Welcome to the Jefferson National Forest in Giles County, Virginia. This adventure begins with a very short hike along the Appalachian Trail to Wind Rock, one of the best overlooks in the state. The view here is to the south and west. From the AT parking, I accessed the eastern end of Bailey Gap Road, a Forest Service road that runs along the spine of Big Mountain. This 4 mile long trail is relatively easy but 4x4 and high clearance are highly recommended. Stock vehicles should watch out for some deep ruts, mud pits, and a few big rocks. The most challenging mud holes have easy bypasses. Keep in mind that at the time of recording this video Virginia had been in an extended dry period, and after a lot of rain or snowmelt the trail would be more challenging. After completing Bailey Gap, I continued on Little Meadow Road with similar trail conditions, until arriving to the old fire lookout at the summit of Butt Mountain. Just beyond the towers is Lookoff Rock, with stunning vistas down into the New River Valley around Pembroke, Virginia.
Thanks for watching!

Thanks so much for checking it out. It is awesome up there, one of my favorite areas. I've been up to the tower numerous times and often thought it would be a neat place to camp. There is evidence of some campfires there. Something new that I didn't remember seeing in the past were the half dozen surveillance cameras installed around the area. That makes me less likely to want to camp there. I guess as long as didn't mess around with the old tower or the other commercial towers up there one would probably be fine.

I hiked parts of this as an alternate to the rocky AT as part of a loop. Looked like there were some fun parts in there.

Thanks for checking it out. Yes the AT parallels the road almost its entire length. Near the actual Bailey Gap, the AT heads down the mountain towards Cherokee Flats. The road is a fun drive, nothing too crazy but it will bounce you around quite a bit haha. I was alone so I chose to bypass the deeper mud pits.

How were you able to get your truck all the way up to the fire tower? Every time I go there is a metal blockade i have to park and walk the last stretch.
