Oh, those, chains, spinning chains! My dad worked as a roustabout on a workover rig. Every night he'd come home, hold his hands up and count " . . . 8, 9, 10, yep, a good day at work." Always got a laugh but he was serious, coming home with the same number of fingers, hands, limbs, that you started the day with.

Couple days ago I told one of the day shift guys I might be filling in on the rig that night (I'm usually a pipe tester) and he told me "you tell them you're throwing chain tonight, and that other dumbass can go catch samples." That evening, I get to the shop to meet up with the night crew, and told the derrick hand "Jake told me to tell you I'm throwing chain tonight" Next thing I know, sure enough they took me serious, and I'm throwing chain my first night on the rig lol

Fifty years ago, I studied to be an oil and gas drilling engineer and worked as an assistant driller on drilling rigs for two summers. This was in the Urals in the USSR. Then I worked as an assistant driller on a geological exploration drilling rig in Siberia for a summer. Then I built drilling rigs for oil and gas in Soviet Belarus. Even then, I realized that this work was not for me and after college I began working as a mechanic repairing equipment at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, survived the accident and still work as a mechanic repairing thermal mechanical equipment at boiler houses and power plants. All my fingers are in place. And even the hair on my head. But it is interesting and pleasant to watch how drillers work in the USA.

I threw so much spinning chain I had to learn to do it with either hand....lol Try tripping in and out of the hole fishing on a triple in the middle of nowhere in -67 below! For days!!! If you got hurt ya had to wait for a helicopter to come get ya and if the weather was bad you had no other choice but to tough it out! We got isolation pay as well but dont mean much when your sittin there busted up waiting for the weather to clear. My shift was 3 weeks in and 1 week off working 12 hour shifts. We were tough as nails and strong as bulls! All the work was done by hand/manpower. No loaders, excavators or backhoes. Trenches around the rig were dug with picks and shovels and all the heavy lifting and work was done by us!!!

you will damage the face of pin by hammering it on rotary bushing. instead try hammering on rotary bushing or better still try to rotate bottom pipe by pulling it by m/up tong or b/up tong., this way slip will get released.

Right?! So what they couldn't pull up to get the Kelly bushing in? If you're getting stuck like that then add more mud/give circulation a little more time.

@@larryrodriguez1977 i meant try to rotate by m/up or b/off tong (pull meant tong line pull not drawworks pull)

Better yet, dope the slips. He eventually doped the bushing, but if it’s wet, that probably ended up going over the shaker.

I broke out back in 2011 on an old kelly rig too, fbdc 19 i was the motor man but did plenty of chain throwing and for them damn slips use chalk on the back to displace water then put dope so it’ll grip on the chalk.

Yes, it's called a drill pipe screen. Used when you drill with bottom hole tools like a survey tool & down hole motor.
