@@Lukkydog68 It doesn't sound like you're doing much more than plugging your camera's USB port into your computer, and if that's the case, you'll need some means of capturing the video output of your camera instead of connecting via USB. Thanks. I am a total newbie setting up a Broadcast studio (only 4 months building, then 3 weeks setting up the 2 x G21 and SMB7s!!).I had my Canon Vixia G21 HDMI going into the PC's SS slot fine. The Sure SMB7 mic went into the Mixer and a small 3.5mm jack and lead out going to the PC. No sound! Watched your clip and realised the 3.5mm should have been going from the Camera Audio Out to the Mixer - via a 3.5mm to 6.9mm converter. This let me turn off the Internal Mic on the G21 (without anything int eh Audio Out the Mic Internal Off function is greyed over) and bingo it picked up the SMB7! Even Canon helpline couldn't help...

Mr. Ballast, I'm looking into streaming for my church. To date, I have tested with a GoPro and a Samsung S8+. Neither are ideal for us, so a dedicated camera is next to try. As you can imagine, we have the choice of putting a camera & tripod in the aisle, which wouldn't we received well by worshippers, or we can put a camera in the back. The benefit of putting a camera in the back is that we can run the audio from our sound board to the camera much more easily. However, I'm concerned about two things. First, is the HF R800 zoom going to pixelate? The camera will be 40-45 feet from the person speaking. Second, our church design is quite beautiful, with huge windows looking toward a mountain range. On sunny days, this breathtaking view is absolutely the WORST to capture in video, as the speaker is powerfully backlit. We have some lights, but even when they are turned on, tests so far are not good. Auto-white balance just makes videos hideous as it flips settings to figure out what works best, and manual adjustment is that fine place between washed out subject and overexposed background. How is the HF R800 at dealing with strong backlighting conditions? Thank you in advance for any thoughts or advice. EDIT: Also, I'm having trouble with the link for the entry level tripod. Can you post the make and model here so I can manually search?
@BallastMedia6 жыл бұрын
For the tripod, try this: amzn.to/2S7O2Yp You can search "E-image GH03." Unfortunately given your environment, probably no affordable camera is going to do well. Real solution is to add a TON of light to balance the window. Probably the "best" solution is to just blow out the window and maintain exposure on your subject. Also, given the challenges of your environment, you may need to look at a better camera, like the G21 to give you a bit more dynamic range then the R800: amzn.to/2Wp8tPM, but even that probably won't be able to hold exposure that wide of a dynamic range.

Dear Ballast media, I totally hear you on the priority of starting with the cheaper Vixia line and prioritise good lighting. My concern, however, is sound quality. We are going to use the ATEM Mini Pro switcher (4 HDMI inputs). Ideally I would like to embed the audio from our sound board into the main camera (to avoid audio delay issues). Is the audio input from a Vixia 800 going to be less than fe. the XA15? If so, I do consider it worth it to invest in one better camera for the main shots & use 3 other cheaper Canons.
@BallastMedia4 жыл бұрын
Shouldn't be a problem to send your audio directly to the Mini Pro. The newest firmware versions for the Mini line have the ability to adjust (delay) the audio from the audio inputs to the video in the Mini itself.

I use an external mic. With the R800 I was getting a ton of white noise. I lowered the mic volume on the Vixia and it greatly solved the white noise issue. If I use an external mic, What volume (from 1 to 100) should I set the mic on the Vixia to? I don’t use an audio mixer. Should I just increase the mic volume on my streaming software (Vmix)?
@BallastMedia5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the vixia doesn't have the greatest preamps so it's mic input isn't great. But yes, do whatever results in the cleanest sound, if that means turning the vixia down and turning it up in vmix, whatever produces the best results. Usually I would set the input volume on the camera watching the meter while talking in to the mic (normal volume you will use) and then adjust the camera volume until it's hitting the 12 it shows on the display.

