cut off, do you think? I just see problems trying to get it of by turning it. And I'd need to buy a pipe wrench just to use it twice!

God i'm jealous of you lot down under. Can you imagine what a rusty nightmare what few of these left on the road are over here? You would literally have to cut the entire suspension out of the car. I've also never seen one of those types of strut. Top job. Soooooorted!

It's my happy place. My favourite cars, rust free and in great condition. If only it didn't take a week for parts to arrive. I don't miss rust one bit

Hey, i have a 1992 80 B4 2.8 v6 quattro..... driver side(right hand drive) hit a path and bent something and the only thing i have not changed yet is the strut housing for the shock. and there is still a miss-alignment somewhere and i heard the struts are the weaker place that could bend in the whole front suspension. but i cannot find anywhere online to get one new or second hand. i am in dublin ireland and would like to know if you know anywhere or any place that might have one even if i have to get it shipped to Ireland. thanks in advance
