BAGGY PANTS VS. SLIM PANTS | MENS FASHION TRENDS 2024

Mens fashion trends and menswear trends have been speeding up the velocity at which we consume mens fashion and menswear as a whole, especially due to the new social media landscape of 2024! We are already seeing the seedlings of the mens fashion trends 2024 look, and are watching menswear trends evolve quite literally before our eyes! The menswear trend cycle is speeding up faster than ever, making what used to be a 10-15 year period now an 8-10 year trend cycle.
This is going to completely change menswear and mens fashion, for better and for worse. But today, we focus on the good and why new and "old:\" mens fashion trends can coexist and diversify. The prime example of this ideology is the new resurgence of slim pants (not skinny pants) coming back into the mens fashion trends 2024 scene, which is now at a place where it can live alongside the baggy pants or wide leg pants trends of 2024.
Baggy pants vs slim pants or wide leg pants vs slim pants has long been an argument in menswear and mens fashion as a whole, complicating the streetwear scene and sort of locking people into one particular style. However, with the advancement of the trend cycle, and with the newfound stress on "wear what you want," we can now enjoy a closet filled with baggy pants and slim pants that work well and live together to unlock a new mens style!

So … did I miss the recent ‘15 years of wide pants’ cycle? Because as far as I know it’s been skinny and slim since The Strokes 20 years ago. Straight and wide never went mainstream in that period. But who cares, it’s what I like.

@@AlejandroJomar I’m 47. In ‘my time’ (the 90s) jeans were rather roomy/straight at first, then bootcut later. By the time skinny and slim came, I felt I was already too old to pull off the look so I simply didn’t. Some self-awareness wardrobe-wise goes a long way. But I’ll say one thing, most people don’t have any idea beyond the high street. And if the high street dictates it’s slim, then slim is all you’re gonna find. Which until quite recently was the case. But now that I know a bit more, I just shop online and get Japanese denim in these absolutely cool cuts that I always wanted but Zara et al never gave me.

And ultimately it makes for more interesting outfits since less people are doing them. But I can definitely say a lot of people, especially in New York are on the wide pants wave right now. the part about how some materials are better in slim or wider is on point. A linen pant in a heavier fabric weight looks really nice in a straight or wide trouser for the drape but would be suffocating in a slim especially when you need the airflow in summer.

Great video, sir. One thing I always consider is the body type. Wear whatever you want of course, but I think wide and flared leg jeans look disproportional on us tall lanky guys and so the most I’ll ever do is a straight leg. Maybe someday I’ll feel like going full disco, but for now I’ll keep it more proportional.

Amazing video and helpful advice, thanks ! More into classic menswear, like high rise and pleated trousers, I've recently purchased some ivory pleated Marni trousers with a super high rise, super wide (9 inches at bottom) I think these are really beautiful but I struggle to find the necessary confidence to pull them off, as these are quite a statement piece, and highlights my slender silhouette. I think maybe I'm missing a yacht to go with it ? Or maybe I should bring these to my alterations tailor ? Any advice would be more than welcome. Peace

Lowkey on a technical standpoint you’re definitely right, but I love that they stand on their own wave and play off the Heritage feel, which is what is making them so popular now. If they made a wider pant though I’d hop on that wave instantly! I tried their pants on and they’re just a touch too slim for me, but they’re other stuff is GAS bro! High fashion may be one thing and it's always more projected forward than what's currently in, but in mainstream, high street brands, it's been skinny and slim all the way down the past 10 years. I think you have this backwards in fact. In the past few years I was literally the only person I know who kept on wearing straight leg trousers (even erring towards wide in summer), definitely felt completely out of fashion. Also had to look everywhere to find suitable trousers. It's only a couple months that I'm noticing an inversion of trend, with e.g. even Suitsupply, one of the worst culprit of the skinny trend, actually starting to offer _multiple_ straight or even wide cuts. Indeed I bought my first pair of jeans after years of not wanting anything to do with jeans, since everything actually available around here was too slim and too low waist. Yes I know japanese denim was always there, but not only it is super expensive, it's also very hard to find to try on as very very few shops stock it.

I respect your perspective and what you said wholeheartedly. However, I would definitely say I disagree with you in terms of high street brands pushing skinny/slim garments. Dries Van Noten, Takahiro Miyashita, South2 West8 and so on to name a few have been pushing wider silhouettes for quite some time, and are just now slimming up in their current and projected runway collections. Brands like Suit Supply tend to cater towards the market of men who more-so “need to dress” rather than those who care about fashion. But one thing I will say is it definitely is more of a locale thing too, as I’m in New York and probably see things before most people, besides those who live in Paris and Japan. Do please tell me if I misread or misinterpreted your comment however. Because I feel like in some ways I might have lol 😭

@@AlejandroJomar I think the key point, as I was saying, is that high fashion and actually widespread fashion are very different. The first is always ahead of the second, and not all that happens in high fashion ultimately is transferred to what you can find in the malls, either. Wide legs may very well have been "in" in high fashion for a while, but all high street brands kept offering, particularly for men, was slim to very slim cuts, at least for anything except sweatpants (but even those usually have skinny elasticated ankles). At least, I can guarantee that is what happened here in Italy. Up until now. Now they are starting to catch up to the wide leg trend - and that's probably when high fashion will start to move away from it, since part of the point of high fashion is to dictate new trends compared to what's currently worn by the masses.

I like the wide leg but I don’t like the high water look. I think you need a half break at least. So you aren’t flopping around when you walk. That looks funny AF. The idea of discussing skinny fit, slim fit and baggy fit makes sense as it is a fast trend but you were literally talking the entire video about all the same thing. I suggest taking pauses and using full stops in your sentences as you are becoming very annoying.

Skinny girls jeans are horrible on men. Your pants should cover 2/3 of your shoes . Anything but Capri Please. No cuffs . Gays do cuffs. Boys do cuffs. Cuffs fuck up the legs. Leave them stacked.. no it's notacceptable for MEN to ignore fashion standards . Skinny jeans have been ruining mens appearance for 20 years!
