Welcome to the Jefferson National Forest in Giles County, Virginia. This adventure begins with a very short hike along the Appalachian Trail to Wind Rock, one of the best overlooks in the state. The view here is to the south and west. From the AT parking, I accessed the eastern end of Bailey Gap Road, a Forest Service road that runs along the spine of Big Mountain. This 4 mile long trail is relatively easy but 4x4 and high clearance are highly recommended. Stock vehicles should watch out for some deep ruts, mud pits, and a few big rocks. The most challenging mud holes have easy bypasses. Keep in mind that at the time of recording this video Virginia had been in an extended dry period, and after a lot of rain or snowmelt the trail would be more challenging. After completing Bailey Gap, I continued on Little Meadow Road with similar trail conditions, until arriving to the old fire lookout at the summit of Butt Mountain. Just beyond the towers is Lookoff Rock, with stunning vistas down into the New River Valley around Pembroke, Virginia.
Thanks for watching!
