When Emmylou Harris recorded Leonard Cohen's "Ballad of a Runaway Horse, he wrote her this note: Dear Emmylou Harris, Thank you for singing that song of mine. You brought it to a place I could never get to. And thank you for putting into the crowded air, and establishing it there for all to feel, the beauty, the dignity and the loneliness of America itself. In the midst of all the bewildering directions your voice takes us home. With deep gratitude, Leonard Cohen"

@@gracegallegos5307 I met her backstage twice, years apart, but she remembered me the 2nd time. The 2nd time I got to hang out with the Nash Ramblers. The first time I saw her she was performing at a music festival at a ranch in the Malibu Hills. Her band at the time had Ricky Skaggs, Rodney Crowell, and I think Albert Lee. Emmylou was wearing a purple t-shirt and jeans. Instantly became a fan. I found out about the music festival from a radio show Linda Ronstadt did with Bobby Kimmel where she said how great Emmylou was. (I won a Doc Watson album by calling in!) Bought the ticket, drove up the day of the festival, PCH was blocked by a Big Rock falling on the road and blocking traffic. Traffic backed up miles but I finally got my car turned about and took a very long detour to get to the ranch. Hot day, everyone was in a good mood and the music was the best ever. Somewhere i still have pictures. Back then they allowed SLR's into concerts, even with big lenses.

I can't stop crying. My dad was a cowboy too, my grandfather a blacksmith. Some of my dearest memories are just hanging out with my horses. Standing in a cold barn on a rainy day, brushing my horse, sharing deep secrets, feeling a connection that can never be broken. It's the spirit of freedom and love. These things we share with other cowgirls, whether in life, or by proxy. Thank you my sister cowgirl. Your video has touched a secret place in my heart!

Most songs that are deep and abiding are meant to be listened to like one would view a great piece of visual art. Art museums are quiet, contemplative spaces where one can view the paintings and sculpture with the concentration needed to appreciate and understand them. This song can only be presented to an audience that hasn't heard it, but will TAKE THE TIME TO SHUT UP AND LISTEN to its simple beauty and deep meaning. Unfortunately, most music venues would not be a good place for this incredible ballad.

Honoring the memory of my father who a day like today, April 10, 2020 twenty six years ago crossed that final door, the one that patiently waits for us all. He never heard this song nor knew Leonard Cohen or Emmy Lou Harris, but he loved horses and endured a few terrible loses. He was generous to a fault and I still miss him. Hearing the pain and yearning of this masterwork I inevitably think of him.

Say a prayer for the cowgirl - her horse ran away She'll walk till she finds him her darlin' her stray But the river's in flood and the roads are awash And the bridges break up in the panic of loss. And there's nothin' to follow nowhere to go He's gone like the summer gone like the snow And the crickets are breaking her heart with their song As the day caves in and the night is all wrong. Did she dream it was he who went galloping past And bent down the fern broke open the grass And printed the mud with the well hammered shoe That she nailed to his feet in the dreams of her youth. And although he goes grazin' a minute away She tracks him all night she tracks him all day And she's blind to his presence except to compare Her injury here with his punishment there. Then at home on a branch on the highest tree A songbird sings out so suddenly And the sun is warm and the soft winds ride On a willow tree by the riverside. Ah, the world is sweet and the world is wide He's there where the light and the darkness divide And the steam's comin' off him he's huge and he's shy And he steps on the moon when he paws at the sky. And he comes to her hand but he's not really tame He longs to be lost she longs for the same And he'll bolt and he'll plunge through the first open pass To roll and to feed in the sweet mountain grass. Or he'll make a break for the high plateau Where there's nothing above and nothing below It's time for their burden, the whip and the spur Well she ride with him - or will he ride with her? So she binds herself to her galloping steed And he binds himself to the woman in need And there is no space just left and right And there is no time, but there's day and night. And she leans on his neck and whispers low, "Whither thou goest I will go." And they turn as one and the head for the plain No need for the whip oh no need for the rein. Now the clasp of this union, who fastens it tight Who snaps it asunder the very next night Some say it's him, some say it's her Some say love's like smoke, beyond all repair. So my darlin', my darlin' just let it go by That old silhouette on the great western sky And I'll pick out a tune and they'll move right along And they're gone like smoke and they're gone like this song...

