Thank you for showing this, I was going to try the Harry R's battered sausage and now thanks to you, I won't bother. A heads up to you, and maybe some of your subscribers. I noticed you opened the door of your bench top oven for quite an extended time whilst placing the sausage, and then at a later stage again opened the door for the second sausage. You pre-heated the oven and then lost about 30 to 40 degrees by opening the door. Once you do this the oven temperature will not rise much above the temp that existed after closing the door. Then opening it again the temp will drop not so much as the first drop, but will be less than required. I discovered this after purchasing an Oven Thermometer and was aghast at the amount that the oven temp dropped. I now heat my oven to 230+ which will usually drop to 190/200 after inserting the food. I then drop it to 180 which is what I usually cook at.

Gareth. When you first put those two sausages on the plate next to each other, my wife said they reminded her of the difference between the man she always wanted, and the man that she got! I wonder what she meant? And she also laughed out loud when you said towards the end of this video “If you’d like more pork in your sausage…” Being serious though, I’ve never been a fan of ANY Harry Ramsden branded products in the shops - I’ve alway found them disappointing - and to be honest, their restaurants have gone downhill of late too! We recently dined at their place in Bournemouth. Their food was expensive, not very well cooked or presented, and portion sizes were piddly! They always USED to be so good!! Oh well! Thanks yet again for the review on these matey, but based on your conclusions I think I’ll stick to the ones from my local chippy which are the BK’s!!! 👍🏻 Regards, Dave

The old original Harry Ramsdens was sold off lock stock and barrel several years ago to a catering company or consortium of companies that didn’t care about the quality of the product or what the name was known for. Within a short period the biggest chip ‘ole had been run into the ground and with sales plummeting and the name heading down the gutter the consortium decided to cut their losses and sold off the original property, just keeping the original name and using it to sell poor quality products via supermarkets and franchises in all sort of locations including overseas and unlikely locations such as Hong Kong and Manchester Airport and several seaside locations as well. Funny thing is that the company that bought the original site kept it as a fish restaurant and it is now their third location IRC’s. They are called The Weatherby Whaler group and while they don’t get the long lines of customers like Harry’s used to snaking out of the door and across the front of the building and down the steps at the side of the building, they are still more popular than the consortium ended up just before selling off the site.

I used to love Saveloy and Chips when I was a kid. Around a year ago I bought a battered sav, and although it was nice it just wasn't the same. A battered sausage is only as good as the sausage being used. As for the Harry Ramsden food products? Let's face it, you are paying for his name more than the quality. And yes, I agree with the replies that say battered sausages should be deep-fried using a wet batter mix and certainly not frozen. A really good chippie to me is a sacred place and I stay well away from chip shops that also do pizza, Southern fried chicken and kebabs. Chip shops, Pie and Eel cafés are part of British food history and is sad to see them slowly disappearing.

I lived in Lincolnshire for a bit and I know their sausages are quite flavoursome (not that i am that keen) but these were totally devoid of taste. Hi Mr Bald, re the Pork content. Harry's have 76% sausage content of which 56% is Pork. Which means that the total Pork content of the whole thing (including batter etc) is 42% The Ballineen has 55% sausage content of which 60% is Pork. Which means that the total Pork content of the whole thing is only 33%, far less than Harry's. P.S If you let Harry's defrost, you could also deep fry them. I let most frozen foods defrost, especially chips before deep-frying, and the result is far better due to the oil not being cooled down as much as frozen food does.

Unfortunately frozen take away style meals rarely compare favourably with the real thing. That's not to say a meal could not be made out of these, like adding a few baked beans crispy chips etc just something to help them along. I will say mind in the age of the healthy air fryer in place of the lard filled chip pan there has to be some price to pay in the way of flavour, it is what makes the chippy taste so good :))).

I've never heard of battered pork sausage before. Sounds very American carnival fair type thing, like a deep fried candy bar. I'm in Newfoundland, Canada btw.
