As an Ethiopian and Orthodox Christian who grew up in Fitche, North Shewa of Ethiopia, I have personally witnessed the events described in this documentary. It deeply saddens me that our community is still lacking in understanding the significance of embracing and respecting the beliefs of others.

This documentary has really helped me as I journey from Christianity to follow the faith of Abraham Isaac and Jacob and enter into covenant with my Creator Jehovah the God of Isreal.

My oldest sister who lives in USA felt to help children in Gondar. I suggested to her if she could mention to the people of Gondar about us. “In Ethiopia we’re called Buda and in Israel Im called Negro”. The world is flawed. There’s a big difference between being in a “cage”(marginalized), ostracized and killed, than being called for something that identifies who you are. I’m PuertoRican and some one calling me “negro” is only understood in the context spoken. We are a mix colored people, just like Jews are. It’s only one human race so discrimination could factually emerge from a inferiority complex in the mind of the listener or a superiority complex by the speaker. Either way: there’s a huge difference between being mistreated and being free in an imperfect world. A victim mentality belongs only to those BEING victimized. If your not longer are a victim- you’re a victor/ a conqueror with much to celebrate and be thankful for. Some just love pity, regardless of success, accomplishments or just enjoying basic human dignity. The history of suffrage from our ancestors for free people should be an immense state of gratitude. May their story, educate us to prevent repeating it. “Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times” Michael Hopf Proverbs 30:8-9 8 Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, 9 lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” or lest I be poor and steal

That's not true. First it is not an "European judaism" :the practice, the laws and the liturgy is about the same for Ashkenazi, Sefardi, Mizrahi or Yemenites Jews except the pronunciation is different and some customs and marginal practices are different. This is because, along our history, rabbis from all the world have exchanged letters and travellers and delegates joined very distant communities. African, Indian communities, marranos from the Latin countries have been isolated and of course they have evolved differently than the other Jews. Now that these "Lost Jewries" have regain contact with the rest of the Jews they have the choice between keeping their own traditions and joining themselves to the majority. Of course most of them, choose to adopt the mainstream Judaism for the future of their children, so they will be able to marry a Jew from any origin. But, they also keep they distinctive festivals and their respect for their former religious leaders. In Israel Sigd (the main Ethiopian holiday) is a national celebration, Israeli president address his wishes to the Ethiopian community. Kessim (Ethiopian priests) are paid by the government like any rabbi. To my sorrow, some Israeli are racists, but as someone said above, there is a big difference between suffering illegal prejudice from stupid people and being killed by haters with the complicity of the police. Nowadays Ethiopians succeeded in art, politics, science and medicine. Israeli society has still a long way to go to reach a total equality of chances, but a lot has been done in 30 years.

The discrimination of Falashas in Ethiopia may be true before but now we have a secular government so no religion is discriminated in fact it is the orthodox Christians who are being persecuted. They're exposing themselves to the potential to be helped. They're doing their best to survive despite the persecution: life does not exist inside of fear. To be free, you have to do what is necessary- not hide forever and cower. Take a footnote from all of the nations worldwide that have been effected by a form of subjugation/colonization and managed to escape the negativity and abuse they experienced without fighting their colonizers off through genocide. Take a look at the ones that are still suffering (like American nations, for example) and look at what they've tried to get their freedom. That context can give you some ideas of where to start thinking from.

@amsalebumbaugh4956 Жыл бұрын
You know sometimes the victim mentality is used by those from outside to divide us. It’s unfortunate there is discrimination by anybody towards anyone. Look how Ethiopian Jews are treated in Israel. There’s a lot more to all these stories than what one producer wants to highlight. This is a good story but I don’t understand what the main purpose is. Was also wondering if these people knew they were going yo be broadcasted to the whole world when they are talking about being a hidden community. 🧐

This is the best documentary about Ethiopian Jews. Thanks you very much. But I was very emotional 😢 disturbed It doesn’t matter who you are what religion you practice… no one should be treated like this. The root of Christianity is Judaism, Jesus is a descendant of King David, So where does this hate comes from my fellow Ethiopians? Which of Jesus’s disciples have killed a Jew? All of Jesus ‘s disciples were persecuted and murdered. No wonder we are going through what we are going through now in Ethiopia. May God forgive us. We need to forgive ourselves and each other try to leave in peace and harmony. We are in the last days…. Those who have ears let them hear. Read and study the New Testament it will open your eyes. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Hello my brother. In Judaism, your mother must be Jewish in order for you to be considered Jewish. In your case, you would need to undergo an Orthodox conversion. This would serve two purposes: 1.) You would learn Jewish religious, cultural and legal customs 2.) You would be fully integrated into our community. If you currently live in Ethiopia, there still should be Rabbis in Gondar and Addis Ababa who would be able to assist you.

