Lovely video, as always, and great editing! :) Question back, how can someone have just one single favorite type of pastry Kris? That's utterly impossible haha, I like them all! But yes we eat A LOT of baked sweets when travelling, to try out all the local good stuff
@bengt_axle2 жыл бұрын
The interesting thing about traditional Swedish baked goods is that they often include saffron, cardamom, cinnamon and other things like nutmeg and anise, all of which come from Asia or far away places. I wonder if this has to do with the Vikings being such explorers well before the British, French, German and other Europeans, or them just wanting a greater variety of things to eat at Fika. I really like the variety of Swedish breads, using different grains and techniques. There is even a rye bread that is soaked in coffee after it is baked.
@KrisKazlauskaite2 жыл бұрын
Yes! I didn't know they use saffron in so many pastries, but as I realised later - only during Christmas period! Would be curious to hear where are the roots of this tradition :) My respect to Swedish bakers, i felt like in wonderland ☺️many thanks for your comment 🙏🏻
@bengt_axle2 жыл бұрын
@@KrisKazlauskaite Sweden’s traditions are part pagan and part Christian. For example, St. Lucia, a pagan festival of light was later incorporated into Christian traditions and now kicks off the Christmas season with those saffron buns. Saffron was believed to ward off a type of plague. Swedish YTer Myriam Follin once explained this holiday but it is also easy to find on-line now, as I started learning the language and about the country.
@KrisKazlauskaite2 жыл бұрын
@@bengt_axle ahh yes i see! Lithuanian traditions are also mixed (pagan and cristian) so i relate the context! :) many thanks for your answer 👏

@@KrisKazlauskaite maybe for the color of the saffron, it's yellow like the gold. Symbol of wealth, perfect for the Christmas time.
@jodis82282 жыл бұрын
The reason those spices are used in pastry in Sweden is because they were much rarer and more expensive in Sweden than in more southern europe. That meant people couldnt afford using them in every day cooking like other parts of europe with more direct and easier trade with asia. Instead what little Spices people got their hands on was used in special sweet things.

Everything looked so good. I am with you. Saffron in baked goods not my cup of tea. Small world isn’t it finding someone you know in another country. Your surprise at the dog bakery surprises me. Big dog bakery chain in US called 3 Dog Bakery. Many dog friendly cities restaurants have dog items on menus. A lot of chains have a dog item or 2 on menu. Starbucks coffee has pupacinos (whipped cream in a cup) Dairy Queen ice cream has pup cups (soft serve vanilla ice cream in a cup), I cannot think of all the others. We have 4 longhair min dachshunds who go everywhere with us on vacation to dog friendly hotels, restaurants, resorts, they all fly with us. Big business here ( no we do not dress them up or in booties other than sweaters or fleeces in winter). Really enjoy your travel videos. All your videos are great but travel take me to places never been or places been and they bring back memories. Thank you
