This seems like a lot of effort if its ok to say so? I use a cold chisel and lump hammer and strike the arm down. I then use a pry bar to lever the arm down. Always wise to wrap a small rag around the ball joint and dust cover while working to protect the dust cover from being torn. Also some bottom arm ball joints need a chain and a 5ft pry bar. For instance from experience the Peugeot 206. Usually the force needed often pops the drive shaft from gearbox and so a container is needed to catch gear oil. I wish all lower control arm ball joints were this easy. Respect to you! ❤

@@ryantoner4270 my CV Axle is already 15 years old, it almost broke on the inner joint and stayed extended, the extension cause the ball joint to be broken. The CV Axle is original but 15 years old and the Control Arm is made by an unknown company IRONTREE. So I have to replace both the Axle and control arm.

You see the slot that c clamp went over that is for a pry bar to just push down without bending your c clamp😅
@Tagukon6 ай бұрын
@@wyelandlebeouf7202this is a very short high speed video, it made me think that only the C clamp is needed to remove the joint, but if you look closely, you also need to use the ball joint removal tool you can loan from auto stores. The C clamp is only for moving the disjointed parts.
@arontesfay252011 ай бұрын
If that ball joint came off that easy, you never really needed the c clamp. A ball joint stud that's actually seized would easily break the strongest C clamp before it even came close to popping off.

Here we have somebody who's not a mechanic making a video on how to be a mechanic 😂
@wyelandlebeouf72026 ай бұрын
Well this video is helpful as to how to compress the stud with the removal tool ill give you that. But that slot you slide the c clamp over is specifically for a pry bar to push down and even at that a ball joint seperator is 10.00 bucks cheaper than the c clamp you are using incorrectly 🤷 and applies leverage directly😅 I see lots of folks crying about a bent c clamp. Remove the c clamp from the equation use the scissor tool to push the stud down then use the pry bar to push down in the very same slot he covers. Or just use the proper ball joint separator fork that costs nothing literally 10 bucks LESS THAN THE C CLAMP, LESS than the scissor style removal tool you are already recommending to people why not spend the 10 bucks and do it right? LET ME GUESS YOU ALREADY HAD A C CLAMP BUT NO 10 DOLLAR SEPARATOR FORK😅🤡🤷 Here we have someone playing mechanic who isn't one and even worse defending his improper process 😈☠️🤷

@jeffhale22782 ай бұрын
@@ABNsabo Sometimes it's best to replace the entire control arm. Then the bushing where the arm connects to the frame is also taken care of. Some ball joints are made into the arm, then it's necessary. On 4WD vehicles with a front axle, like Jeeps and trucks, a ball joint press is often needed. Mine came from Harbor Freight, about $70, and the accessory kit for Mopar, Jeep, and Ford was another $70. Or, most auto part stores have a loaner tool you can "rent" for free.

@jeffhale22782 ай бұрын
@@ABNsabo It's a little late now, but on some cars (especially the older ones) the bolt that holds the lower arm to the frame has a cam built into it. If you're not familiar with that, it's like a big flat washer attached to the bolt head. Only the "hole" in the washer is not in the center, but off to the side. On the other end of the bolt, where the nut is, there is another washer, this one isn't attached, but loose. It too has a hole that's off-center. When you reassemble the control arm, bolt, and frame, these washers fit tightly between some tabs on the frame. As you turn the bolt head the cam action of these off-center washers move your control arm in towards the center of the car, or out. That's how the camber is adjusted. ( That's part of the front end alignment. ) BEFORE you disassemble the arm, before you even loosen the nut, it's a good idea to paint a straight line across the bolt head. Start on the frame, go across the washer, the bolt head, the washer again, and onto the frame again. This will help you put the camber back close to where it was. That should get you safely to an alignment shop. Changing the camber drastically (heck, even a little) can really make the car hard to drive, maybe dangerous. It this step is missed, you can "eyeball" it with an 18" or 24" inch carpenter's level. Set the car on the ground and hold the level vertically on the center of the tire. Get the wheel plumb or leaning in at the top just a tiny bit. Mainly get both sides the same. Test drive it at slow speed, away from traffic. If it's too squirrely feeling, or just doesn't feel safe, have it towed to an alignment shop. I know it's too late for you, but maybe someone else considering changing their control arms might find this useful.

That's because the lower ball joint is the load bearing joint. Support the lower arm on a jack stand, remove the brake caliper, pads, rotor, axle nut, break loose the outer tie rod and upper ball joint, then break loose the lower ball joint, the the spindle comes off. The lower ball joint in the video is a non-load bearing or follower, so it works. Most strut suspension cars are this way.
