Genius is a word that is bandied about too lightly by people who have struck the word "excellent" from their vocabulary and who lack a sense of proportion. Even if we limit ourselves to the British Isles, that country has so many comedians of the same talent and stature as Coogan that to claim he somehow surpasses them is ludicrous. If we were to believe YT commenters, the world is chock-full of underrated geniuses.

Ironically, my experience has been totally different. Pushed off the Social Housing queue in The 1970s to, literally, accommodate, the homeless immigrants from The Caribbean and Asiatic Nations. Then, at work, being given a permanent contract with an Inner London Council, after due process, only for 3 weeks later a memo to arrive "from high " saying that " As Black people were under-represented in The Education Department" then the whole interviewing process had to be done again and a Black candidate appeared from nowhere to take the only position and I was out altogether and it prevented me getting a position in The Police Force on the flimsiest technicality after gaining 100% marks on all their myriad of diversity questions (having lived with a Caribbean Lady for 20+ years helped my knowledge ). Fortunately, I turned all of these negatives into positives by owning my own house and owning 2 Medium-Sized Businesses but it is hardly the point :)

This speech is in no way clever or subtle. It's obvious, contrived, and if he'd said too much he'd have been biting the hand that's feeding him. It's divided opinion in a very interesting way though. I used to love Steve Coogan as a comedian, but he lost it around Saxondale and started trying to mildly amuse the middle and upper classes. I can't quite put into words how I disappointed I was to see the first minute or so of this video.

I know someone who was a crew member on one of his shows and at the end of filming he was incredibly generous and gave everyone a nice thoughtful gift. I like the stories from his early days when he was such a caner! This is is a nice speech , but maybe a bit too long. Anyone with a brain will understand theJudy Dench joke , no need to explain irony etc. Get the morons on twitbook going all spazz crazy

Coogan would certainly acknowledge Henry Normal- he’s worked with him for over 20 years. They set up Baby Cow - check out their list of productions. His career went just fine without relying on the poetry, topped off with a BAFTA for services to TV comedy in 2017 just after he retired.

A lot of people saying he was making fun of SJWs. I don’t feel like that is true? Ultimately, he admits that as a middle aged white man, he did not have to battle “anything” (read as: systemic bullshit and identity-based adversity. Obviously everyone has their own struggles). Obviously, he’s employing an ironic tone throughout the whole speech, so you’ve got to be smart enough to read between the lines, but I think the joke is on self important middle aged white guys who aren’t self aware enough to realize some people have it worse than them. I know, I know. I’m dissecting the frog here. But I think it’s obnoxious that people are co-opting Coogan’s speech into a political point that seems the opposite of what he actually believes (see also: his comments about the “dicks” in office and “punching down” in the VERY SAME speech.)
