I remember our first family trip to Canada in 1962 and as a kar-krazy-kid it was fun spotting all the Canadian versions of American cars, such names as Mayfair, Frontenac, Acadian, Meteor, Monarch, Fargo, Laurentian, Beaumont, Parisienne. Nice of this owner to let you drive his cars.....sure was a beautiful day.

My first car was a 1955 Ford Meteor 4 door sedan, but it was customized, no rear bumper, a rolled pan painted body colour, no front stock grill, a mesh one, painted Mustang orange, tachometer, vacuum gauge, hour meter added to the dash, floor shift to a 3 speed manual transmission, and a 272 Y block V8!

My dad had a 1954 Meteor Niagara and then a 1959 Meteor (don't know the series). The 1959 was an automatic. I was 12 then and he let me drive it a few times on some country roads. It was a gorgeous and very large car.

At the 1:49 mark that 57 Niagra ramchero is pretty rare and even rarer if it's the 58. FORD wasn't selling that many rancheros or Meteor Niagara version , so in October 1957 the Oakville plant pulled the plug on them and only 52 1958 Meteor rancheros were made of which 38 had the stock STR8 -6 and 14 with the 272 V8 . The options and colours were sparse while the interior had 3 colours and 2 trim levels .

If that Meteor ranchero at the 1:49 is a 1958, it''s rare because in October 1957 FORD pulled the plug from weak sales and they only made 54 where just 12 had the V8 . It was based on the Niagara 2 dr wagon but had a front section grill area only used on that model. Oakville made the FORD and Meteor Rachero's but with just 700 sold in 57....the 58 was doomed by the slow down and imports.

When they revived the meteor brand in 64(?) they switched to a mercury body, but ford interior and the rideau was the base model.

Meteors were sold by Merc Dealers, not Ford Dealers. My Dad bought a new '56 Meteor Wagon, a new '59 Meteor Rideau 500 ragtop and a new '63 Meteor Wagon. They came from the local Mercury-Meteor Dealer, who lived 3 doors up from us.
@kevinclapton7835 Жыл бұрын
never knew about these i had a 62 mercury meteor
@gojoe2838 жыл бұрын
Actually Meteors were sold at Canadian Lincoln-Mercury dealers, NOT Ford dealers. They squaked back in the late 1940s that they needed a Ford-sized car to sell, which resulted in the Meteor starting in 1949. It was basically a Ford with a Mercury style grille and trim. Meteors continued to be built until the early 1970s. The later Meteors were based on Mercurys, and by 1970 they were marketed as the "Mercury Meteor." In 1962-63, Mercury used the Meteor name in the U.S. for a mid-sized car that was the same as the Fairlane.
@JuniorFan088 жыл бұрын
The Ford based Meteor was discontinued after the 1961 model year and re-appeared in 1964 with a Mercury body on the Ford chassis, different trim, a Ford dash, wheel covers and engines. They continued to be sold by Mercury dealers. In the same vein, Ford dealers were given the Monarch to sell from 1949 to 1961 except for 1958 when dealers were given the Edsel to sell. When the Edsel failed, Ford brought the Monarch back for 1959 to the end in 1961.
@garywood95257 жыл бұрын
The rare model for Meteor was their ranchero version the Niagara . The FORD version didn't go over well so in 1958 Oakville made only 86 FORD versions while just 52 Niagara's of which only 14 had the 272 V8 . The low sales had the Niagara axed by October 22nd 57 which was smart because the 57's sold only 800 combined with a sparse inside to 2 trim level and only 4 colours and NO AC or Power windows . The good news is that the trim for the Niagara was from the Country Sedan wagon to keep the costs down but the grill and bumper were different . If you can find a Meteor Niagara for 58 ..... the front area is the biggest problem for parts but the trade off to buy it in bad shape would be the rare V8 .
@tomp16126 жыл бұрын
Actually they made Meteors until 1981. I think the 80's ones were all RCMP cars. I had a 61 Meteor..

Why can't car companies make new versions of classic cars? New cars today look like crap
@scootergeorge70899 жыл бұрын
mysteryjesus You must have missed the new Camaro, Mustang, Challenger and Beetle. Ford brought back the two seater T-Bird and it flopped.
@cymoncyrado28796 жыл бұрын
Heck it would probably cost a hundred grand to have that much material and chrome in a car today. You could set a "fat bottomed girl" on the hood of one of those and not worry about it caving in on you.
@UmmYeahOk5 жыл бұрын
Scooter George 2019, so most of those retro cars have come and gone, so the real reason why car companies can't make new versions of classic cars is because the public DOESNT WANT new versions of classic cars. Clearly, we're car people, otherwise we wouldn't be watching this show, but most people aren't car people, which is why most people prefer boring SUVs and crossovers. As I write this, Fords "new version of a classic car" would be the 2020 Mustang Mach E, which is pretty much a crossover. This vehicle will sell, while Fords ONLY real car, the regular mustang, hopes to sell just enough to not be discontinued.

@@cymoncyrado2879 I guess the chrome wouldn't be feasible with fibreglass or whatever they make modern cars with. I would like a new version of an old car with modern updates and upgrades. Make an old car with modern engines and fuel economy. I wish I could do it myself.

Was the METEOR for those years “Canada’s Mercury,” or did they also sell Mercurys in Canada?
@TripReviews4 жыл бұрын
Mercury’s were also sold in Canada. They were sold exclusive,y by Mercury-Lincoln dealers. Meteors were also sold at Mercury dealers. At least as far back as I can remember which would have been the mid 60’s.

In the mid 60's the Rideau that I saw was more of a Merc Park Lane at the front and Monterey rear light area and fender. The real unique Meteor was the sparse version of the Ranchero that didn't sell well because FORD also sold the FORD Ranchero and there were a limited number of Lincoln Mercury dealers even when your Meteor was really a FORD with lipstick. Good luck finding and restoring a Meteor Ranchero since they were scattered across 4000 miles of Country and were geared for the farm areas and not major cities.

T.W. Milburn www.oldcarscanada.com/2010/04/1957-8-meteor-ranchero.html The 57 Meteor Ranchero output was 300 , then in 1958 during tough times for all Car makers there were only 52 built in Oakville of which 14 had the V8 . The good news though is that the Meteor version of the FORD Country Sedan wagon had many Trim pieces put on the Ranchero which makes it a bit easier to restore , but the unique "V" in the grill for 57 and concave bars and Star for 58 may be tough to track down . btw There was a FORD plant in Toronto ( Christie and DuPont ) that assembled cars imported from the USA so that Henry Ford could get them into the UK as British made in one of the Colonies. Later on in the 1950's the Right-hand drive FORD's built in Canada were shipped to Australia for their market and if you search the classic car clubs and displays down under you'll see a unique Dash for the Galaxie as a right hand drive vehicle.

Ford didn't do the revived T-Bird right, it should have been a beauty, but it was too round, too stuby. They did do the Mustang right. These Meteors were far better looking than the Ford. Especially like those taillights with the bottom extension that looks like a backup light. The design started in 52, so it was getting hard to update.
@maryrafuse22975 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with the comment that the T-Bird was too round and stuby. Much better job on the 2015 Mustang.
