In this episode Dennis takes a look at a couple of very special Baldwin Motion Vettes. Nothing expresses the time period quite like a Baldwin Motion Vette. First up is the GT, with a very Euro style, with the covered headlights and flares for this "luxury touring car", along with the trademark Baldwin Motion striping. But don't let that fool you. It's powered by a massive 513 HP 454 engine.
If that wasn't enough, we take a spin in a one-of-a-kind Maco Shark Vette. Like it's namesake, it is as beautiful as it is powerful. And again, the modifications truly fit this corvette and express this period in american muscle like no other. The combination of Maco Shark and Corvette really makes sense.

There was a green 69 that sat in a garage for years in Philly after the owner had a mechanical problem, believe a clutch and he parked it. Me and everyone drove past that spot a thousand times and never knew it was there.

Never noticed; the accentuated Mako Shark front fenders makes the front wheels look too small. @3:58 "Strengthen the crank" must mean replacing it? Never heard of strengthening a crank before. Great history. Thanks!

I had a good friend once. He had a 66 Chevelle Malibu black and white top. 283 had in it when he got it. His brother wrecked the gorgeous 68 Experimental Grand Prix. And rebuilt the 428 put it in a 75 trans Am first kept blowing the rear ends out. Then they dropped it into the Malibu.😮 Indy profile 50s on the back 70s on the front and what I think set this incredible engine up was the big fly air cleaner. I've never called them that. Look more like a wasp nest. Car would ride wheelies

Would be awesome to relate the crazy history of that yellow beauty from the fire in Rosen's parking to MGM canonball run but got left on cutting room floor!! it took Rosen 20 years to locate this one which was his favorite finally found it in rear of MGM studio! So the Bianci bros. in N.J. restored it to original 1970 specs.! and why Rosen didnt keep it I dont know!!!!🤣

I worked at GM Design Staff at the GM Technical Center in Warren,Michigan. Bill Mitchell was Vice President of General Motors Design Staff. ( Called GM Stying at the time. He had the name changrd to GM Design Staff.) Mr. Mitchell went deep sea fishing while in Miami. He caught caught a Mako Shark of a good size. He had a large portion of the shark mounted and he h ad it hung on a wall in his office. He got the idea to do an advanced xsperimental concept show car and called it "The Mako Shark" as he wanted the concept to resemble the actual Mako that hung in office. Once the car was done he wanted it painted to look like the his fish he caught. Ed K...was one of the best show car painters in the country if not the best. Ed tried 3 times to paint the X car to look like the shark Mitchell caught and he ckuld not match it. So one night he got a few guys and went to Bill Mitchell's office and took the Mako off the wall. Took it down to the paint sbop and painted the fish to match the car. Returned the shark and hung it back on the wall. Mitchell never knew what Ed Had done.

"Baldwin-Motion" is a commonly used misnomer. Joel Rosen was "Mr Motion." He would modify cars in his shop. To have a BALDWIN-Motion Corvette was to have a Motion prepped Corvette, sold on a new MSO through Baldwin Chevrolet, Baldwin Long Island, N.Y. The ONLY Baldwin-Motion Corvette ever produced with an automatic transmission was Joel's 1969 personal prototype. He built it without the later known "slit" taillights. It was conceived so he and his wife could carry their dogs in the back. 10 Baldwin-Motion Corvettes were built, discounting the prototype. 9 were delivered, as one burned pre-delivery. 11.5 seconds was the guarantee. This is a nice Corvette, but NOT a Baldwin-Motion car. It does appear to have Motion cues. Those could be bought without a car being sold through Baldwin.

Sorry, Joel did NOT build the body from the "original Mako Shark-II" molds. He made a deal with fiberglass body kit maker John Sylva to pull molds from SYLVA's interpretation of the Mako Shark-II that he was selling as the "MaCo Shark. ("Mako", spelled with a "C" instead of a "k") The reason the Mako Shark-II show car wasn't the '68 Corvette was that it didn't work as a "production" car. regardless, the Motion Maco is still an interesting Corvette.

As long as I can remember Mako has always been spelled with a "K" which: leads me to believe that this car is a knock off. Baldwin Chevrolet would not put a typo on one of their cars. I remember walking down Sunrise Highway and seeing a 454 c.i. Vega square back. in front of the dealership.

Heres where two minutes of google research saves one embarrassment. Mako and Mako II, redubbed the Manta Ray, are GM concept pieces designed by Larry Shinoda (69-70 Mustang and Cougar, Stingray.) Thats it. One and one. The cars in this vid are Baldwin Motion cars. Thats the topic of the video. Ed Simonin ran Baldwin Autos, a Chevy dealership. He contracted Joel Rosin, Motion Performance, to perform performance and styling packages as promotion for the dealership. Car guys know Baldwin Motions are aftermarket tuners. Mako name is a registered trademark of GM. Maco circumvented copyright law. NO CAR EVER LEFT GM AS A BALDWIN MOTION. These were dealer installed packages. There isnt any special stamp on the vin, or anything like that. Motion was higher than average shop, offering in house mods as well as mail order parts. You could buy all the parts, body and engine and suspension, and build your own at home. To verify an actual in house build, Rosen offered, for a couple grand, to blow the dust off his old books to see if the vin ever went through his shop. Other than that, its handy to have the original slips and build sheets if you go to auction.

@@tonyrunyon375 The reason for the rear window is, on his prototype 1969 car, Joel and his wife had dogs. He opened up the area behind the seats and re-structured the rear window to accommodate the dogs. That car used stock Corvette taillights, and is the only true Motion Corvette with an automatic transmission. The Baldwin Motion cars had 4-speeds.
