We have been rolling oats for hay for a few years now... this is the first year I cut it with wide swaths and crimped it, hoping we will get it up before the 2 week mark!!! I was wondering if you spray your crop and if you do when and with what? This is the first year I sprayed round up right after planting and I am sure impressed with the crop... Normally it takes so long too dry because of all the weeds. Years prior we have spray with MCPS Ester. Expensive and not the results I expected. I also was wondering how much you crimp the crop... I was messing around not sure what I was doing, found that I was loosing lots of the oats with to much crimp. We have always cut at the dough stage. I really enjoyed your video ... balancing family and farming is always tough, Miss the days the kids want to ride with me and were just happy to be in the tractor!!!

108 with humidity would be bad even for us here in East Texas. We stay humid, but with heat and wind we can usually bale grass hay after 3 days. It is 96 with 42% humidity right now, says it feels like 103 and it's 7:30PM with the sun starting to get low.

Do you set your tension lower when baling greenfeed, like when baling straw.

Will those oats come back for any decent amount to cut or graze? Or is it going to die out and then you plant something else?

yup the bales are nice, and for how bad it was in the spring and how late I planted the yield was ok.

I was reading some of the comments and the bailer could catch fire??? That’s why the moisture of the bail is important? If it’s too dry there is risk of fire? There is sooooo much more to farming then what most people can even conceive. Wow!

Balers catch fire from bearings going out on the rollers, that's why you carry a fire extinguisher and you stay on top of your greasing and inspect it often.

Do you feed your oat greenfeed exclusivley to your cows or as part of a ration with grass/alfalfa hay?

both, mostly as part of a ration, the feed value was good enough that I fed it by itself in the begining of the 3rd trimester.

A few years ago I grew a big oat crop and it yielded 8ton/acre and I had rain on it and it rained twice once after raking 2to1 and it laid for 33 days and I baled it on the tough side to get it baled. That was a hard year.

wow 8 ton an acre is crazy. We get 4 maybe 5. We did get 23 ton an acre on our corn silage this year.

8 was the highest I ever got but in my area 5-6 is pretty normal, I've grown a lot of 3ton and then you lose money. In heavier land they are growing barley silage that is yielding 10 tons of dry matter. My best corn yielded 25 wet tons, but I've harvested plenty at 15ton.

We have light soil for the most part also. If you get rain it will produce like crazy. How many acres of corn do you chop usually?

We usually have to bail 2 a.m. here cause of dew point, temp and humidity. We do get days when we here in Oklahoma can bail in the day. Last year we had a bailer go up in flames lol.

Hows that BR780? Ive heard mixed opinions on them but i would like to know the truth...

The BR780 and BR7090 are good balers , the only problem is the Extra sweep pick up wasn't built heavy enough so if it doesn't have it then it's fine and the last years they built the BR7090 they got better on the pick up and now the new balers have a very heavy pick up.

Just curious why u don't use net wrap? Lot quicker tying! Lot to pickup also! Keep a guy out of the pool hall!!! Lol....

We hate net wrap with frozen bales in the winter twine is better, my baler that can do net wrap died last year so we are twine only. We use 2500 round bales a year a net wrap is nice when it is nice out and when you are baling. Even though I hate wrap the next baler I buy will be wrap because most don't even come with twine anymore.

Have you ever thought about getting a front mounted rake or a baler mounted one. That way you could do both operations in one and not have to worry about the wind blowing your windrows so much.

I have but most of my hay is alfalfa and you have to rake when it is tough so you don't lose your leaves. I've seen some guess that do grass that rake with a front mount.

I don't even remember anymore but it yielded well and the bales weighed up good and the feed tests were good and the cows really enjoyed eating last winter.

why do not you put plastic on the round bales ?? when i mix peas and oats and make round bales off, I have to plastic them otherwise the silage will be destroyed because of the heat and the rot. then a question to ?? why wait so they get so dry ?? the cores fall out when baling the oats

Plastic is expensive and I don't need to haul water around. I bale dry feed and my bales are awesome and the cows love it. What kind of baler do you have that your bales fall apart?

AndersonCattleCo. Twine is natural and goes away, plastic does not. Seems more environmentally sound. But I know nothing about bailing.

Does 35 mean the percentage moisture of the bale is that percentage good or bad and what must the average be 😆

Yes 35 is the moisture but with the dew it is a false reading , under 20 is where you want to be.

It's not they feel the shock but it's dry they don't care and will walk throw a fence Black Angus are bad about walking throw a fence and Red Angus not so bad about walking throw one. The oats though would make more but as dry as it been they did real good.

They don't feel anything because it is so dry, I can check the fencer and it's good but if you grab the fence it barely tingles.

I was baking straw on Sunday night in west central Minnesota and that Canadian smoke was blocking out the sun and now its Friday and its still hazy here just be some fires you guys got burning up there

British Columbia is in a state of emergency because of the fires so it is really smoky here, plus they said we are getting smoke from California in jet stream. I saw a picture of the City of Calgary and you couldn't see 2 blocks because it was so smoky.

Kind of boring. You need to change our camera view. It gets tired of looking at oats going into the baler real quick. I realize that you have to watch the baler takes in. Let us see a bale coming out of the baler. Let us see somebody picking up the bales.
