A tip when baking normals and get the error”no objects selected”: select object, then ensure that “selected to active” is NOT check if you are baking to a single object. If you are baking a hi-ploy to a low-poly, check that box. Ryan can confirm or deny this use case but it tripped me up for a bit when I switched to baking multiple textures from the normal UV map I created.

Thanks for the info! 👍 This tutorial wasn't covering how to bake low poly to high poly. It was just about baking one UV map to another. But maybe I will make a tutorial sometime on how to bake from high poly to low poly. : )

A valuable hint in regard to multiple UV maps: when joining two objects that both have a UV map (or several)... make sure that both sets of maps have the same name. Otherwise the UV map of the joined-in object will simply disappear. Cause me lots of headache until I realized that.

I watched all your baking tutorials, they are very helpful. Thank you ! There is a thing that seems to work different than explained here. At least in blender 3.1 but I think in older versions is the same. The UV Map node that you add at 3:09, it doesn't seems to make a difference on what UV map you chose in it. The actual UV Map used for baking is the one selected in UV Maps in the inspector (for Object Data Properties). UVMap 2 remained selected after you created it there (at 1:56), that's the reason it used UVMap 2 for baking and NOT because it was selected in UV Map node added at 3:09. Please let me know if I'm right or I'm missing something. Thank you !

Maybe a little off topic, but I had real problems with the Node Wrangler preview not working, or intermittendly working. The correct connection would be made to Viewer/Material output from the previewed node (and the Use Nodes box was checked). Turned out it was due to multiple slots filled with materials. Deleting all the slots, so it is only Slot 1 that is filled fixed it. I have watched multiple of your videos, and they have all helped greatly, but I do not remember you ever mentioning this.

When you said the CPU baking works "better" than GPU... what does that mean? Faster? Better quality? Less crashes?
@RyanKingArt3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, sorry, I should have made that more clear. I've had multiple people in video comments say that baking with GPU works for them. And sometimes when I've baked with GPU, it works fine. But other times when I've used GPU, it will bake and then the finished bake will just be a black image. I don't know why this sometimes happens. Maybe it only happens for me. But I've just found that CPU works correctly constantly. But you could totally try using GPU.

Nice!! You just apply it on the same object. But, what if I want apply it on different objects. For example, from one face, to another. Or, from one face to another body. I mean skin.
@Groffili3 жыл бұрын
In the baking tab, there's the option "Selected to Active". It's often used to bake normal maps from high poly objects to low poly versions... but you can use it to bake any and all other options as well. Andrew Price had a good tut in his "anvil series" about the normal baking... and you can apply that to diffuse maps as well. The only real problem is to find out the correct values for the distance. I haven't seen any tutorial explaining that as yet... and I have always resorted to trial and error.
@RyanKingArt3 жыл бұрын
@@Groffili Thanks! Yeah I think that would be the best way to do it. Or you could just add the material to the other object, and then bake it. @VAITS

Adding the material to the other object can only work if both objects already have the same UV map... or use a pure procedual shader.

Something I found while trying this (blender 3.3), the baker only uses the selected UV map in the object properties, it doesn't care about the input UV map on the node for the output image.

Can you do this without nodes? My project hasn't got any because I didn't create the object in Blender and I don't know how to set new ones up (I just want the texture, no gloss or anything else - I also looked at the nodes, the "UV Map" isn't in the list). I already tried to just bake it with the "cycles" render engine but not only did it overwrite the original texture with the new UVs but they were also black (I disabled both lighting options under "Bake/Influence" because I don't want any special lighting but just the texture).
@RyanKingArt2 жыл бұрын
You don't have nodes? Did you import your object into Blender? Blender uses Nodes for its material system, so if your object has a material, then it should have nodes. I don't know how you could do this without nodes.

Is your material a metallic material? Is it made of metal? If so, then check out my tutorial on how to texture bake metallic maps.
@stefanbachrodt70722 жыл бұрын
Nice, haven't used this method before. I'm stuck tho, I've duplicated my triangulated model and retopologized it using Quad Remesher then unwrapped it after creating seams. I'm aware that you can "Transfer Mesh Data" with UVs option and that does a decent job but it screws up my UVs (basically reverts them to the layout of the original mesh). I have had success with "Selected to active" baking with past versions of blender but for some reason the new version just bakes black and I can't figure out why. Perhaps you could elaborate? I have image textures (unlinked and selected) in the shader for both the destination mesh (4 materials) and the source mesh (2 materials, linked with output selected) which I believe is the correct way to do it but still baking black onto my new UVs with both Diffuse and Emit options. I've reached my wits end here...
@stefanbachrodt70722 жыл бұрын
Ok nvm making some headway, although blender is glitching, i have to save baked UVs then replace and only then do the textures show. WEIRD!!

Hi, is there a way to do this with objects that have been joined together? I joined several objects and it's messed up their UV maps. Now when I select the combined mesh as a whole and try to bake it says no valid objects selected. I also tried to go into edit mode and select the objects individuals (select linked), but still get the same message. Any idea how I can do this?
@RyanKingArt2 жыл бұрын
sorry for the late reply. To join objects together without messing up the UV map, you need to rename the UV maps to the exact same name, in the object data properties. Then you can join them together and it will keep the placement of the UV maps.

@RyanKingArt3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can bake the textures of multiple objects at the same time. Just select all of the objects at the same time, and then follow the same steps in the tutorial.
@Seviexe3 жыл бұрын
@@RyanKingArt wow, that was quick! Doesn't quite want to work like that, it does something funky when trying to switch the active UV for multiple objects (to unwrap them again). Maybe i missed something, but yes the baking itself works flawlessly, so even exporting-importing the original UV is a good workaround.