First off, thank you so much for the clear and straightforward explanation on all of your videos. I appreciate your focus on worship technologies, but it is highly useful advice for any livestreaming audience. Apologies for the following long post/question. I have a question about the setup in this video to make sure I understand. I am upgrading from a simple Logitech webcam cabled directly to a Win 10 laptop along with sound mic'ed into a mixer and then into the laptop using OBS software. I plan on using a single camera setup with the entry level camera (Canon VIXIA R800), the AJA U-TAP HDMI capture device and a Win 10 laptop (USB3 capable) with OBS Studio software. My sound will be captured by a wireless mic - Audiotecnica - and the receiver outputs to an entry level Behringer Xenyx mixer. My question is regarding the audio. Do I mic the sound and then output it from the audio mixer to the camera audio input? I am asking because my camera will be set up about fifteen feet from the laptop and mixer, which means I will need at least a 15ft audio cable running from the mixer to the camera audio input. Is that correct? btw, currently, I run the audio from the mixer to the laptop, and the video directly into the laptop and have not encountered a problem with synchronization. However, that must be a function of the level of equipment I am using. Many thanks!
@BallastMedia5 жыл бұрын
Just keep running it direct to the laptop. No reason to change, and in all honesty the R800 doesn't have good preamps so just about anything will sound better. If you do have a sync issue, just sync it up in OBS.

Honestly, If you need a camera with LANC I would recommend the Canon Vixia HF-G50. For about $1200 - $1300 you can get a 4K camera with 20x optical zoom, (the hdmi port only supports 1080p so you can’t stream in 4K, but I don’t see that being a big issue) some converters for SDI, and an SDI cable. If you spend $75 - $100 more you can get an external monitor too. It works great for me. This is only for people who are okay with converters.

We have been streaming since two months prior to March 2020 on our Facebook church page and we have found that the various phones we have tried aren't meeting our needs, i.e. drop signals, etc. We are now in the process of purchasing the Canon VIXA R800 (today's price $299) and the Blackmagic ATEM mini. I realize that the ATEM has a full HDMI connection but what should be the size of the connection to the camcorder itself? The cable that will be included with the Canon will most likely not be long enough in our setting so I'd like to order said cable ahead of time. What type of cable should I be looking for? Thanks much.

For the R800 you need a Mini-HDMI to HDMI cable. (amzn.to/3zdGGF6) Don't run HDMI cables over about 15ft. If you need to go further then that with a camera, you need to convert the HDMI out from the camera to SDI, run a long SDI cable, and convert back to HDMI at the Atem.

I really enjoy your videos and they have helped me setup our church live streaming. I purchased the R800 and have used it successfully while we had no "in person" worship. But now that we have returned to hybrid worship (limited numbers in the sanctuary), I've had to relocate the R800 to the balcony area (about 60 feet from the preacher) and the resulting video from the R800 is quite soft. (our older R300 is equally soft, well maybe a little worse than the R800) I have these connected to an ATEM mini pro and switch between a wide shot and a tighter shot. I have checked both the recorded video on the ATEM and of course the resulting facebook Iive video. Any suggestions? If this is beyond the capabilities of the R800, which camera would you recommend in this type of situation? I will still use the R800 for my wide shot of the sanctuary. I just need a sharp image when I switch to a tight shot of the preacher/ piano/ pulpit area. Thanks

Ya, you need a camera with better glass. Probably looking at something in the $1000 range. Take a look at the Canon G50 or something similar.

Thanks for the video. I'm new to this. Your diagram shows a mixer connected directly to the camcorder, but when I look at the specs for the r800, it looks like the only audio input supported is via a mini-jack for an external mic. So is using a line level input not possible with the r800?
@BallastMedia4 жыл бұрын
You need an in line attenuator like the Shure A15LA amzn.to/2X8AV9z

I enjoy your videos as they have the technical information that I am looking for. I am looking at setting up cameras for both live streaming and for recording the output from the cameras for post-production. The PTGZ cameras seem like a nice solution, but most do not seem to have on-camera recording. SDI and NDI, from my understanding, are 4:2:2 signals and that means some color loss on the other end of the signal if you record the signal there. Also, most are 1080p cameras. The cameras you suggest are also 1080p. Do you not suggest 4k, or is 4k not in this discussion because the topic is "streaming"? 4k give you some benefit in post. So, ideally it would be nice to record a 4k stream for post editing, but have a 1080p signal for streaming. Thank you for the videos.
@BallastMedia5 жыл бұрын
Ya, I don't really talk about 4k cameras because they come with a cost premium (although soon that won't be an issue) and it's not really practical for streaming in most situations. If you want to have iso recordings in 4k, probably the easiest way to do that is to just record on the camera itself like you suggested.
@BallastMedia5 жыл бұрын
I may be wrong, but I would think you'll get the same 4:2:2 or 4:4:4, etc in the recording as what the camera outputs on the SDI. A 3G-sdi signal is capable of 4:4:4. So its more a camera capability then an 'SDI' thing.