She is one of the two greatest female singers of my time. We grew up together. With her friend Linda Rondstadt who is the other voice that soothes my old soul. I can't even believe how many songs she has sung with her magical ways and her many duets with other great singers. It doesn't seem like she ever gets old. I've loved her since I first heard her with Gram Parsons. And Linda. You too have the voice of an Angel. My only wish was that you didn't leave country for a few albums because then we could have more songs the way you sing the best. I love you both and you have made my life much more beautiful. Now my son loves you both too and we also love you Emmy with John Prine who is such a talented writer and singer. Peace and love to all.

Sincere condolences on the passing of your husband after 25 years together. I feel sure that I speak for many when I say that his choice of artwork, its sequencing and assembly, is worthy of the singer and the songwriter and that the resultant visual accompaniment is exceptional. (For me, the only comparable video is Bob Marshall's to "Another Lonesome Morning"). I am aware that some will complain that it makes no reference to Zen ox-herding and the pictures on the Japanese woodcuts which inspired LC to write the song but it works perfectly well as it is. Your husband's reaction to this song, his seeing your personal relationship in the two characters has resulted in what should be a lasting tribute to his creativity. Long may this video remain available.

I have the song on CD but don't care to listen to it ravenously without the pictures!

I never used to like this kind of music, but I really like her voice! I really appreciate the storytelling in this kind of country music. Is it true that she started out as folk singer? Does anyone know the name of any of the folk songs she did?

Say a prayer for the cowgirl her horse ran away She'll walk 'til she finds him her darlin' her stray But the river's in flood and the roads are awash And the bridges break up in the panic of loss And there's nothin' to follow nowhere to go He's gone like the summer gone like the snow And the crickets are breaking her heart with their song As the day caves in and the night is all wrong Did she dream it was he who went galloping past And bent down the fern broke open the grass And printed the mud with the well-hammered shoe That she nailed to his speed in the dreams of her youth And although he goes grazin' a minute away She tracks him all night she tracks him all day And she's blind to his presence except to compare Her injury here with his punishment there Then at home on a branch on a high stream A songbird sings out so suddenly And the sun is warm and the soft winds ride On a willow tree by the riverside An the world is sweet and world is wide And he's there where the light and the darkness divide And the steam's comin' off him he's huge and he's shy And he steps on the moon when he paws at the sky And he comes to her hand but he's nor really tame He longs to be lost she longs for the same And he'll bolt and he'll plunge thru the first open pass To roll and to feed in the sweet mountain grass Or he'll make a break for the high plateau Where there's nothing above and noting below It's time for their burden the whip and the spur Will she ride with him or will he ride with her So she binds herself to her galloping steed And he binds himself to the woman in need And there is no space just left and right And there is no time but there is day and night Then she learns on his neck and whispers low Whither thou goest I will go And they turn as one the head for the plain No need for the whip oh no need for the rain Now the clasp of this union who fastens it tight Who snaps it asunder the very next night Some say it's him some say it's her Some say love's like smoke beyond all repair So my darlin' my darlin' just let go by That old silhouette on the great western sky And I'll pick out a tune and they'll move right along And they're gone like smoke and they're gone like this song Say a prayer for the cowgirl Songwriters: L. COHEN

I somehow never heard this song before and am in a state of complete if not stupified amazement. It's astonishing how much this conveys that has little or nothing to do with horses, while constantly evoking them in such immediate and moving detail. Rarely do song lyrics succeed so well as poetry, and Emmylou's rendition is characteristically sublime.

I've listened to so many of Emmylou Harris's solos, duets and all. This ballad is, for me, the pinnacle. Haunting melody, incredible emotion - utter dedication to her chosen task. - MOON BEAR SPEAKS - Montana/UK

There is something very sublime about a certain kind of song that has, melody or lyrics or harmony that really does something to the core of yourself. This is one of those songs for me. Just magical
