Marshmallow is a great herbal - I advise researching all of its uses. Amaranth also. Tomatoes, Thornburn's Terra Cotta is an absolute must for flavor and production! Being from a Dutch family I also purchased the very interesting Filderkraut cabbage for making sauerkraut (fermented cabbage); I actually have 2 - 2 gallon glass containers with fermenting cabbage in my cupboard right now. Basil; the lime basil makes a fabulous delicious tea. I also got licorice basil, so glad to hear that you like it! Exciting!!! If you want pollinators, our best performer (about which we were totally shocked) is the Tithonia, Mexican Sunflower. They plants grew as tall as our house with multiple small orange blooms attracting so many bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Yes, hummingbirds on a sunflower?! They like heat and start really performing in late June and don't stop until frozen. Even as the plants were dying and slowed down production, we left them in because all of the insects still depending on them for their last meals of the year. Tithonia is a must have for the pollinators. We plant bergamot with tomatoes for pollination. Amazing! Safflower was pretty beneficial for the pollinators also. So much so that I only picked 1 flower for seasoning rice. This year, I hope to have a plethera of Safflower plants so I get some without feeling guilty for taking food from beneficial pollinators. It gets a couple of feet tall and is a little prickly. I grew it in front of the Tithonia last year next to the brick walk. I will plant it away from walkways and behind shorter flowers this year; probably with some orange cosmos and yellow zinnias. I hope some of this information helps. We are in 7a, E TN in a large valley encircled by mountains. This will be our 4th garden year here. Good luck! Can't wait to see the garden results and harvest uses / preservation!

So fun! The Gaillardia Double Sunset is stunning! I have grown it the past 2 years, and it never fails to blow me away with its unique beauty. As for flowers that attract pollinators, Tithonia, Agastache, and Hyssop are the ones I have noticed having the most around here.

Some tomatoes do take on a different flavor when tried differently than just fresh. Some I definitely prefer cooked or roasted but don’t want them on a sandwich.

Borage, Blue spice Basil, Dill, Sweet Alyssum all really brought in pollinators I also have Mason bees which come out early and pollinate things like apple trees they are usually done by June, so I plan on getting leaf cutter bees this year again. I purchased some a couple years ago but none of them stuck around, but I didn't use invita bee spray attractant or natural reeds, so figured I would give it another shot. I don't really have a problem with pollinators I grow so many flowers and have several hummingbird feeders just enjoy raising the bees.

That is a dream of mine to someday have my own bee hives. I would spoil them so hard. I keep trying to bring them in. In spring there’s alot but then I think neighbors spray weed killers and such and by mid summer I’m hand pollinating my squash. Someday I’ll have bees. 😊

There’s just a couple lettuce varieties I’m tryin to make sure I isolate the seed because they had poor germination and I very much want more of that particular variety but I too usually just mix them all up. 😁

Hi Richard. It’s my understanding that the purple galaxy tomatoes were never actually sold by baker creek this year. Their websites says they were hoping to have limited quantities but are having production issues and they think it’s unlikely they will be offering it to customers at all this year. So you probably won’t be able to find from anyone. Maybe next year baker creek will have better production of it. Happy gardening to you. And thanks so much for your support. 😁

About your Otricoli orange berry, I went looking on the internet, and found the notation that these berries must not be eaten unless (until?) fully ripe and as birds eat them quite eagerly, you may not see many berries for a few years until (unless?) the plant's production of berries outstrips the birds' appetites for them. Also noted: this thing self-seeds prolifically and even with regular, severe pruning in the winter, you'll need to keep an eye on it because it will take over your garden, given half a chance. Sounds like something you want to keep your kids and pets away from. Meanwhile, claims for this plants health-conferring attributes are most emphatically *not,* repeat NOT, supported by the USDA. I've also been to Baker Creek's online catalog and as of this writing, meaning as I keyboard these words, I don't find "Otricoli orange berry" listed among their offerings although I do find "Scarlet Wolfberry," and I don't know if that's the same thing. From other sources, it appears that the Scarlet Wolfberry could be related, if not identical. Baker Creek has no warning on the Scarlet Wolfberry, and "Otricoli orange berry" doesn't show at their website. Er, I think. (I really don't care for this new catalog layout.) Please be careful. Good luck.

Thank you for doing some research and letting me know. I bought these seeds before seeing that warning. I still haven’t decided whether I’m going to put it in my garden. If I do, I’ll end up putting it in a pot because I do not want it to spread like ground cherries do.
@bhalliwell2191
@bhalliwell2191 9 ай бұрын
@@jencordial Actually you'll have a problem keeping that plant contained if it's popular with the birds: they eat the berries, and a little bit after that they "drop excess weight before taking off," in the words of a fellow I used to be acquainted with, as they fly from one spot to another. If it isn't birds, well, it can be other critters such as raccoons or possums, both omnivores, and while they don't fly the effect is the same. I'm not tying to tell you, "OMIGOSH, don't do this!" It's your decision. Meanwhile, Nature provides for survival of the species, eh?

Baker Creek is great. Anise hyssop (Agastache) has been popular not only with the bees when in flower but also the finches when it goes to seed. Really, though, everything in the mint (Lamiaceae) family is wonderful. And I find zinnias very attractive to bees, butterflies and finches. Common milkweed has brought in monarch butterflies--but clearwing moths as well. A diversity of flower colors, shapes and sizes, blooming throughout the season, Spring to Autumn, is a win for everyone. Try scarlet runner beans! And don't dismiss goldenrod or other freely available species often called weeds...

😂you asked-I highly recommend calendula! It is new to me this year and now my new favorite as it can handle frost in the fall way better than most. Borage, zinnias, any kind of daisy like flowers. Garlic chives smell terrific when they flower and will be jumping with pollinators-just cut the seed heads if you don’t want a trillion plants. I think flowers are being bred to be more double flowering and many pollinators can’t get to the nectar easily. Spotted horsemint is native prairie flower and another that hums with insects. And of course snapdragons and Baker has a great orange one. Happy planning, it’s going to be a long winter.