I have a Canon XL2 that I bought years ago. I’m new on this, what do I need to use this camera for broadcasting? I appreciate your help.
@BallastMedia4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that camera will only output analog SD video. (The firewire connection is pretty useless today as OBS doesn't support firewire inputs). You'll probably be best off just getting an analog SD video capture device for cheap and seeing if that works for you. amzn.to/32QWEHG

Any new camera for a church just starting and wanting one camera? We are planning of setting up the camera about 50 feet away from the main stage. Thanks!

Ballast Media today we used the Cannon 800 with the Elgato HD60 S to live stream on our church Facebook page. Our upload speed over WiFi is about 5-6 mbps. The camera was set about 35 feet away from the pulpit and with the camera zoomed we noticed the picture quality was not good when live. Just wanted to get your input on what we can do to get good picture from that distance.

In that price range there are a few similar models with slightly different features, but I don't think they've come out with a new generation yet, so in that price range that would still be the camera to get.

Check this out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJfKmH6voplmntU If you're not in a big hurry, you can wait for the ATEM Mini, it's going to be a great solution for a video interface and live streaming, but it probably won't be shipping for a while yet.

Thank you for your excellent suggestions! I was wondering if you have any suggestion on resolution and optical zoom if we're hoping to place the camera at the back of the sanctuary. We're switching from a smartphone (front of the church) to a camcorder (back of the church), but I'd hate to waste the money if this is not going to improve quality.

It sounds like you can get a clean HDMI output from that camera if you turn off auto-focus. (strange!) But as long as you can get a clean hdmi output from it, with a little work it should be fine. I'm actually in the process of making a series of videos about using mirrorless cameras (like the sony a5100) that you can find for pretty cheap on ebay to use for live streaming. It takes a little bit of work, but you can get a great image out of them.

We were streaming using a Moto Z Force Droid smartphone and using a USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter and then a 3.5 mm to mic and headphone Y and were getting excellent quality video and audio. But those adapters were very touchy with the audio, so I decided to follow your suggestions and bought the R800 camera and the U-Tap HDMI box. The first thing I noticed was the video quality was much lower quality on my Facebook livestream on the R800 than on the Moto Z Force phone. Next, the audio coming from my Facebook livestream sounds like it is in a fish bowl...horrible. Maybe I just got a bad R800, but it was a real step down in both audio and video quality, over what we were doing. About to return the R800 and search for another camcorder. Thanks for the video, it really helped in getting things setup.

This is great information. I've been tasked with finding a camera for my church and struggled. A pro consultant I know in the area recommended the Lumen VC-B30UB camera which is over 1,000.00. The church shot that down right away. Is this just a dream? Will this $250.00 camera and a 350.00 capture card do just as good of a job as that 1,000.00 camera?

Thank you for the great information. Do you think an internal PCI capture card would work as well as the AJA interface? From what I can see they are a little cheaper and possibly faster. But I don't know for sure.
@BallastMedia4 жыл бұрын
Yes, an internal card can work fine - although some AJA cards don't work with OBS. (Do some googles on the card and OBS before you purchase) Also, the Blackmagic Decklink Mini Recorder card has lots of reliability issues, I've seen SO MANY of those fail.

Do you have a recommendation for sports streaming, looking for affordable 1080p cameras with LANC/Remote support so unexperienced user can easily pan, tilt and zoom from the the same handle. The R800 seems to be missing that, any other option?

@@BallastMedia Thank you a lot. I have a following up question - I am thinking between Canon VIXIA R700 and R800. The former record also in AVCHD format. From forum discussion, it seems that for long recording say over 1 hour AVCHD format will be recorded in one file, hence the benefit of R700; for R800 only in MP4 which for long recording, the recording will be saved in chucks of file. Would it be better to take R700 with AVCHD and if so what is the trade-off versus R800. Would appreciate your comment.

I wonder if you could help me - I am trying to source a camera to live stream in church - I note your suggestion of the Canon VIXIA HF R800 but they are not easy to get hold of in the UK which is where I am - there is a Canon Legria which seems similar but it doesn't appear to have a mic input which I am going to need. Can you suggest a work around? Is the Legria for UK and Vixia for US? Or am I being completely dumb? (You don't have to answer the last one!). I am on a learning curve! Thanks for the great videos - they're really helpful.

Yes the legria is the PAL version of the vixia (ntsc). If it doesn't have audio in and you are using it to stream on a computer, you can use another USB audio interface to bring audio in to the computer.
