Baldur’s Gate 3 is a deep sandbox game with an overwhelming amount of systems at play. If you’re familiar with DnD or have been playing the early access build help us out in the comments below. In this video, we’re going over the most important things to understand early in the game.
In no particular order, we’re going to give you a baseline on how this game views you as a player whether you be a wizard, warlock, bard, or any number of races or party compositions. Spoilers, everything can and will kill you if you don’t size up situations ahead of time. We’ll teach you the importance of exploring areas with the right party member first such as going into dangerous animal caves with your Druid up front or holy sites with your Cleric. We’re covering how to prepare for fights including when to use long rests, short rests, or just call it a day and head back to camp. We’re covering how to set up a fight before it even begins by going undetected and leading off with AOE attacks, bombs, or sneaking for bonus damage. We’re covering how to use the environment to your advantage including mud, spider webs, and even doors. You can use old fashion explosive barrels as well as makeshift weapons. Then we’ll cover vital and often overlooked mechanics like how to shove, jump, disengage, or even throw your friends. There are many other tips to cover like swapping to non-lethal combat in morally grey situations.

Jump and shove aren’t just available at the end of turn, they’re available whenever you want to use them. That’s super important as you can shove someone away as and then reposition without fear of counterattack

I’ve been a 5e DM for 10 years, and I’m going to break the game for you, using a little two word phrase: Action Economy. Simply put, the side that utilizes their actions the most to damage and CC targets is often the winner. It is often better to use an action to do damage, and focus enemies out of the fight, than it is spreading damage around.

There is a fight I've come across where there's an enemy who uses illusions that if you don't hit them can cast spells and do damage to you. I got full party wiped by its shades casting hold person on my entire party then doing ooga booga damage

To add further context, say your party has been wiped. It’s your PC versus on goblin, and you’re both very low. You don’t want to die so you choose to heal yourself with your action, 1d8. You only heal for 5. The goblin then attacks you with a scimitar, 1d6, he rolls a 5, plus his dex modifier and kills you. It would’ve been much better for you to have attacked, possibly killing the goblin,, then risking the rolls. In the example of hold person, you’ve eliminated that enemy entirely from the fight, their action economy is now zero (or one less) and you still maintain all your actions to deal damage. This is very important against enemies who multi attack. Another example, for the stupidest cantrip in the game: true strike. Why waste a turn getting the opportunity to roll an attack (2d20 to hit) when you could just spend both of those turns attacking (also 2d20) but with the chance to deal damage twice instead of only once?

Long rests might totally change the course of timed quests that you may have. Remember, in BG3, time doesn't stop for you to long rest.

I remember coming across someone who was downed on the ground surrounded by 2 ppl. Decided to long rest in case a battle happened for some reason....the person who was down died in the time it took me to long rest 🤣 makes sense but u never know with games. I love it.

I’m still pretty early on, but I’ve had a lot of fun using 2 rogues in fights. I rolled a rogue for my main character and ended up keeping Astarion in my party after I picked him up. I specced one as a Thief and the other as an Assassin, the Assassin gets to high ground and stealths, the Thief draws aggro and can kite the enemies for a few turns using the extra bonus action for an extra dash, then can duck out of sight and stealth. Meanwhile, the Assassin does ranged sneak attacks and re-stealths. Repeat until dead. You always have the option to double dash away and hide if it goes sour. It’s probably far from optimal, but it’s been really fun.

Always use your surroundings to your advantage, something as small as a 2 story drop can turn an unwinnable situation into easy baby mode when combined with something like a "thunderwave" spell or a void bulb.

The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is - whichever is greater - it obtains a difference or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position that it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is is now the position that it wasn't, and if follows that the position that it was is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation. The variation being the difference between where the missile is and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows: Because a variation has modified some of the information that the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it know where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice versa. And by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

I find myself using magic missile a lot with my sorcerer, because it can help to target so many enemies, but just recently I found that this was keeping me from experimenting with different combinations. Once I learned that lesson, I found myself stacking explosive barrels, laying grease, and luring enemies into an area where I could one shot them with a chain reaction of explosives! So fun! Experiment, you won’t regret it.

