My working process is a simple one; I start on location, sketching, photographing and painting. Some of these field studies make their way to the studio. In the studio I use all of that visual information and combine it with the sense or feeling I had for a location and create what is inevitably an abstraction of sorts in that it is not merely a copy of a photo but an interpretation of place. I hope that you enjoy the work!

Thank you for all the techniques you shared about pastel under painting. I saved your video because there is so much information that I need to listen to it again. I love your paintings and I appreciate the way you clearly share your thoughts and your expertise. I started painting with pastel and then changed to oil, but I still love painting with pastels. Thanks!

Great inspiration with all the different approaches - I especially liked the fluid Acrylics and also the very soft pastel with 70 % isopropylalkohol - Thank you very much for the sharing of your approaches

Interesting and very informative - and it was fun to see your thinned down oil - it looked quite different from the images you had in your studio. And maybe another question is how finished do we prefer our images to get. I really liked your graphite "underpainting" - I found them very beautifull on their own - maybe because they had more spontaneity than you very perfectly painted more finished pastel pieces.

Some of the examples with acrylic underpaintings look somewhat glossy. Do you have to coat with clear gesso or another product to get the pastel to stick? This a great video showing so many options for underpaintings! Thanks so much for your generous sharing!

It would have been nice if you showed the paintings much closer so that it was possible to see the details especially when you talk about the different textures

I was wondering if you could recommend a sanguine toned pencil for sketching portraits on pastel paper that will not get smudged with pastels/pastel pencils. Thanks so much!

Great question! No. Because the underpaintings are really thin and don't fill the tooth of the sandpaper.
