So many salty people commenting on this - regardless of how much he's hurt your feelings, every single successful team has a player that operates on a blurred line of clean/dirty. Its always been hilarious to me that everyone will shine McCaw's knob yet take a massive issue with Bakkies. Look a little past those tremendous blinders you've got on and appreciate a stalwart of the game. He's got a world cup, several super rugby titles, Heineken/Euro cup titles, and Currie Cup all under his belt. Very few players have or will ever achieve what he did.

Bakkies frequently displayed the he had less than 2 brain cells to rub together. Truly great athletes do not resort to violence. Nor do they need to play outwith the rule book. Botha had the talent to be great and memorable. His lack of inhibition relegates him to the ranks of forgettable and ordinary, more liability, less an asset. Only a Jaapie bigot would think otherwise. So good that South African rugby has finally been dragged into the modern era. RIP thugs like Botha
@bakkiesbothatheenforcer16387 жыл бұрын
You say "Bakkies frequently displayed the he had less than 2 brain cells to rub together". Yet those 2 brain cells were enough to make him the best in the world. What does that say about the opposition? The more you belittle Bakkies the more you do the same to every player who played against him. Because he was better than any of them. Bakkies will be remembered as a legend of the game for decades after you have passed away. You say "Only a Jaapie bigot would think otherwise." Is that why the midi Olympique in France voted Botha as the best no4 lock to EVER play the game? This was voted for by coaches and sports writers, NOT even from his home country, who have followed the game for decades. What are your credentials? You say " So good that South African rugby has finally been dragged into the modern era". Here are the results since Botha retired. ZERO wins over the All Blacks. First lost to Argentina(home and away), first lost to Japan, first lost to Ireland at home and first lost to Italy. WELL DONE. South Africa has truly moved forward since Botha retired. You just sound like a bitter man who was fed up every time your team lost to Bakkies. And that had to be a lot of times.

I’ve read the comments on this thread and it brings a sadness to a rugby hart. There’s been so many awesome Nr. 4’s in days gone by. Meads, Eales, Andrews, Johnson Botha... Those were the days when a game was lost when a 4 did not bring absolute menace to a game. The days when a head would pop out of a scrum because a 4 decided to teach U something and put his stamp on things. Before the new refereeing systems got in place where blokes gets sent off for clearing a ruck there were scope for hard bastards to ply their trade. It was awesome to watch the brutality of it just so you see the bloke on the receiving end stand up and make a mental note to pay back the bugger who did it and then some.. Bring the modern Meads into the game in the shape of Retallick and his challengers like Etzebeth and it brings a further sadness to realise that these guys can no longer be their brutal physical selves. The game has made way for players like Itoje who is brilliant in intelligent rugby in their own way in a politically correct liberally controlled “equality” environment which creates such an element of entitlement in their personalities that the cannot even fathom the acceptance of a loss and refuse to put a medal around their shoulders. and It all starts and comes down to clowns who proclaims Bakkies as a Thug rather than celebrate his achievements and by default the team members around him that shared those achievements. Rettalick and Etzebeth were below par this 2019 world cup simply because they are no longer allowed to play the game they way their idols growing up did. Someone calling a rugby player a “thug” is a soccer hooligan that crossed codes and has no appreciation of Rugby history. In the days where you were stretchered off because of a hit and no one gave yellow and red cards it was accepted that Rugby is a game of brutal and physical engagement and those players being stretchered off was hailed as hero’s. Bakkies and Thorn were perhaps the last exponents of the “brutal” game of Rugby where things were still accepted to be “part” of playing the game and the reason they got away with a lot of what is considered unethical in the modern game. As with all other things in life, Rugby also evolves and with it the players need to do so as well. To call Bakkies or Thorn “Thug” is just wrong. They played the game the way the Rugby laws of their generation allowed. If Senna was racing today he definitely wouldn’t have hit the wall that killed him... Rugby is no different. If Sinckler didn’t get knocked out by Itoje?? That would probably have been a totally different game... The point is.. In Bakkies’s time the term “thug” was reserved to soccer hooligans that cleared a pub after the game. In rugby he was just a badass bloke in the mould of the Meads, Johnson’s of this world. Contemplating who was the best is equally as futile because of the difference in the laws between the time Meads and Bakkies played since the rules changed a hundred different ways till Sunday between the the generations when they lit up the brutality columns.. Personally I miss the days when brutal Nr 4’s dictated status in a game but at the same time I’m also bought on the idea that Nr. 4 has a wider contribution to the game apart from being the absolute bastard...

He scored 7 tries in his test career. 35 tries in all the rugby he played. That is more tries that Brad thorn, martin johnson, john Eals and pretty much any other lock in world rugby you can think of. You say "South Africa now play the expansive, rugged game that they are so capable of, without moronic thugs like Botha" Yes, you can see that the boks are doing a lot better without Bakkies. 50% wins for 2015, lost to Japan and Arg. Bakkies was a Hodd Bostid who played rugby for Saffafreeka!

Etzebeth is clearly a better player than Bakkies. More strong, more clean.

Based on what? Stronger? You don't know what you are talking about but thank you for your comment.

Being an enforcer, thus being hard and being dirty is different. Not saying Bakkies isn't one of the greats, but others such as Brooke, Shelford, Burger, Dallaglio, Kaino and Collins all played hard without being dirty. Could name a lot of locks that were better than him as well. Eales, Johnson, Willie John Mcbride, Meads, Matfield, and soon Retallick, Etzebeth, PSDT, Whitelock and Itoje will overtake him.