Good advice for new players to the RPG realm and D&D ruleset. For veteran players, this game is common knowledge and not that hard to understand. As long as you scout, prepare and plan ahead, use the high ground when possible, know when to fight and when to run, learn to avoid a certain encounter altogether by using charm, charisma and/or intimidation, constantly save, constantly upgrade your gear, weapons and spells, constantly re-arrange your Parties inventory, take full rests after any major fight, explore every nook and cranny and loot everything, as you can always sell off all the items not needed, as every bit of gold is precious. Always have a wall balanced Party, which would be a Fighter, a Rogue, a Mage and a Cleric in most cases. Anyway, save often and remember that practice makes perfect, even for veteran players, as there will always be ambushes and other nasty surprises, when exploring the unknown. Enjoy your D&D chess matches!

Great advice but sticking through all or even most of the game with a fighter - rogue - mage - cleric isn't nessasary. I mix my party up often and I think it's a good thing for everyone to do, explore your characters and find what works best for you. My current party is made up of a Paladin - Warlock - Barbarian - Cleric. There's a lot of different comps that can work very well. As long you fill the following roles you'll have no issues DMG dealing melee - DMG dealing ranged - Utility - Support/Healer. There is so many different builds that you could make almost any class combo work.

Instead of using a potion normally, gather your whole party around and throw the potion at the ground. It will do an aoe heal for the whole party! Game changer.

I toggled the "end turn" button to hold down on the settings. I was forever tapping Y by mistake and wasting a valuable turn. I also love setting area traps of flammable or acidic liquids if I can see trouble ahead. I also send all of my teams lock picks and Disarm trap sets to my rogue to free up space in other inventories.

4:10 instead of jumping straight into combat, just enter turn base and itll pause the timer so u can cast more things before hand, and even more special cases for certain classes, youll be able to cause surprise status to all enemies when u do first hit from stealth and also not have to expend an action movement

Best tip is to start using turn based mode for pre fight buffs, summons, stealing and pretty much anything where time is not on your side. Turn based mode gives you all the time in the world to complete an action and in a game where the action economy is the difference between success and failure, having as much time as you need to do an action changes the way encounters play out in the game. Also things that are ritual spells that will use a valuable spell slot if used in combat do not use a spell slot if used out of combat. This also brings me to the second best tip....read the tooltip for everything! Since this game is based on a table top RPG the rulebook has some grey areas where you can and should use or at the least attempt to use the openess of the rulebook to your advantage. Especially if you are new to DnD, the tooltip is written alot like the rulebook and is vague in places to encourage you to try out new combos and tactics. The game has tons of unique synergies and often times the best way to do something is the way you can think of doing it. Lastly, consider your party as you would consider one cohesive character, often times you will be relying on one character or another who has high skill or proficiency in something and you will be using multiple characters in setting up a spell or damage dealing combo as opposed to dealing out huge amounts of damage with every character or one specific character. This is because every character is working on a fixed amount of action(s), bonus actions, reactions and movement. Its important to think of characters based on their role and what value they bring to a party and sometimes that value is not just dps. That is not to say that certain character or roles are not capable of being a high tier damage dealer in combat, but to prepare you for the fact that you may not want to try and make a jack of all trades type character because this game places a heavy emphasis on the ROLE aspect of the role player game genre. Its much better in BG3 to be a master of 1 or 2 things per character than try to make one character who does 10 things, because they will most certainly not be very good at all 10 things.

While the gameplay in the combat in this isn’t at all like the previous Baldurs Gates, the strength of magic seems to be similar. Well, I’ll have to see how much more I can unlock, as there was an insane amount of spells in BG2, you would not have an easy time beating that game without some good casters. It’s all part of the strategy, having a cleric and someone that can cast more offensive spells is SUPER useful. I find myself using sleep a lot more often in this game (at least the earlier parts), as well as magic missile (although I used that before in the other games, the way it’s used here is interesting, where you pick multiple targets).

