In the states, the word "Doner" (though add anothe N) was the name of a groug of pioneers who, in the 1870's, became lost and snowed in, while traveling westward. They had to result to cannibalism in order to survive. So my first thought when seeing your meal was: "I hope that is chicken!"

This was a great review Gareth. It was obvious you liked it a lot. I would dispute calling it a "chicken doner kebab" though. A "doner kebab" is made from a mix of meats, usually lamb, beef and chicken. What you tried is just called a "chicken kebab" the main difference is that a doner kebab is cooked on a rotisserie and is grilled. Whereas a chicken kebab has the meat cooked on a flat top griddle. I love them all. My favourite sauce on a chicken kebab is a lemon sauce. My go to sauce for a doner has to be a hot chilli sauce. Although I'm not really a salad lover? It is really a must to have shredded cabbage, raw onion, tomatoes and cucumber. I always get a tub of tzatziki as a dipping sauce. I like the sauce made with dill rather than mint as the mint is a bit overpowering for my taste. Going back to my youth? In the 60's you had a few pints and then went for an Indian. 🍻🍻🍲🍲. In the 70's you had a few pints and then went for a Chinese 🍻🍻 🥡🥡. In the 80's and 90's in Germany you had a LOT of pints, (well it WAS about 33p a pint in the NAAFI or in the mess 👍👍), and went for a gyros 🍺🍺🍺🍺🌮🌮and now it's a couple of pints and a kebab. 🍻 🥙🥙. Keep up your great reviews Mr G because in this day and age finding decent meals at a decent price is your expertise and those of us who follow your reviews on KZbin respect what you are doing. 👍👍👍👍.

@@Kim-Jong-Un-4 Yeah they are in some places, but that's not normal in a proper kebab shop. Chicken is used alongside lamb and beef for a doner, sometimes pork is added, but not in a Halal kebab shop. Just as some kebab shops use skewered mincemeat for their doner kebabs, that is not authentic. Many places also claim to make Gyros. But if you have had a real Gyros compared to a British Gyros you would understand the difference. It would be easier to say that Gyros is made from thin layers of meat cooked on a rotisserie and carved off fresh for each serving, giving it a similar look to "burnt ends" and of course it's special mix of herbs. Doner meat is also made from different meats and usually minced. It is also cooked on a rotisserie, but is shaved off and kept in a bain marie to stop it from burning up and going too dry. There isn't really a chicken doner kebab, it is just a chicken kebab with salad.

Have you ever had a kebab? They come in a variety of forms. Kebabs consist of cut up or ground meat, sometimes with vegetables and various other accompaniments according to the specific recipe. Although kebabs are typically cooked on a skewer over a fire, some kebab dishes are oven-baked in a pan, or prepared as a stew such as Tas kebab (also tas kebap or tas kebabı) a Turkish meat stew. What accompaniments or bread is used is irrelevant. "Kebab" just means roasted meat.

We have that Kebab meat here in Oz. Lamb as well. A wrap, home made garlic and yoghurt and salad.. Voila a Yiros. Don't forget to heat the wrap. Or just go out and buy one but in Oz $17au..at least! 🙏🇦🇺

Having lived in Lancashire for a number of years on and off we used to call these bread rolls "Baps" or "Barm Cakes". Oven Bottom refers to how they were traditionally cooked when they were usually done in a bakers at the end of days bake where leftover dough was shaped and put in the bottom of the oven to cook in the residual heat as the ovens cooled.

Iv tried it gaz . Only got one to try . Very good , i added salad stuff etc, put it in pitta bread , then made a big mistake , i added the red sauce🥵! That spoilt it ! The meat looks lovely and plenty of it to fill two of those delicious Sheldon's rolls. They're generous with the sauce n mayo too. Yes, the own brand pickles and chutneys are all delicious in my experience and a bit cheaper too. That goes for all the big stores. Sainsbury's range is excellent and Tesco.

If you have flour, (ideally gram flower but fine with plain) as a little oil, add enough water to make into a dough... Roll a lump fat and fry it in a screaming hot dry frying pan and cook on both sides for 10 seconds ish. For better results for your flat bread, add some nigella seeds. The seeds last forever and can be used when ever you need a flat bread. They do go hard in about a hour, so cook to serve.

@@PamelaD963 Let me know how you get on with them. Basic flat bread is just flower and water. Leaving your dough for a half hour before rolling gets you more of those nice puffed up black bits. The dough also lasts a few days sealed in a fridge.

Couldn't agree more! Raw onion really adds to the flavour. And cooked onion too. But onion is great. Onion comes from the same family as garlic. And it has great anti parasitic / anti biotic properties. Let's face it Gareth. A lot of traditional garnishes are age old remedies for what ails you. Every country has traditional anti inflammatory, anti biotic and anti parasitic foods. It's built into every culture.

Would have course have to question the price of this it is after all a bit of chicken but given that apparently there are McVitie's digestives on sale at £5+ a packet the chicken is maybe not as bad as it seems. Teacakes in Yorkshire with or without currants. And a full breakfast in a Flatcake, not that I could eat one nowadays but if you get chance grab one :). About £4 and comes with bacon, sausage, egg, tomato, beans, spam, all dependant on each cafe.
