I have admired you some time now. This is pure gift for American people. Now, not only do I admire your forthrightness, your careful attention to what you say, your willingness to be corrected on camera and your attention to detail, to name a few, I am also thankful for your commitment to your mission and providing this for all of us. Brava!

Rachel... That... was just chilling. I was in my early teens at the time Nixon and Agnew were in office. My uncles had come home from Vietnam, the world was swirling around me,, so many things more important - it seemed - and the alternative for me to nightly news was Mad Magazine.

Agnew should have gone to jail. If he had been prosecuted then it would have opened up the prosecution of Nixon. That is why it is so very important that Trump be prosecuted for his crimes.

I had just graduated from high school in 1972, and remember this whole mess so clearly. I remember coming home from school and turning on the TV for the latest news of the investigation. By the next year I was following this story closely. I was always fascinated by politics and when I turned 18. I knew that in July 1971 the 26th amendment had been passed for 18 year old's to vote, and I was so thrilled to be able to vote in 1972. I voted for the honorable candidate McGovern. This horrible time in our history was something that wet my appetite for politics and I've been active ever since. Oh that more young people would be more interested and involved in voting.

As a scientist and a historian, I appreciate the thorough and detailed research with the citation of references. You antcipate the "Where's the proof?" question. A question the Republicans never seem able to address. I remember this time but never knew these details.

This story would have ended quite differently if we could tell the future: It took nearly another year for Nixon to be ousted, but we had no idea about THAT. One wonders whether Agnew would have cracked and gone to prison if Time were less of an urgent factor. Very well done. Thanks!

Rachel, you are a fabulous teacher! I remember those days, but I didn't know much about this back story. If it was included in "All the President's men", then I did know, but have forgotten. 50 years is a long time, but the Trump Era was significantly worse. And the narcissism factor was considerably stronger with Mr. Trump.

Bottom line in this story, and in what we are currently going through with Donnie Trump, is that when politics enters the realm of justice, all bets are off. We are better than that. There should be absolutely NO double standard - no allowing political figures, or powerful business figures, to negotiate their way out of justice - especially by abusing the powers of their office. It is sickening.
@andyjenkins242 жыл бұрын
I found this so so interesting. Somehow I knew He was going to strike a deal. I think I had said in the past Trump will try and use running in 2024 as leverage. This is why I’m glad I’m a way the abundance of charges he’s facing. Some might go away, but the trouble he is facing in New York could bring about Financial Ruin. You hear his supporters say how he didn’t take a paycheck. If that is true it’s only because that’s small potatoes compared to some of the scams he was running.
@teresakolacz7358 Жыл бұрын
Trump gave up his 1st paycheck. Recently acquired tax returns proved he kept the rest. If only they paid attention to the truth and not the propaganda, they wouldn't worship the grifter.

Elliot Richardson had to think of the big tomorrow of the country to consider!! Yes!! Putting away Agnew would be a great achievement for the prosecutors ,but, if he had stayed & Nixon left, ( which the Watergate files would force his resignation anyway) Getting rid of a Agnew would be much harder!

45, in our presidency, has made all Americans aware that we must return to the process of electing only the very finest, most honest, most intelligent people for leading our government. It's far too much trouble and too expensive to try to clean up the rot and espionage from the inside. Our leaders have not always been perfect, but we have made far better choices in the past. Second in line for the Presidency, Speaker of the House does not need to hold any elected office. SO, in a time of national crisis, we have no idea who we might end up with.

I left Marines in May of 73, and had been out of the country almost a year and a half prior to that, so I was busy with life like finding a job and missed a lot of this. I knew Nixon was removed and I switched from Republican to Independent, but none of the details beyond Watergate and the blank tape. The plan of Agnew's to get impeached and somehow survive that, seems to mirror my concern that the 1/6 commission has brushed off the investigation of Republicans in Congress and only naming a handful for "ethics". Republicans taking over the House all but gives those mentioned, a free pass. Unless the DoJ does something about members aiding the coup and obstructing the investigation of that coup, it proves there are people "above the law", ie, politicians.

I teared up listening to Barney getting so emotional about the case after all that time. You could tell he believes in justice and truly wanted to show the public that NOBODY is above the law. To see your work and your belief system be compromised like that...I get why they did it but Agnew (like so many others in power) never got the punishment he truly deserved. Shame on him, Nixon, and all the other folks who abuse the public's trust so selfishly (lookin at you, MAGA)