Larain Studios have said they going to patch Karmic Dice 😝 To my knowledge I am not 💯 % sure. But my advice is to turn that setting off. Because as the other two have stated when I used the setting the enemies never missed an attack roll. I always missed and they can hit anyone in your party multiple times before you even have a chance to attack 😡 In some cases they can do 400 % damage in a single turn. Even if they said they've fixed Karmic Dice 😝 I still wouldn't take the risk.

A good note for everyone is that non-lethal is bugged, that is, even if you knock someone out, the game behaves like you killed them. When you long rest, their bodies will disappear. just a heads up

SPOILERS!!! ................the ogre's in the goblin village. diplo them. they give you a horn you can use one time to call on them to help you. makes all the difference in that dang phase spider fight.

_"Use all resources! It can all be regained after the fight"_ Not to my knowledge. Maybe I don't remember how generous the game is with long rests but, usually, you should only count on short rest being able to get back certain class features. You only get two of those per long rests and your next long rest might not be for a while depending on your location. At the very least, a long rest expends camp supplies and those aren't an infinite resource. As such, don't use all of shadowhearts spells during your first fight of the day. Unless someone fall unconscious, it might be smarter for someone like shadowheart to save her cure wounds for after the fight so she can use her actions during the fight for dealing damage with a weapon or cantrip. Pay attention to what classes are in you party and what features they gain back when. Wyll is a warlock so you can count on him getting all his spells back on a short rest whereas Gale the wizard may only get a few of them back on a short rest and only once per day. I'm only 2hours in to the game and had about 25 hours of early access back in the early patches, but I doubt the game has drastically changed in this regard.

Normally I hate re-starting over and over again in most RPG'S because each time I restarted a game say like Skyrim. I felt the fatigue start to set in. But during the EA you couldn't re-spec so, it was your only option. But one thing I didn't realize at first but I did learn later 😜 I was getting better at playing the game 😆 Now your probably thinking to yourselves "well duh!" But this is unforgiving CRPG with no hand hold what so ever. So before if, I encountered say a Grease spell I, would just walk through it. But now I jump over it. Or when I encounter War Drums I immediately make sure to destroy them, etc... basically I was learning strategies vs. the game 😛

This further reinforces my uncertainty whether i'll really enjoy the game. I'm generally a completionist kind of player in games, where i try to do 90% of the accessible content that has meaningful reason to be done, and then just. Drop the game and move to another. The idea of restarting just sounds dreadful even if i very well know it would be drastically different. I just hope i'm not too dumb and learn the game quickly, even if i'm pretty much entirely new to both CRPGs and DND. I'm enjoy it enough so far, but the immensely steep learning curve is really tough to deal with. Even if i'm inclined to brag that i haven't had my entire party killed yet in the 5 or so hours of playing, tho i have gotten close.

@@Verchiel_ Good For You Because At First There is a Steep Learning Curve but once you figure out that curve you should be good. In the full release you can respec your character and Larian is now working on a way to be able to change your appearance. There is no shame in playing the game on explorer Mode to start with, and then when you start to get the hang of it? Switch it back to the normal difficulty 😜 Eventually you've luck with run out and you're eventually get your entire party killed, it's like any From Software Game. It's a part of learning the game 🎯 Hand in There, You'll Figure out stuff because it's part of let the game. Just remember to save often and turn off Karmic Dice 😆 Enjoy the game, Fellow Baldurarian 🙂

And be sure to set certain reactions to ask before activating. Opportunity attack is usually fine to leave on auto, but Hellish Rebuke uses a lvl 2 spell slot so you'll want to use that one wisely.

