I'm new around here, and what I love about this podcast is how open-minded and genuinely excited Danny seems to be towards exposing himself to new gaming experiences. He is receptive and respectful in listening to Jeremy talk about CRPGs and the appeal of them, and shows genuine interest in learning more and keeping an open mind. I watched the Heroes of Might & Magic 3 retrospective video as well, and that gave off similar vibes too. What a great crew you guys have assembled for thoughtful, incisive discussion. Kudos.

I've been with Larian from the beginning. It's amazing where they are from then to now. They make games you want to play. No loot boxes, no ingame store, just $60 out the door. Let all other devs bow to their greatness.

I've heard a lot of people deep in the games industry saying "I never played BG1 or 2, but I'm loving 3." It's interesting as someone who has played the shit out of both of them, and has even finished them both again since the Enhanced Editions came out. As someone who grew up with them I assumed they were just formative games for everyone in the industry.

Also, this past week has been a beautiful BG3 blur. I initially bounced off of Divinity Original Sin 2 pretty hard. Couldn't even leave the damn "tutorial" island area, lol, but after plenty of walkthroughs, I eventually started to understand how to approach games like this. So much I could say about DOS2, but 5-6 playthrus later, it's rightfully earned a place in my top 10, and BG3 is already en route to the top 5. Can't recommend these games enough - Larian Studios is a force to be reckoned with.

With regard to the character creation. I also have one child, a daughter, but haven't done the character creation with my daughter in mind. Somehow my gaming life has been a bit compartmentalized from me as a parent. My daughter does also really like games and gaming and we do really enjoy coop gaming together. Still the rest of my life doesn't really bleed into gaming for some reason. I don't have a good explanation for that though.

I was really wary of D&D in turn based, as the actual table top game would be horribly slow and repetitive, but I loved DOS2. You've pretty much sold me on it.

Have played guitar for over 20 years and change my strings about once every fortnight. It's... really not that hard to do. Any guitarist worth their salt can maintain their own rig if need be. That's my opinion at least, you're free to hold your own

If you fancy another DnD style old school PC game, try Dark and Darker. An excellent dungeon crawling PvPvE looting extraction game. A great experience, for sure.

My friend and I also just recently finished a coop runthrough of Divinity: Original Sin 2. It's fun, but you really need to just play it on low difficulty and just fuck around I think.

wow I really hope Bg3 is the gateway for a lot of these broader 'games media' type people to go back and check out Divinity, Pathfinder or Pillars type games. So so so so often the stereotype is that young people don't want story in games or deep RPG systems but this week of podcasts has shown me its basically 70% of games media 35-50 are also years beyond ever caring about these types of games pre-BG3's release, really eye opening

The story is scary fantastic, the difficulty toward your choice is getting harder and harder, toward the last act i truly feel like the world is against us and the problem just getting more and more out of hand. Its very hard to know for sure who is my real allies, which one is the "right" choice, because the game dont spoil you with obvious clues. Everyone act so good and present their point so convincingly that you cant know their real intention easily.

Antstream selling a lifetime subscription to a service that exclusively relies on streaming low latency video all the time is the biggest red flag for a service I've ever seen. It's even more baffling that the service only works on devices that could natively run the games better than the remote emulation. I think it's more like DoorDash but they only hire professional racecar drivers to exclusively deliver Taco Bell in Sherman tanks.

I can't wait to play BG3 on PS5. It's just me maybe but it felt a bit too much enthusiastic after just a couple dozen hours. Honestly I enjoyed the BG3 segment, but it kinda made me question if this is sponsored somehow. I wouldn't mind necessarily, but in that case it should be explicit. But maybe it's just me. In any case I love NoClip work!

Holy Fuck, Danny. Did you start playing BG3 without even touching Div2. For the job alone, you need to see how much of what makes BG3 great was already in Div 1 & 2. You shoukd play an hour or 2 of it, just to know when Larian was implementing these systems.

I completely with Jeremy’s take on what makes the world building of Baldurs Gate special compared to something like DOS. Those dark, alien elements of the world completely hooked me and are so much more appealing to me than a standard high fantasy hero’s journey that is seen in most rpgs. I love how a central plot element is this desperation and body horror that comes from having a brain parasite that will mutilate your body to take it over as part of its normal life cycle.

BG3 has a lot of gameplay elements that remind me of immersive sims. One thing that impressed me was that I found these statues that you need to turn to open a secret passage but one of them requires (I believe) an athletics check to turn because it’s turning mechanism is rusted over and gets stuck. I had all my party try their hand at it but none of them could pass the check so I didn’t know what to do but felt there had to be some work around to it. I then decided to throw a grease bottle on it to lubricate the gears and it just worked like a charm, and that skinny twink Astarion was able to rotate the statue with ease. It was at that point that how immense the scope and options of the gameplay are became truly apparent to me. The world seems to always behave believably and if you think of a solution that would probably work in the real world, then it will probably work in the game too. It also makes me wonder what other solutions are there for that particular puzzle or other tricks people have done to solve the same problems I have run into.

@@triblex305 yeah I tried to find info about it online but it was early enough that I wasn’t able to actually find anyone talk about it so I came up with it after remembering i had grease bottles and that big machinery uses oil based lubricants to function properly. I was so happy when it worked!