Black jews and blonde jews nowaday are half bred jews. Many brown jews fled from mideast and migrated to various parts of the world. Intermarriages with locals created whiter and blacker jews. Some jews lost their identity and some are still maintaining jewish culture. This is used to happen in every society.
@Long-Ball-Larry Жыл бұрын
David was a redhead. His great-great-grandmother Ruth was a Moabite. So was King David a half bred? What about the Children of Moses he had with his wife Zipporah? Half-breds? You think blonde hair entered the Levante and Anatolia during the Crusades? Ancient Canaanites (including Jews/Israelites) were a mix of people from the Caucasus and local populations as DNA studies show - and were closer to other Southern-Europeans. So I guess Arabized people of the Levante who mixed with Arabs after the Arab/Islamic conquest are.... half breds? The Levante has always (and I mean since human migration started) been a hot spot for mixing, because of its unique location, being at the crossroads of three continents! Israel was controlled by empire after empire, including Hellenes/Greeks during the Seleucid empire (312-63 BC). So how "nowadays"? You know that many Greeko-Roman (women) converted at the time of the Mishna (around 190 CE.)? That's most likely where the mix of Ashkenazim is coming from. After that when Christianity became state religion in Rome ( 380 CE), it was forbidden in Christian (and Islamic) countries to convert to Judaism (including "intermarriage")- punishable by death! All that was still centuries before Arabs (all brown? - maybe some of them, like Northern Arabs not so much) conquered the Levante and the spread of Islam in the 7th century - who then mixed with the peoples they conquered, including female African slaves they brought into the Levante. Visit ashkenazijews (ends with n et) - portrayed are Ashkenazim from all over Europe - they look pretty Medditerranean to me. There are not many natural blonde Jews btw (they exist, just like blonde Lebanese women exist - are they half bred too?) - like other middle eastern women (including "Arabs") they sometimes like to dye their hair blonde though.

Right in the title I can see the confusion which is repeated often, especially in English language products. The confusion is in this case between religion and nationality, even race. Although I am no expert, it seems to me that the current Ethiopians, who profess Jewish religions, are not Jews. Not only their nationality, but even their race appears to be different.

Look, every Semitic speaking Abyssinians (Amhara & Tigre) claim to have Israeli origin. The Bete Israel or "Felashas" are not genetically different from the rest. There is no Anti-Semitism here! Because every Amharic or Tigrigna speaker considers himself as a Semite, regardless of his religion. Here is the thing, any Amhara Christian from Gonder or Shewa loves Israel, consider it as homeland of his remote ancestors. He can not hate Israeli due to his ethnic origin. But he hates "BUDA". And "Buda" is not considered as Israeli. But an "evil eyed" person. Unfortunately, most of the so called Budas happened to be crafts people. And most of the crafts people considered themselves as Bete Israel. But there are some Crafts people in southern part of the country who don't consider themselves as a Bete Israel. THUS, some people in the documentary were exaggerating and twisting some facts and claimed as if there is anti-Semitism in Ethiopia. They sensationalize the issue deliberately may be to push Israeli government into something they personally wish. Let me tell you one last thing, majority of Ethiopians who called themselves Jews are not really members of Bete Israeli. They are faking it to get out of their poor homeland hoping to enjoy better life in Israel. I don't judge them. So dear Irene dig deep. Don't trouble Israeli government with a crude data.

I See where your perhaps coming from and with all humility I can share my perception- this documentary was clearly depicting the discrimination they receive due to their faith, their STANCE against conversion to CopticIsm', and the fact that they are NOT allowed to own land whilst that which there ancestors owned was taken by those who had declared Copticism as the national religion in an effort to force them to convert, which was shown in a clip the falasha ancient compound now used for tourism falasha facade museum, so if what you state is correct, are those whose ancestors lost land, NOW allowed to own land? perhaps this being the reason they continue to be in 'craft making'(you kind of need land to grow crops) and can the Ethiopian government IF all are under same Ethiopian banner (same as the rest of the Abyssinians) and the Anti-Semitism rule is null and void, should they then be given back all the land/places that were taken from them, starting with the museum and all the areas where the Muslims invaded and inhabited (that was in the clip too)?.are they now able to purchase land freely and practice their Faith openly? That's what I saw in the documentary, it wasn't really about them being 'genetically' different but receiving an InDifference due to the way they practice THEIR FAITH and their Stance on Paganism and its practices which are ALL listed and permitted in the Same Coptic Bibles! ... Salaama.

Just because you need to find a reason for making Aliah, you don't have to make an entire people criminals Jewish persecutes. It's so sad what you are doing. For Mellenia, the Amhara people highly venerated the Jewish people, in fact, they considered themselves to be the true descendents of the israelites, as it's also deeply embedded in their culture. The sections of people who were called budah by their neighbors are present in every tribe of Ethiopia. These guys who claim to be Jewish and using modern western terms to refer to themselves are trained as such in recent decades. We have proof. You people are persecuting the real jews, to help the imposters😊
