Baldwin IV: The Leper King | Tooky History

Baldwin IV was the king of Jerusalem back when Saladin wanted to conquer it.

Baldwin was just a kid when it was found out he was leprous. He was 13 when he was crowned, but his fate was sealed and his sister’s son was successor to the throne. During this time, Muslim general Saladin wanted to retain the city of Jerusalem from the crusaders.
Saladin’s forces started raiding towards the city of Ascalon with the ambition of capturing it and preparing for another offence. Baldwin marched out with less than 400 knights and reached Ascalon before Saladin.
Figuring out that Baldwin was now trapped and surrounded in Ascalon, Saladin left Baldwin and continued marching straight onto a defenseless Jerusalem. Baldwin went after Saladin and defeated him.
His brother-in-law took over the command once Baldwin was too sick, but he was no match for Saladin, which forced Baldwin to get carried over on the battlefield. Hearing Baldwin was about to come, Saladin withdrew his army and didn’t attack until Baldwin died, aged 24.

He was struck with terminal illness in the prime of his life, an illness that prevented him from fathering a child, and yet he still decided to do everything in his power to secure a future for his Kingdom. A blind, frail, leprous child managed to beat one of the most deadly generals in the world.

Saladin is not one of the greatest generals of all time according to historians, it's Victorian Era propaganda, just like portraying Richard I as a hero of England. He was however a great leader, uniting many Muslims under his banner. History schlol books haven't changed in about 150 years. Troy was discovered in 1870, yet it's still writen in history books the it didn't exist and the Illiad was entirely fictional. One of the greatest generals of history, beat the rising ottoman threat back, liberated Serbia for a decade and almost Contantinople and won the greatest battle for Hungary, called the Battle of Belgrade, where the outnumbered crusader army managed to take over the most elite janissary forces and stop the ottoman conquers in Europe for 50 years. Oh, and one of his sons, Mathias Corvin became a king... One of the greatest.

There is certain controversy about the victory of Baldwin in MontGisard, some say that the Templars were the ones that really won the battle, a force 150 templars knigths and 150 templar sargents ambushed Saladin, Baldwin arrived and attacked saladin from behind, with this last straw, Saladin army was routed. Actually most of the casualties in Saladin army (80% rate of casualties) were from fleeing to Egipt.

Saladin wasn't a particularly great general. He was a good diplomat, and was lucky to face some incompetents like Gerard de Ridefort and Guy de Lusignan. Once competent general Richard the Lionheart showed up, Saladin was beaten badly in every engagement, and then died shortly after Richard left to deal with problems created in Europe by Philip Augustus and his own brother John.
