Bailed Wild Camp on Kinder Scout

Join me and @GrizzlyGaz for this wild camp up on Kinder Scout in the Peak District.
I tried out 'ultraheavy' camping and tested out the Wild Country Panacea 2 tent. My pack was 16kg in total for the trip.
Though the weather forecast looked OK when we set off, we never imagined it would change the way it did.
The wind changed direction after we’d pitched up and got up to 51mph gusts, flattening Gaz's NatureHike Tunnel tent, and eventually bending the poles on my Panacea 2 (I had trekking poles in place too!).
We decided we needed to bail. The choice was to wait until the morning, where heavy rain had been forecast from 5am onwards, or head down in the dark. Either way the wind wasn't scheduled to drop so we slowly and safely packed up our gear, and took a slow walk down Grindslow Clough at 3am.
I planned to test out a new Sea 2 Summit deluxe pillow too, but you'll have to wait for a verdict once I've actually slept on it!
Thanks for watching! Ben 🤓

I live on the Eastern side of the Dark Peak and over the last few years I’m sure the winds are getting worse not to mention the rain. I only camp when doing an extra long walk/run but then I use a Jack Wolfskin Gossamer I, very low profile tent that can handle sudden high winds 🥶

Winds are tent wreckers. Can turn so quickly especially on hill tops. The fire pot meals are great in my finding. Need to get the water raging boiling, and I’ve found keeping it inside either my Patagonia insulated jacket, or inside my homemade reflective bubble/foil pocket for these meals works well at keeping it hot and it cooks better

Good to test limits, but then again, I am getting old and like my sleep, so not sure I could be arsed with trying to battle with those winds. Lesson learnt on viable wind speeds, thanks for trying it out, so I don’t have to. I guess decent forecasting matters, unless you don’t mind the risk of getting up in the early hours, reckon it’s best to just dodge it in that weather though, or stay somewhere different, if you can find a spot with lower predictions that’s protected. Of course, forecasts are not all that reliable, so on the other hand, it would be easy to wuss out and never go out if too careful. No one died or got injured though, you adapted and sorted it out, so a successful outing, even if it’s not quite gone to plan.

Hello Ben and Ruby. It looks really a nice tent. Very much like my Nordisk Telemark 2 in shape, if a little heavier, but less in price (I paid £400 for mine with a footprint. It was used only twice but I think it would have been way over £500 new). Any way, I like it. And there’s much about your new tent that I like too. I've got the Terra Nova Northern Lite 2, and I wild camped in it up in The Shropshire Hills on Friday 6th October. As I set it up the gusts were hitting 45mph and forecast to get worse. I hardly slept a wink all night, but the tent coped very well. I packed up at 5am. The wind was gusting over 50mph at that point and set to get nearer 60mph in the next hour. The wind had my tent bag away, but I managed to get everything else packed away and back to the car safely. I did have a slight bend in my pole set, but I think I did that cos I clipped the fly to the pole set without staking out the guy on the windward side, so the frame had to take the full force of the wind hitting the fly for a few minutes.

Gaz gets up on Fendy power. I don't think they expect folk going out in wind tunnels, most tents are not much past a summer shower and stiff breeze, useless on on tops - you need something hard, HARD lad! I don't eat that expensive shyte int packets, take some proper food wi' thee. That were fun Ben, glad your safe lad.

Think you were right to tap out in the night there. As long as you've got good navigation skills hiking out in the dark shouldn't be any different to the day just a bit slower pace. Kinder really does change weather wise, was trying to hike the whole top in a day but had to bail 3/4 of the way round due to rolling cloud, could only see 2 meters or so tops with a torch. From starting at Edale you could have gone up Ringing Roger, much better path, I ruddy hate Jacobs ladder, it's even worse walking down.

@@DaleyOutdoors I guess if poles are bent and cloth is ripped then give they both use the same materials then probably the case. The issue is when one of the sides of the tent deforms sufficiently to become a sail, which is when the forces increase rapidly and causes catastrophic damage. The trekking poles on the panacea should help because they're much stiffer than the flimsy structure of the tent poles.

Some times you just have to know when to bail and it's totally a personal choice we've all seen the comments oh I would have stayed that's up to them.tbh tho I wouldn't have expected the tent to fail yes you wouldn't be sleeping because of the noise but it's a pretty aerodynamic shape so can cope with more wind especially when the wind changes unlike a tunnel tent.oh btw get yourself a thermal pouch keeps your food hot while it rehydrates.

Great post! Don't think there's ever a perfect decision; there are often too many variables. It's all about the level of risk versus your experience. Basically, any decision that you survive, was a good decision! Shame about your tent, but as long as lessons where learnt and experience was gained, then it's not so bad; it just comes down to whether you can take the financial hit. Not that it would be possible to exactly recreate the same scenario, but I would love to see how the helm compact would fair! Love that tent! When you showed the picture of your poles as a teaser for this post, I was shocked, thinking it was one of your helms. Phew! But my biased opinion is that the helm would have stood it..haha..and that's off the back of not even being there..haha..that's how biased my opinion is! Need to check your buddies post out to see whether I need to eat my words..haha..What's his channel called? Great post, really enjoyed it. And love the self deprecating style, with the retrospective captions..haha..it really worked! Look forward to the next one. Take care Ben 😊
