Your comment at end is right on point! Swing path and club head at impact will determine ball flight. Everyone is different, spending time hitting balls will develop each individual ball position based on their swing type. Good video!

The path-position tip at the end explains a lot. Your (and other instructors) recommended club specific ball positions are too forward for me. But my path tends to the left so now I know why I get better results moving the ball back in my stance. Thanks.

This is a great video, thanks Chris. I started a channel because I felt like no one was really speaking for the "average guy" that golfs a couple weekends a year. You did a really good job of, for lack of a better term, dumbing it down to a level that I can understand shooting mid-90s, my dad would relate to shooting low 80s, and a pro would appreciate shooting scratch. Thank you. Ball placement is something I have been fretting about for a long time. You seem to be saying the ball stays in the same place but the back-foot and the center of the body move to the right. I can't say I understand everything you are trying to say but I will work on it. One question, where is the bottom of your swing arc in relation to the ball and your sternum?
@ChrisRyanGolf6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Glenn
@chubeviewer5 жыл бұрын
Just for anyone reading this comment. I'm by no means an expert but based on experience the bottom of the arc will be directly below the sternum, so moving the ball forward (your sternum more behind the ball) will make it so the ball is hit at an upward angle just past the bottom of the arc. and will also give more travel in the swing distance and therefore power not to mention greater lift. Also leaning to the right (right handed) will move the bottom of the arc to the left, since your sternum will be pointing to the left and vice versa.
@TheRuggedWay5 жыл бұрын
chubeviewer no. The only club one should hit upward on is the driver. Every other club is a downward strike

Chris..need a little clarification. If the ball is moved ahead of my sternum with a 4 iron, for example, are you saying I should not shift forward to align sternum with the ball? But rather, stay put and swing away and let the momentum moved me forward after impact?
@bsettle86 жыл бұрын
He is saying not to move sternum toward ball at setup, because you want a slightly less descending blow with longer irons and being slightly more behind the ball will achieve that.
@shrimboy74926 жыл бұрын
that's what i suspected... need to work on this... all my ball position are dead center.. suspect this to be the cause of my inconsistency with longer iron...
@chaselistorti22906 жыл бұрын
Ray Chau in a way you want less movement as possible, now when I say that I don't mean rotation, but forward to back and side to side movement and bobbing up and down, because it will change where you will be hitting, like if you shift to your back foot as you swing you will top the ball and have a worm burner... but if you put most of your weight on your heels you will hit the ball with the fat of the club. So just reposition your feet or move to the preferred placement, don't shift to hit the ball. Good luck with your game.

Jack Nicklaus says play every club off your left heel. So many schools of thought on this.

I've heard the great man Jack Nicklaus say the same. Too bad you got a love heart from Chris and no reply.
@earnestfarley5 жыл бұрын
Jack didn’t have a Foresight launch monitor and as a great ball striker, Jack could hit shots like that. Sadly, we are not Jack Nicklaus
@randoshus37625 жыл бұрын
Jack played irons with virtually no bounce. If you use modern irons to hit off the left heel you'll top it every time unless you sweep every shot like Greg Norman.
@imasspeons4 жыл бұрын
I've seen that strategy and I'm fairly certain you still achieve the same ball position relative to your sternum as you move through the bag because your stance gets wider and your weight distribution changes as the clubs get longer, thus moving the ball - again, relatively - further from center. Try it. Stand with slightly less than shoulder-width with wedge/9i and the ball will be just forward of center. Bit wider for 5i, it'll be just under your forward pec. Driver, it'll be just under your forward armpit.

How do you hit down on a ball better with my irons as I don’t take a divot and would like to increase my ball compression Cheers Joe
@adamstubbs43766 жыл бұрын
Make sure you're not sliding/swaying back during the backswing, make sure you are shifting weight towards the target during the downswing/impact, try and imagine you are aiming to hit something thats actually say a tee's length further forward than the actual ball (if that makes sense). If you can video your swing aswell, check you are not extending/lifting through impact and so moving the clubface further away from the ground.
@ItsMeHandle6 жыл бұрын
I’d like to add that I fixed this for me. You may be bringing your club back too flat. I was bringing mine back too flat and once I started the back swing straight back I was able to easily get more compression on the golf ball.

Hi bud, idk if you already figured it out, but I always put it in between where I put the 9 iron and the 3 wood, so about 4/5ths the way to your leading foot.

Wouldn't changing ball position with different clubs affect the face angle through the arc? for example if the pw is square at impact when the ball is in the middle, then the 3 iron being further along the arc would be closed.

As long as you set the face square at set up this won’t be an issue 👍

On thing left with ball position with a teed up ball with mid and long irons into par 3's. As the ball is sitting up off the grass should the sternum be behind the ball so you can catch the ball bottom of arc or slightly up ?
