Marla makes her home in Portland, Oregon and travels extensively throughout the United States teaching painting workshops and jurying shows. Marla is a sought after workshop instructor, adept at helping students develop an individual painting style. Her approach to painting reflects both the formal art education she received at Art Center College of Design and the years of experience that can only be gained from behind the easel.
“It’s a great honor to work with students to pass on some of the knowledge I’ve gained from my many great instructors and my own discoveries as a painter. I’m a true believer that the fundamentals of painting combined with our individual voices make painting a uniquely satisfying endeavor. As a teacher, I provide a strong base of the fundamentals of painting to guide every student in reaching their unique artistic intentions in a supportive, nurturing and creative environment.” - Marla

Thanks Marla, for your painting and demonstration. It is great to watch how you improvise certain elements within the composition and adjust lights and darks within. Nice atmospheric feel to it.

Thank you! Simply magical! Your painting is so expressive, lyrical and poetic. It is so indicative of why a photograph is different from a painting. How do you do that? Love it! Nothing against hyperrealism but soooooo different.

I notice I never see you blow on the paper and I have read that this is not good health wise to do but how do you deal with excessive pastel dust when for example you work back into the sky and the dust coats the house roof or other objects in the painting? Thank you for your time, I so love watching your videos.

Hi Laura, I try to avoid blowing on the pieces and don't want to kick up the dust. I work vertically and have a dust catcher at the bottom of the easel to keep things clean and tidy.

Do you mean like a vac system or the dust collector thing you showed how to make? Because even though I watched that video and made one i still sometimes get dust that just doesn't fall but stays stuck on the paper. The only way I can get it off is to either blow which i don't want to do or take it off the board/easel and knock it off. What am I doing wrong? I can't imagine how busy you are and i truly appreciate you taking time to answer questions.

Laura Senchuk Try tilting the top of the easel slightly forward, with the bottom slightly backwards, rather than straight up and down.

I am confused by the pattern of light and dark in the reference photo. From which direction is the light coming? The sloping line of light green below the house....is that lightness caused by the sun or is that just lighter vegetation? Everything around it is in shadow. What is causing such a sharp, thin line of lightness? What is casting the shadow on the lower part of trees to the right of the house? By your placement of bright green on the right side of the foliage, I assume you are saying that the light source is coming from the right. I think that I would need to understand these things if I were depicting the scene, although the finished piece doesn't seem to suffer from the ambiguity. Thank You.
