We provisioned for our 3 months in the Bahamas. Our plan was to bring enough food that we wouldn't HAVE to shop while there. We did want to buy fresh food and would likely be eating out occasionally but we wanted to have enough so we didn't have to worry about being remote. Also, food costs more in the Bahamas because it is all being shipped in and the VAT is 12% and we aren't made of money...
In reality, this was way more than three months worth of food. I would easily say it could cover the two of us for six months in the Bahamas, with buying fresh and eating out a few meals a week. With that in mind, this was filmed mid March 2021 and it is now mid October 2021 and we still have some of this food (some canned goods, rice, black beans, and some frozen fruit and veggies). Our inverter went out two months into our time in the Bahamas so we quit eating our rice and dried beans and bought a lot more, locally, that we could cook a lot easier. All things to keep in mind.
We are Brady & Carlie - a couple of married, creative, travel-loving, nerds living our vagabond dreams. We don't know where it will lead and that's okay with us! We recently finished flipping and selling our home, along with most of our possessions. After hiking 800 miles on the Appalachian Trail, we have decided to see the world via sailboat. Currently, we are doing some upgrades to our new to us 1990 Island Packet 35 (WV/Valinor) and then setting out. All while capturing a creative journal of our journey. We hope to show the ups, downs, good, bad, and everything in between. We will share as much as we can through journal entries on our blog, mini movies here on KZbin, and photos on Instagram. We plan to film, paint, photograph, design, and write our way around the world. Our desire is to use our creative outlets to push others to get outside, to experience other cultures, to look after Mother Earth, to dream.

Yeah my mom and I don’t use that much rice in 20 years!! Good job and I’m sure you will provision soon for the foods you love to eat!!

Hahaha it was so much rice! Our thinking was we could make loads of different rice bowl meals - the same thing but easy to change up! Still have some of the rice and beans and that is with gifting two of our bags of black beans to some cruising friends we met in the Exumas! Also, this was filmed March 14, 2021! But we learned a lot and will probably do it better the next time around!

@@HappyGoLondons you guys think the 35 will be big enough for full time cruising for one couple?

@@willyum1208 yes and no! It could be, however I don’t think it is for us. We have to use the after cabin as our “garage” for fenders, tubs of food and some of our stuff, etc. It would never be used as a cabin and we would really like to have more than one useable cabin - for visitors and growing our family eventually. And with such a small space i hate always seeing clutter everywhere, it weighs on you after awhile! We don’t have a ton of stuff, quite minimal, but we do have some slightly odd things that take up space, like our board games and my art supplies. So, we would like a bigger boat for comfort (we bounce around so much worse than our friends) and so we can put everything away. But with all that being said, some people could easily do it - especially if they are coming from van life (without a storage unit) or true minimalist without weird hobbies or artist jobs and such!😊

So that’s about $194 a week with food. I’m sure the first time doing this it will be more because you would want to have more than not having enough when you are out at sea. I’m sure you had leftovers of supplies when you got back. Do you all not eat meat? That of course would make things more expensive as you would not supplement sea food in with diet. Although island fruit would help. All very interesting. Thanks for sharing your life! 😊

Very smart to do the math for a per week! We definitely still have some of that food today (10/18/21) and we shopped back around March 16th! It is something I am sure we will get better at and we knew food in the Bahamas would be a lot more expensive and we weren't sure what, if anything, would be open or still around because of Covid. SO we wanted to be able to eat from our boat, completely, just in case! We also stocked up on over the counter meds, toothpaste, and such - so it wasn't solely food. We didn't have to do that so we definitely had way more food than needed, but I completely agree, this is something that we will get better at! I am sure when we prep for returning to the Bahamas in a few months we will likely do a better job! I (Carlie) don't eat meat, but Brady does! He is just getting into eating fish and did eat some fresh caught, by friends, while we were in the Bahamas. He also had some frozen chicken he purchased in that food haul! He eats less meat, because of me, but he does still eat it (just easier to cook one thing instead of always making two-ish meals). We did get some fresh island avocados, and purchased fresh things from their grocery stores to help replenish fresh items, as needed! I always love to see your comments, thank you!!

Why do you remove all of the labels from the cans?
@HappyGoLondons
@HappyGoLondons 2 жыл бұрын
It is a way to help limit bringing bugs onto the boat! Bugs like paper and cardboard products and can lay their eggs between the can rivets and the paper. So, to hopefully keep a bug infestation from happening we remove all of the paper and cardboard packaging possible! Re-packaging things that come in cardboard containers (like Mac and cheese or box cake, or boxed wine), removing paper labels, etc! And removing the bulk packaged items from their outer cardboard means we can fill little whole when packing everything away! We didn’t this time, but I usually wipe the cans down with vinegar, too, before we pack them away.