Wait you lash out everything in a fight? I always conserve spell slots for the big fight, as most fights are very easy, so my spell caster just use cantrips instead of spells. I’m still in act 1 but my two main damage output are assassin and fighter

AC scores seem to be generally lower than I was used to in earlier incarnations of D&D. There also seem to be fewer items like rings of protection to improve AC. I'm not sure how this stacks up against attack bonuses that improve with each level. What is the best way to improve AC and avoid getting hit so often?

To add a point to the video- I would argue save scumming outside of combat is a bad idea. Obviously, the video is on combat, but there's no caveat in the video. Some of the fails put you in some hilarious positions reloading a failed dice roll, just ensuring you're missing good content. Treat the game like a game of d&d. You won't regret it. :)

Sadly had to replay the same combat sequence 3 times due to 2 crashes a minute afterwards. Spamming f5 sińce then. Also the autosaves are bad, why would it not save immidietly after the fight is over? Game needs some fixing.

Just started the game, and it's hard to grasp how it goes. It's just overwhelming. I just am 45 mins in and just left the ship, and get killed as soon i go on route no matter what i do. There are 3 enemies that all hit me and her. And i need to go through it. I don't geet why they made it so hard from the beginning.

Good tips like treating each fight as your last and not hesitating to use potions/scrolls/bombs. However, isnt that applicable just for tactician difficulty? When you hover over an item or skill and get the pop-up description, at the bottom it will tell you if using the item or skill is an action or a bonus action. If you start a fight by using an action (not a bonus action), it will count for the action of that player's turn. For example, you sneak attack an enemy and a fight starts, you've used that character's action for their turn. Throwing an item counts as an action unless it says otherwise. So if you did a sneak attack, that character can't throw anything until their next turn.

No matter what I do, I'm constantly getting creamed in fights. My characters constantly miss while enemies attack 2-3 times and wiping them out in three hits. Am I doing something wrong? The game is amazing but the unfair combat system is what is ruining it for me.

Don't fight enemies that are much stronger than you and focus on killing a single enemy per turn instead of spreading damage out.

If you use a controller it defaults to that. I’m playing on my pc with ps5 l/Xbox controller and plays like that. They did a great job!

I just wanna know why Astarion seems to always be at a disadvantage… I can never sneak attack melee or bow. Even if a team member is standing right on top of them. I don’t get it I’m so frustrated

You probably equipped a piece of medium armor. Rogues are not proficient and if any class is wearing armor they don’t have proficiency in, they lose a lot of their abilities and may always have disadvantage on attacks.

I think that Monks aren't as powerful in BG3 as they are in D&D. My Monk Dwarf turned into a Multiclass off Monk and Druid focusing on Circle of spores. He's much better now

i haven't ran into that situation yet but i think you can also partially long rest without full supplies so you at least get some stuff back ( i think half spell slots back for example), explore more and loot everything you can for more camp supplies.

Use left alt in new areas to see what can be picked up. Pick up everything, sell what u can

checking every crate/picking stuff up using alt/R stick press, pick pocketing helps (you have to be sneaking to pick pocket via right clicking on a non party member) -- and if you're really having trouble killing the Druid chick to trigger Druid/Teiflings fighting each other will leave you w/ the whole grove's worth of dead bodies and crates to pick through to get over 1k gold when you sell everything not useful to the goblin camp merchant.

You can do 1d14 is anywhere if 1-14 damage/roll. Like guidance adds a 1d4 so you can get a +1 up to +4 roll on let’s say picking a lock. Ie: you roll the dice, and then take that number and add 1,2,3, or 4 to it (rng of course). Not sure why they use a D but that’s what I’ve noticed

It's the board roleplaying game Dungeons and Dragons adapted to PC gaming in a really good way. Great RPG, if you're into those this is a good game to pick up

Its about the story, the world, the characters and roleplaying a character. Its a lot about choice and consequence and as much player freedom as possible. I think the turn based combat is great, but the main focuss is the story and role playing.

That's how they generate more of their kind - the worm will transform you (ceremorphosis) into a mindflayer.
